Second Harvest Food Bank is in critical need of food
-One in six people in America do NOT have enough food to eat. The need is even greater in the Triad. Did you know: For every ‘dollar’ donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank, Second Harvest will distribute $12 dollars worth of food (or the equivalent of 7 nutritious meals).

The greater Winston-Salem area was ranked the ‘worst metro area’ in the nation last year in regards to families with children having a hard time putting food on the table. The Winston-Salem metro area includes Davie, Forsyth, Stokes and Yadkin counties. Nearly 35% of households with children did not have enough money to buy food. More than half (53.2%) of the 51,000 (51,761) students in the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County school system were receiving free or reduced lunches. Around 100 people attended the Back-to-School prayer service yesterday at Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville. Sandy Sikes, former principal at Piney Grove Elementary, was the main speaker. She used the story of Jesus and Peter walking on water to prayerfully encourage teachers as they soon start back to school. (Journalnow.com)
Slow down. Starting next Thursday, August 25 (the day that most students start back to public school in the Triad), the penalty for speeding through a school zone will go up to $250. Add in court costs…and the total ‘fine’ will be around $400 dollars.

If you live in Mount Airy, you have likely seen people wearing T-shirts that have the words “Bring it Beck!” printed on them. The ‘Beck’ refers to Conservative TV and radio host Glenn Beck who is searching for a community in the U.S. that has been affected by the loss of textile jobs to begin manufacturing his new “1791” clothing line…with the profits going to charity. Mount Airy Mayor Deborah Cochran has been interviewed on Beck’s radio show in an effort to bring Beck’s project (and jobs) to Mount Airy. Antonio Chacon (from Albuquerque, NM) was at the right place at the right time. Chacon is credited for saving the life of a 6-year-old girl who was in the middle of being abducted. Chacon, a 24-year-old mechanic and father of two young daughters, came home from work early to spend time with his family Monday afternoon. Chacon heard a neighbor yell for the would-be kidnapper to let the 6 year old child go. That’s when he saw a man throw the child into a van. Chacon jumped into his vehicle, chasing the abductor’s van through a maze of neighborhoods. The abductor’s van crashed into a pole, the suspect fled and Chacon was able to rescue the 6 year old girl.
