The National Hurricane Center in Miami is tracking 3 tropical storms in the Atlantic: Tropical Storm Hanna along with Ike and Josephine.
Hanna is expected to reorganize and strengthen over the next two days. The National Weather Service has issued a Rip Current Warning for the coastal areas of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The American Red Cross has set up its statewide nerve center in a 45,000-sqare-foot warehouse in Greensboro. At least one Greensboro animal shelter is planning for pets evacuated during the storm. Greensboro Pet Spa & Resort on Martin Luther King Drive can house about 80 dogs and 15 cats, and is asking for only a donation, if possible.

VP pick Sarah Palin will speak tonight at the Republican National Convention. Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman (now an Independent) gave a positive endorsement of John McCain and running mate VP Sarah Palin last night .

Greensboro-based food distributor, Southern Foods, has been sold to a group of specialty food investors. The company said it will keep all of its employees and continue to operate from its Old Battleground Road facility. Southern Foods was founded in 1954 by the Nussbaum family.

The funeral for Petty Officer Joshua Harris will be held at noon on Saturday at First Baptist Church on West Third Avenue in Lexington. Harris, 36 years old of Lexington, is the Navy SEAL who drowned after he was swept away during a nighttime river crossing in Afghanistan.
Josh was the son of Dr. Sam Harris and Evelyn Harris of Lexington. Evelyn Harris is one of the founders of the Lexington Youth Theater.

-Singer songwriter Jerry Reed has died due to complications from emphysema. He was 71.
-Voiceover talent Don LaFontaine died earlier in the week. THE voice of movie trailers for close to 30 years (who coined the phrase ‘In a world where…’) was 68 years old. As the bigger cities of Greensboro and Kernersville expand, there's growing concern that the small community of Colfax will one day be wiped off the map.Officials from Greensboro (to the east) and Kernersville (to the west) have agreed to a boundary line beyond which they won't annex any land. The line, which runs down Bunker Hill Rd., which lies right in the heart of Colfax.
Colfax has a rich history. It was named for U.S. Vice President Schuyler Colfax. But after several attempts, Colfax residents could not become incorporated.
