After years of testing, fast-food giant McDonald's has finally selected a new trans-fat-free oil for its famous fries. McDonald's said the new oil is canola-based and includes a mix of corn and soy oils. The new oil has gotten good reviews in extensive testing and is now being used in more than 1,200 U.S. restaurants.
McDonald's and other restaurants face a July 1 deadline to start complying with a New York City ordinance that bans the use of artificial trans fats.

A sixth football player has been charged with assault and battery in connection with an alleged campus assault at Guilford College. Five players have already been charged with assault and ethnic intimidation in connection with the on-campus fight involving three Palestinian students,

During an interview with National Public Radio, President Bush saying that the US will respond firmly if Iran keeps fueling the violence inside Iraq, but said he had no intention of invading Iran. Two U.S. aircraft carriers have been stationed in the Gulf as a warning to the Islamic republic. The White House has accused Tehran of undermining efforts to stabilize Iraq and of pursuing nuclear weapons. www.npr.org

The Army has opened a $50 million dollar high-tech rehabilitation center in Texas that is designed to serve the growing number of soldiers who return from war with severe injuries. The new high tech center will specialize in treating wounded soldiers with lost limbs or with severe burns. www.cnn.com

The new owners of Carowinds have told the Charlotte Observer that ticket prices will be dropping for 2007. A regular one-day ticket will cost $44.95, down $5 dollars from last year. For kids 3 and under AND seniors…ticket prices will drop $13 dollars to $19.95. for the first time since opening in 1973. Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized yesterday ending an eight-month drama after the colt shattered his right hind leg in the Preakness.
After surgery on Saturday to support the injured leg, and with all four of Barbaro's feet ailing, owners and vets decided that he was in too much pain.
