National Weather Service forecasters said they expect 13 to 17 tropical storms,
with seven to 10 of them becoming hurricanes this year.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs June 1 through November 30.
The superintendent of Davie County Schools, Steve Lane, resigned yesterday, just two weeks after a school bond proposal that he supported…failed. Lane said he wasn’t forced to resign…but he thinks that a new superintendent could bring a fresh approach to tackling the problem of overcrowding at Davie High School.
An estimated 10,000 people attended the funeral service of Rev Jerry Falwell yesterday. One student didn’t make to the service…
A 19 year old Liberty University student was arrested yesterday for having 6 homemade bombs in his car. ABC News saying that the student was going to use the bombs to stop protesters from disrupting the funeral service of the Rev. Jerry Falwell. A relative of the arrested student alerted authorities to the potential bomb threat. (ABC News / USA Radio News)
The 2 ‘wayward whales’ stuck miles inside the Sacramento River apparently are swimming in circles. Crews in the more than two dozen boats blocking the humpbacks' path up the river tried herding the mother and her calf downstream by banging metal pipes beneath the water.
The challenge, officials said, was encouraging the pair to return to salt water quickly but without resorting to tactics that could upset the whales.

New Hampshire: Four town employees here say they were, raising questions about fairness, free speech and a staple of life in the American workplace.
The employees were fired in April after speaking to a lawyer the town hired as a fact-finder to rout out chatterboxes. The women now known as "The Hooksett Four" comprise about a quarter of the town's staff, including two entire departments. They are well-known in Hooksett, home to about 13,000 people.Each woman had received positive work reviews and is appealing to get back her job. (CNN)

Thousands are expected to attend the funeral for the late Reverend Jerry Falwell today. The service will be held at 1pm at Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. Franklin Graham will speak. Rev Falwell passed away last Tuesday. He was 73.
Preliminary research is showing that A-van-dee-a, a pill widely prescribed by doctors to treat type 2 diabetes, actually increases the users' risk for heart attack by 43%. The FDA has issued a safety alert on Monday for the drug, but stopped short of a stronger warning label, saying more analysis was needed. http://www.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=604806
Dr. Lisa Cooke, the principal of Eastern Guilford High School, the school which was destroyed by fire in November, is resigning. Dr Cooke has been on a medical leave of absence since February. Dr. Travis Reeves, the principal of East Montgomery High School, will replace Dr Cooke.
MySpace.com has decided to provide data on registered sex offenders who use the popular social networking Web site. Attorney generals from eight states (including NC) demanded last week that the company provide data on how many registered sex offenders are using the site and where they live.
MySpace initially refused to divulge the information, citing federal privacy laws.
Democrats in Congress are drafting a funding bill that doesn't include a timeline for the pullout of U.S. troops in Iraq…and it wouldn't contain billions of dollars in spending on domestic programs. The measure would provide funds for military operations in Iraq through September.
Mt Airy Police decided yesterday not to charge seven seniors at Mount Airy High School in a prank that involved sneaking into the school last week to move chairs, throw toilet paper and write “seniors 2007” in peanut butter.
School officials would not say how the seniors will be punished.
Five of the students climbed into the school through an open window, officials said. They were caught after an alarm went off and police responded.
Two other students remained outside but were a part of the prank.

The first ever Tar Heel Barbecue Classic will be held on Oct. 6-7 in Raleigh.
Western and Eastern styles of barbecue will be featured.
Stephanie Saintsing, the organizer for the Lexington Barbecue Festival, said she loves the idea, but the debate over which style of barbecue is best ¬- Eastern or Western - will never end. “Obviously, Lexington favors Western-style BBQ.
The Lexington Barbecue Festival is scheduled for Oct. 27.

A swarm of about 3,000 honeybees emerged from the woods around the West Noble High School football field, where 700 people were participating in a 24 hour fundraising walk for the American Cancer Society.
A local beekeeper, Matt Green, used a smoke machine to calm the bees and coax them into a beehive he brought to the field. The event was delayed about 45 minutes.

Traffic around Wake Forest University will be a little crazy this morning. Graduation Exercises will take place this morning at 9am on the Quad at Wake Forest University. Approximately 1,500 under-graduate and graduate students will receive diplomas. Parking on campus will be limited. The university's shuttle service will provide continuous transportation to and from parking lots at Groves Stadium through 6 p.m.
Gas prices have hit an all-time high: According to the latest Lundberg Survey,
the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.18, the highest average cost per gallon ever – even adjusting for inflation. This weekend alone, from Friday to Sunday, the average price of gas went up another 5 cents per gallon.
Nationwide: the lowest price for regular fuel was $2.87 in Charleston, South Carolina…the highest was in Chicago at $3.59 a gallon.
The SAT and ACT - rites of passage for millions of high-school students - are becoming optional at a small but growing number of colleges. Most of the schools (including George Mason University) offering to make the tests optional are small, liberal-arts colleges. Of the top 100 liberal-arts colleges named in the latest U.S. News and World Report standings, 29 do not require the test. Thirteen of those made the change since 2004.
New Orleans officials say the city is better prepared than it was before Katrina. Katrina, a Category 3 storm, hit New Orleans in August 2005… overwhelming the levees and flooding the city. The storm killed at least 1,300 people with an estimated $81 billion dollars in damage…making Katrina the worst natural disaster in US history. The 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1 and continues through November.
A wayward mother whale and her calf still have miles to go and obstacles to overcome as marine biologists try to coax them back to the Pacific Ocean. Last week, Scientists tried to use recordings of whales feeding to lure the two back toward home. The whales were left alone during the weekend. Miranda Bailey, a 17 year old Junior at North Davidson (and a cadet major with the Air Force Junior ROTC) won a statewide writing essay titled "Why It Is Important to Vote" sponsored by the North Carolina American Veterans Essay Competition. Miranda’s essay has now been entered into a nationwide contest. Miranda will not be old enough to vote until October. But understands that power behind the ballot box…"If you vote, you can change things," she said. "You can make things better." Bailey has been a part of JROTC for three years. She would like to be a B-2 bomber pilot for the Air Force. Bailey will be recognized at the state AMVETS convention in Greensboro June 2, where she will receive her prize money. She will put the money in a savings account to go toward a car.

Emilio Gonzales, a 19-month-old boy whose terminal illness started a legal and ethical debate passed away Saturday night at Children's Hospital of Austin, Texas. Emilio had been on a respirator since December and was believed to have Leigh's disease, a progressive illness which destroys brain functions.
Emilio’s mother had fought in court to continue his medical care… while doctors had sought to remove him from life support . In April, a judge agreed to temporarily block the hospital's request to end life support.
This summer, Hospice & Palliative CareCenter in Winston-Salem is offering teen-agers, ages 13 to 18, weekly volunteer opportunities through its new Youth Impact Program. The teen volunteer sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 9am until noon from June 12 through August 21, at Hospice & Palliative CareCenter.
Volunteer opportunities will include planting and maintaining flower gardens, baking cookies for patients and families, making greeting cards for patients, leading BINGO activities in nursing homes. Call Angela Henrichs at (336) 768-3972, ext. 339.

Two Iraqi journalists working for ABC News were ambushed and killed
as they drove home from work. The attack took place Thursday afternoon when unknown assailants attacked the car carrying a cameraman and a soundman.
According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists has recorded 102 journalists and 39 media support workers killed…and 48 journalists abducted since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The plan supported by the President will pump more money into border security and create a temporary worker program to bring new arrivals into the U.S.
The Bush administration is wasting no time finding a successor
to World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz. Wolfowitz has agreed to resign after officials found him guilty of breaking bank rules over his handling of a pay and promotion package for his girlfriend.

It took more than 30 minutes to literally move the stalled electric train 12 feet so that it touched live overhead wires and was able to resume its journey. Two Iraqi journalists working for ABC News were ambushed and killed
as they drove home from work. The attack took place Thursday afternoon when unknown assailants attacked the car carrying a cameraman and a soundman.
According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists has recorded 102 journalists and 39 media support workers killed…and 48 journalists abducted since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Wildfires in Georgia have blackened more than 600 square miles of dried-out forest and swampland. Experts say that the Georgia swamp fires could burn for months.
The dates for the Furniture Market will shift back to April and October beginning in 2008. Future markets will remain on a Monday through Sunday schedule. The 2007 Fall Market is set for October 1-7.
Even with record gas prices holding above $3 per gallon nationwide, more Americans will be traveling by car over the Memorial Day holiday weekend than a year ago. According to a survey by Triple A, you will be traveling but you will stay closer to home and take shorter trips.
Paris Hilton will serve about half of her 45-day jail sentence. The 26-year-old hotel heiress will spend about 23 days in a "special needs housing unit" near Los Angeles. Hilton was sentenced to jail this month for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. A judge ordered her to report to jail by June 5.

The women-only rooms will have feminine touches like special hair dryers, bath products, jewelry holders and chenille throws. Rooms on the Ladies Only floor will cost $30 dollars more.
The hotel opens in September.

The Clemmons Town council narrowly approving a policy that bans sectarian prayer to open its meetings. The Village Attorney Warren Kasper saying that such prayers are illegal.

The cruise ship “Empress of the North” has ran aground off the coast of Alaska. More than 200 people are being evacuated into life boats.
The Coast Guard was dispatched after receiving an emergency radio message at 12:35 a.m. this morning from the ship, operated by Majestic America Line of Seattle. (CNN)

The cost of a first class stamp up to 41 cents.
Also, under the new postal rate increase…you will need to measure size, thickness and weight of your letter or card. Good News: the ‘forever stamp’…a generic stamp that will always be valid for mailing a letter no matter how much rates increase. (USA Radio news)

Governor Easley has declared Friday (April 20) as a day of mourning in memory of the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings earlier this week. The governor is also calling for a moment of silence at noon today.
Virginia Tech Alumni have declared today Hokie Hope: Orange and Maroon Effect day.

Evangelist Franklin Graham said Cho Seung-Hui, the killer at Virginia Tech University, was "filled with evil,” and that Satan is responsible for Monday’s mass killings of 32 people at the Blacksburg, Va., campus.
Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, sent 20 chaplains from his ministry’s Rapid Response Team to the Virginia Tech campus to help students, faculty and staff deal with their emotions in the wake of the massacre.
Columbine High School in Colorado is closed today
marking the eighth anniversary of the Columbine school shooting.
During the 1999 Columbine attack, two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, fatally wounded 12 classmates and a teacher before killing themselves. (CNN)
The Governor is requesting Federal Disaster Aid to help with the recent freeze damage to crops over Easter weekend. Estimated crop losses stand at over $111 million dollars across the state. Federal aid would allow farmers to get federal emergency loans. (NCNN)

Mount Tabor High School. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

-Classes have been cancelled for the rest of the week at Virginia Tech.
-Norris Hall the site of one of the shootings will be closed for the remainder of the semester.
President Bush speaking at a Convocation service yesterday afternoon at Virginia Tech. A candle light vigil was attended by thousands last night.
Police are pouring over the writings of (cho – sung – we) Cho Seung-Hui,
the 23-year-old resident legal alien from South Korea who fatally wounded 32 people before turning the gun on himself. 14 others that were wounded in the rampage are still hospitalized.
-Police are search for further clues…continuing to ask the question…WHY?
Seung-Hui exhibited warning signs long before his deadly shooting spree on the Virginia Tech campus, fellow students and professors are saying.

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine was not wearing a seat belt when he was severely injured in an automobile accident last week.
Police saying that Corzine's SUV was going 91 mph in a 65 mph zone just before the crash.
Corzine, age 60, broke multiple bones in the wreck and remains hospitalized in intensive care, breathing with the help of a respirator.

Over 40 non-profit agencies and scores of volunteers will be on hand at the coliseum Annex in Winston-Salem today.
‘Project Homeless Connect’ a one-day outreach program for the homeless, will be at the Coliseum Annex from 8 to 3:30 p.m.
-Great event with information about employment, housing, job training, education, substance abuse, emergency assistance, veterans benefits and legal assistance.
-Project Homeless Connect will offer the homeless showers, haircuts and food. -Transportation will be available to the event from sites around the city.

Tragedy at Virginia Tech (information Link)
Two shooting incidents on campus Monday left 33 dead. Thirty-one, including the gunman, died at Norris Hall; two died at West Ambler Johnston Hall. Fifteen other victims from Norris are being treated at area hospitals.

Virginia Tech President Charles Steger saying that the gunman who opened fire in Virginia Tech's Norris Hall, fatally wounding 30 people before turning the gun on himself, was "an Asian male who was a resident in one of the dorms.
-Steger didn't provide further details…however, he didn't think a second gunman was on the loose.
-Officials are still uncertain whether the student gunman at Norris Hall was the same one who fatally shot two people in a dorm two hours earlier.

No more ‘board of education’? A House committee in Raleigh has approved a bill that would ban corporal punishment in public schools across the state.
The measure heads to another committee before it reaches the full House.
Sponsors said other, more effective ways exist to discipline children in class.

The Surry County School Board has voted to adopt a ‘smoke-free’ policy for the Surry County School system beginning in July. WS / FC school board will address the smoking issue in May. 72% of public school systems in North Carolina have a 100% tobacco free policy. (WS Journal)

Better late than never: The North Carolina Senate has apologized for the Legislature's role in promoting slavery and Jim Crow laws that denied basic human rights to the state's black citizens. One central Ohio school district will not be calling on this substitute teacher again, after school officials said she used clothespins to silence four chatty kindergartners. The ‘Sub’ Ruth Ann Stoneburner reprimanded the 4 youngsters by putting spring-type clothespins on their lips for talking too much in class.
Stoneburner has been permanently suspended.

Safe at home: A warm homecoming for the 15 British military sailors held hostage in Iran for nearly two weeks. Their plane arrived in London earlier this morning. Firefighters say that a brush fire that started yesterday afternoon near Traphill Road at Stone Mountain State Park is over 80% contained. The fire burnt close to 130 acres.
Low humidity and breezy conditions will increase the risk of wild fires across the state. The National Weather Service suggesting that NO ‘burning’ should be attempted today.
A mock ‘Terror Drill’ at one New Jersey school district portrays Christians as Terror threat:
Schools officials in Burlington, New Jersey along with local law enforcement staged a mock ‘hostage situation’ drill last week portrayed the attackers as ‘conservative Christians.’ In the drill, one of the mock attackers was upset that his daughter was expelled for praying before class. School superintendent Chris Manno praised the exercise…saying that “you perform as you practice. We need to ‘practice’ under conditions as real as possible.”

Safe at home: A warm homecoming for the 15 British military sailors held hostage in Iran for nearly two weeks. Their plane arrived in London earlier this morning. Before their release, the UK sailors and marines shook hands and made small talk with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in front of TV cameras. They thanked him for pardoning them. A man was cut on the face with a knife during an argument Monday inside the Central Library on West Fifth Street in Winston-Salem.
Police say that two men who knew each other exchanged words, then a knife was pulled. Library staff members said that police told them the incident may have been gang-related.

A UNCG Freshman who was shot on March 24 is now facing charges of his own: UNC-Greensboro police charging 19 year old Stephen Cobb with felony possession of marijuana, among other charges. Eleven Davidson County students and two adults were injured in a school bus crash yesterday afternoon on Trinity Street in Thomasville. Authorities say that the school bus driver ran a red light. A biker that was struck by a van yesterday morning on Union Cross Road in Wallburg died at Baptist Medical Center. The victim's name has not been released. The investigation is continuing.

The Council of State voted yesterday to take over the financially troubled Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem.
Officially, the property transfer is considered a gift from the Hanes Memorial Fund to the state. And the Council approved the purchase of Chimney Rock Park for $24 million.

The Midway Town Council is expected to approve a resolution allowing residents to vote on beer and wine sales within the newly incorporated town of Midway.

The ACLU and the Winston-Salem Chapter of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State have filed a lawsuit on behalf of 3 Forsyth County residents. The Winston-Salem Journal reporting that the lawsuit is asking the court to prohibit prayers to a specific deity during the opening invocation of the Forsyth County Commissioners meetings. The group is claiming that public prayers to a specific deity is unconstitutional. Commissioners in Forsyth will meet Thursday to decide what to do in response to the lawsuit.
Legal experts say that pet owners are not likely to get much compensation if they individually sue pet food-maker Menu Foods over the death of a dog or cat, although they might fare better if they joined forces in a class action suit.
Most state laws consider animals…to be only personal property.
Over the weekend… Nestle Purina is recalling all sizes and varieties of its Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes.
Del Monte Pet Products is recalling some of its dog and cat treats with certain date codes.
The FDA suggesting that most of the recalled pet foods contained melamine, a chemical used to make plastics.

A suspect has been charged with murder, less than 24 hours after two Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were fatally shot.
