Ruth Graham, the wife of evangelist Billy Graham, was laid to rest in the Prayer Garden on the grounds of the recently-dedicated Billy Graham Library in Charlotte yesterday. The private service was attended by family and close friends. Ruth Bell Graham was 87. (http://www.bgea.org/)
A quick story about Ms Graham’s coffin:
On a visit to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, Louisiana in 2005, Franklin Graham noticed some coffins being produced by the inmates. Upon inquiry, he learned this was a project inmates began several years ago. The warden at the prison had the inmates construct simple plywood coffins for themselves and others who could not afford to purchase them. In addition to making the caskets, the prisoners – many of them former hardened criminals who are now committed Christians – also pray over them. Franklin was struck by the simple and natural beauty of these caskets and requested that the prisoners design and build two of them for his parents. The coffins are made of plywood…The Grahams requested no special upgrades to the caskets, which cost around $200 to make. Governor Easley is requesting that residents in 4 western North Carolina counties (including Ashe, Watauga and Caldwell counties) to step up water conservation after being added to the severe drought list. Currently, 21 western counties in our state are in either an extreme or severe drought situation.
Easley recommends the following simple steps that all North Carolinians can use to conserve during this drought:
-Take shorter showers.
-Water lawns and gardens early in the morning or late in the evening, not in the heat of midday, to prevent evaporation.
-Do not leave water running while rinsing dishes, shaving or brushing teeth.

Nearly 140 old bombs have been excavated from a Virginia golf course built over a former bombing range. The job was done quietly last summer at Langley Air Force Base near Hampton, Virginia…and was just disclosed last week. The Air Force says golfers were never in danger because no bombs were near the surface.
The property (now a golf course) was used for bombing practice from 1917 to 1937. It became a landfill before it was converted into two 18-hole golf courses. The bombs were uncovered when a contractor was hired to fix a drainage problem after Hurricane Isabel in 2003. The course might reopen this summer. A neighboring course might also have bombs under it, but the Air Force figures they're buried too deep to be dangerous. That course remains open. (CNN)

State senator Kay Hagan (from Greensboro) has filed a bill that would allow people to buy raw, unpasteurized milk from local dairy farmers. The Senate approved the bill by a vote of 39-9 last week. -Under state law, farmers and other people who own cows are free to drink raw milk.
-But since 2004, the state legislature outlawed a practice known as
“cow-sharing,” it has been illegal in North Carolina to sell raw milk for human
consumption. Hagan’s bill now goes to the N.C. House of Representatives.
If it is approved there, consumers would be allowed to enter into contracts with farmers to buy a “share” of their cows and get raw milk from them. It would still be illegal to sell it commercially.
