Saturday is the final day for Early Voting before Election Day next Tuesday.
Long lines for early voting across the state prompted the State Board of Elections to allow the extension of Early Voting poll hours on Saturday. Residents in Guildford County can early vote until 5pm on Saturday. Forsyth County Board of Elections will make a decision at noon tomorrow whether to extend poll hours. Most counties in our listening area are sticking to the 1pm deadline on Saturday.

THE GOVERNMENT'S LATEST REPORT ON NEW HOME SALES IS A MIXED BAG. The Commerce Department says while sales of newly built homes increased in September, the prices at which they sold dipped to a four-year low.

An FBI sting operation has rescued dozens of child prostitutes. “Operation Cross Country Two" was carried out in 29 cities across the country. resulting in 642 arrests and the rescue of 47 children. Ten of the rescued children had been listed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Chicago police have found the SUV wanted in the disappearance of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson's nephew. The Cook County medical examiner's office says that police have found the body of a male child but police have not confirmed if it is seven-year-old Julian King who disappeared the same day Hudson's mother and brother were found shot to death in their Englewood home.

FILINGS FOR HOME FORECLOSURES IN THE US ROSE 70% FROM THE THIRD QUARTER OF LAST YEAR TO THE THIRD QUARTER OF THIS YEAR. Since August 2007, nearly 850,000 homes have been re-possessed by lenders.

Wachovia Bank Corporation posting its largest quarterly loss yesterday. Actually, the $24 billion dollar loss is the largest quarterly loss ever for a US retail bank. The third quarter posting is likely Wachovia’s final financial report before the possible acquisition by Wells Fargo.

Mission Aviation Fellowship is hoping for the best. Helicopters and boats are still searching for a MAF pilot and plane off the coast of Australia. The pilot did not file any type of mayday signal.

The Coast Guard is investigating the circumstances regarding missing crew members from a fishing boat in Alaskan waters. 13 crewmembers were on the vessel…six have been found alive…two remain missing.

More than 16,000 people made decisions for Christ as a result of a three city Harvest Crusade with Greg Laurie. The first of the crusades came just about three weeks after Laurie's 33-year old son, Christopher, was killed in a car accident last August.

VOTERS IN SAN FRANCISCO WILL SOON DECIDE WHETHER THEIR CITY SHOULD STOP ENFORCING LAWS AGAINST PROSTITUTION.
The question, known as Proposition-K, will appear on the November ballot. Because state law prohibits prostitution, the city of San Francisco cannot actually legalize the practice.

According to a Swedish study…having two servings of yogurt a day greatly reduces the risk of bladder cancer. The study followed 80,000 people for nine years. While daily consumption of yogurt reduces bladder cancer risk by 45%
in women and 36% in men…other dairy products didn't provide the same benefit.

For the second year in a row, the White House Christmas tree will come from Ashe County. The White House Chief Usher and his staff made the trip from Washington DC to Ashe County yesterday to hand-select the Frasier Fir from the River Ridge Tree Farm in Creston. Police in Blue Ash, Ohio have arrested 89-year-old Edna Jester and charging her with petty theft. Neighborhood children have accused her of refusing to give back their football. Jester is accused kept the youngsters' ball after it landed in her yard. There has been an ongoing dispute in the neighborhood over kids' balls landing in the woman's yard. Jester is to appear in court next month. Wall Street gains from Monday went south by the end of the day on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 733 points…the second biggest point drop ever for the Dow. On Monday, the index enjoyed its largest ever point gain. The S-and-P 500 and the NASDAQ also suffered major losses yesterday.

An explosive rally sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average rocketing up more than 900 points on Monday. Confidence on Wall Street coming from recent talks between the US and other nations to jointly back the global banking system. North Carolina's public employee pension funds have dropped in value by at least $6 billion dollars over the last three months. But… State Treasurer Richard Moore stating that the retirement system that supports more than 800,000 current and former state workers is sound. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina has a new Executive Director. Clyde Fitzgerald, Jr is a former senior executive with R.J.R. and has been closely associated with Second Harvest since its founding in 1982. Fitzgerald replaces Nan Griswold, who recently stepped down after 26 years as the Director of SHFB.

A FORMER DEFENSE DEPARTMENT CONTRACTOR HAS PLEADED GUILTY TO STEALING MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF FUEL FROM THE U.S. ARMY IN IRAQ. The Justice Department saying that the 32-year old man faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and a 250-thousand dollar fine. The stolen fuel was worth about 40-million dollars.

A LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED TO CHALLENGE THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER. The suit filed by the Freedom From Religion Foundation challenges the federal law that designates the annual observation…claiming that the law violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. It names President Bush, his press secretary, the Governor of Wisconsin, and Shirley Dobson, the chair of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. In 1952 Congress passed a resolution calling for an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, Congress permanently set the first Thursday of every May as the National Day of Prayer.

Breaking News: Wells Fargo will acquire Charlotte-based Wachovia in an all-stock transaction worth about $15 billion dollars. Wachovia has ended talks with Citigroup. New story: Officials with UNC Charlotte saying that a student has been diagnosed with tuberculosis. The school is contacting people who might have been exposed. The Charlotte Observer reported that school officials said the un-named student lives in private, off-campus housing. Starting today (October 1st), if you are under 21 years of age…your state issued driver’s license or ID card will now be printed vertically. The change is to help retailers from selling alcohol and tobacco to under aged people.

After 26 years, Nan Griswold is stepping down as the Executive Director of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. The past year has been a ‘trying time’ for Nan and her family. Late in 2007, Nan’s husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. In June, their house was heavily damaged by fire. And in July, Nan broke her ankle.
