Blood supplies are still at emergency levels.
Hurricane Ernesto forced the American Red Cross to cancel many of the blood drives that had been scheduled along the North Carolina coast over the weekend. Type O-negative, the universal blood type, is in great demand.
You can give blood every 56 days…if you are in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to schedule an appointment.
The latest named storm… Tropical Storm Florence is slowly gaining strength out in the Atlantic. Florence could become a Hurricane over the next couple of days. It’s still too early to tell if Florence will affect the US.
Many along the East Coast are still trying to recover from Tropical Storm Ernesto. -At least nine fatalities have been attributed to Ernesto.
-In Huntington, N.Y., a tree that is believed to be about 550 years old was weakened by the storm and fell Sunday. It was believed to be the oldest black oak in North America and once stood 90 feet high.
-Along our coast…
Numerous roads are still flooded east of I-95 including roads in Duplin, Jones and Sampson counties.
-About 140 people were evacuated in Duplin and Pender counties earlier in the week.
-The Cape Fear River should be back to its normal level by the end of the week.
NASA will postpone the launch of space shuttle Atlantis by another day after discovering problems with a fuel cell early this morning. Good news… A new study from the University of California, Los Angeles shows that eating a salad a day will definitely help. The study is being published in the September issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. (www.saladaday.org)
