Winston-Salem has been chosen as the location for a new Caterpillar Plant. Caterpillar will be required to create and maintain at least 400 full time positions within the first five years. The proposed location of the Caterpillar plant is near the existing Dell Plant off Temple School Road and Union Cross Road. The Governor will attend a press conference at Forsyth Tech this afternoon regarding the Caterpillar announcement . Winston-Salem beat out Montgomery, Alabama and Spartanburg, South Carolina were also in the running for the Caterpillar plant.

Personal details of 100 million Facebook users have been collected and published on the net by a security consultant. (Union County, NC) Church Deacon nabs teen vandals while sitting out in the cemetery. Church members in Union County help deputies solve several break-ins at two churches. Pastor Dr. David Richardson at Faulks Baptist Church said over the last few weeks, someone broke into the church and shot out lights and stained-glass windows with a BB gun. Deputies said someone had been causing the same problems about four miles away at Good News Baptist Church. Deputies were called to Faulk's Baptist Church at around 12:45 a.m. early Wednesday morning by a deacon who had been staking out the church for the last week. The deacon sat in a chair overnight in the church's cemetery and said he spotted two teenage boys with BB guns. The deacon stopped the teens and called deputies. A Greensboro councilman is proposing a major road name-change. Councilman Zack Matheny thinks the city should consider renaming High Point Road to Gateway Boulevard. He said the road could use a clean slate after recent crime problems and with the city building a new Aquatic Center near the coliseum. At this point, the name change is just a ‘proposal’ and would also require approval from the city of High Point.

Investigators with the National Weather Service said a tornado touched down in the Low Gap community of Surry county Monday evening, just missing Raven Knob Boy Scout camp. Investigators ranked the tornado as an EF-0, meaning the storm was packing winds estimated at 80 mph. About 400 Boy Scouts staying at the camp -- some of whom were in tents -- had to move to some nearby shelters. No injuries associated with the storm were reported.

A bank in Clemmons is investigating how a counterfeit $100 dollar bill wound up as part of a customer's withdrawal. WXII reporting that Dee Grimes often cashes her paycheck at Southern Community Bank in Clemmons. On Monday, she cashed her check and drove to BB&T in Hillside to deposit the money into another account. According to Grimes, officials at BB&T told her one of the $100 dollar bills was counterfeit. Grimes said BB&T notified Southern Community and the bank immediately started investigating. The bank's investigation found Grimes' claim to be true and she will be given a ‘new’ $100 dollar credit. NASCAR team owner Jack Roush and a passenger were injured late yesterday in a private jet accident at an airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The NTSB is investigating the accident.

Weather is posing latest challenge to the Gulf clean up and containment. Forecasters say that a weather disturbance in the Caribbean could grow into a tropical storm over the next 24 hours. The storm is expected to move across southern Florida into the eastern Gulf this weekend, bringing heavy thunderstorms and high seas to the area affected by the BP oil spill. Shirley Sherrod, the Federal Ag Department worker who was forced to resign from her government job in Georgia based on incomplete and misleading reports of a speech she gave, has been offered a new job by the White House. But, she said Wednesday night, she will have to "think about it." Sherrod, an African-American, is the former Agriculture Department official who resigned under pressure after a video clip surfaced of her discussing a white farmer. A three-year research project at Wake Forest University will delve into question of character in order to find out what makes one person compassionate, another cruel and another courageous. The research, called "The Character Project," is being funded through a $4 million dollar grant from the John Templeton Foundation to the university. The measure directs police starting in February to take DNA samples of suspects charged with a Felony (murder, rape and other serious crimes). The DNA sample will be entered into the state DNA database to determine whether the person may be linked to other crimes. The DNA record will be deleted if the person is acquitted or charges are dismissed.

THE U.S. SENATE HAS GIVEN FINAL APPROVAL TO A MAJOR OVERHAUL OF THE RULES GOVERNING THE NATION'S FINANCIAL SYSTEM. It's the biggest reform of the financial system regulations since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The U.S. House had already passed the measure and President Obama is expected to sign it within the next few days. The legislation gives the federal government authority to break up struggling large companies whose failures might threaten the national economy.
A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the Gaithersburg, Maryland this morning. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the center of the quake was about 20 miles north-west of Washington, DC.

According to surveys conducted by an independent firm, the United Methodist Church is seeking to reverse its declining membership. Findings from the newly released report, "The Vital Congregations Research Project," revealed that the main ‘drivers of vitality’ were consistent regardless of church size, predominant ethnicity and geographic location.

Tuition costs are going up at all 16 public university campuses in the state. Under a plan approved by the UNC Board of Governors, students on average will pay nearly $500 dollars more in tuition this Fall. City residents in Winston-Salem have been given the ‘green light’ to trap coyotes on their property starting this Fall. The issue of coyotes within the city limits of Winston-Salem came to light last year when officials at the Children's Home on Reynolda Road reported coyotes killing calves and other animals on the home's farm. Forsyth County is offering Caterpillar a $10 million dollar incentive to come to our area. The city of WS is also offering millions in incentives.

Just after 2am…A Lexington police officer was involved in a shooting near Virginia Drive and Spring Drive in Lexington. The suspect was taken to Baptist Medical Center and treated for "non-life threatening" injuries. Police did not say if the suspect involved in the shooting is related to the robbery at the Sonic. A 30-year-old Lexington man was accidentally killed early yesterday morning at High Rock Lake after falling from a pontoon boat. Witnesses told police that 30 year old Brandon Brogdon fell into the water beside a pier near the boat. His friends found him and tried to revive him.

The vehicle was hauling unsold fireworks to a warehouse in Winston-Salem when it caught fire around 7:50 a.m. this morning. Both southbound lanes were temporarily closed near milemarker 129 but reopened around 9am.
Sam's Club will offer small business loans of up to $25,000 dollars to its small business members. The program will focus on minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses. Sam's Club says 15% of its business members reported they were denied a loan in a November survey.

Scientists at Duke University have figured out why mercury poses a bigger hazard in seafood caught in the ocean, verses fish caught in fresh water. The research showed that chloride in ‘ocean salt water’ sticks to the more dangerous form of mercury (known as methyl mercury) in a way that makes it harder for sunlight to break down the mercury. The scientists found that it took at least 10 times longer to break down the mercury in salt water than in fresh water fish. The findings were published in Nature Geo-science.

Passport fees will soon be on the rise. Starting next Tuesday (July 13), adult passport book fees will jump to $135 dollars from $100, while those for minors will increase to $105 dollars from $85. A 13-year-old boy was shot in the neck yesterday afternoon near the Claremont Court Apartments in northeast Greensboro. The boy was listed in stable but very serious condition at Moses Cone Hospital. With the budget approved and no pay raises for the second straight year, officials in Winston-Salem are looking to have employees work 10-hour days, four days a week. The City Manager and department heads will have to approve the request. City services will have to stay the same. Scientists at Duke University have figured out why mercury poses a bigger hazard in seafood caught in the ocean, verses fish caught in fresh water. The research showed that chloride in ‘ocean salt water’ sticks to the more dangerous form of mercury (known as methyl mercury) in a way that makes it harder for sunlight to break down the mercury. The scientists found that it took at least 10 times longer to break down the mercury in salt water than in fresh water fish. The findings were published in Nature Geo-science.

Mortgage rates on 30-year loans hitting another record low for the second straight week. Freddie Mac reported rates for 30-year fixed loans dropped to 4.58%. The average 15-year rate fell to a record 4.04%. Even with record-low rates, U.S. home sales continue to fall. Now that Hurricane Alex has lost nearly all of its punch, crews along the Gulf states are hoping that they can get back to cleaning up the massive oil spill sometime this weekend. Airline carriers at Piedmont Triad International Airport have added five new flights. An employee at a local church is accused of embezzling a large sum of money. Kathy Sechriest has been charged with embezzling $186,000 dollars from Zion United Church of Christ in Thomasville. A collision between several vehicles including a Gospel singer’s tour bus and a tractor trailer had all the northbound lanes of I-85 shut down just over the Gaston County line yesterday, sending 10 people to the hospital. The bus belongs to Christian singers Mike and Kelly Bowling. Southern Gospel singer Terah Crabb was also on the bus. Crabb broke her arm but will be okay. Two people (including Mike) were airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Daniel with Joy FM will join us at 9:20 this morning with an update.

The National Weather Service reporting, last month, that the temperature at PTI (the airport in Greensboro) reached an average of 79.8 degrees, higher than the 79 degrees set back in June 1952. Toyota reporting that 270,000 cars sold worldwide, including luxury Lexus sedans, have potentially faulty engines. A recall is possibly in the works.
A pedestrian was struck and killed earlier this morning in Stokes County. Deputies responding to the accident near Pine Hall Road between Hanes Rd. and Community Rd. The pedestrian died from injuries sustained in the accident. Investigators are still trying to determine how the accident happened.
One person was killed and three others were injured in an accident on Westchester Drive in High Point yesterday afternoon. 29 year old Talia Oxendine, of Thomasville was driving a minivan along Westchester when she was clipped by another driver causing her minivan to overturn. Oxendine was ejected from the minivan and was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges have been filed.
Tropical Storm Alex is weakening as it moves farther into Mexico. Now, the major threat from Alex…flooding. Rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 inches are possible in the mountains of northern Mexico through Friday. Dangerous flooding and mud slides are likely. Alex hit a relatively unpopulated stretch of the Mexican Gulf coast. One death has been associated with the storm. About a quarter of the swine flu vaccine produced for the US public has expired - meaning that a whopping 40 million doses worth about $260 million dollars – will soon be destroyed. The outdated Swine Flu vaccine, some of which expired yesterday, will be incinerated. The amount, more than twice the usual leftovers, likely sets a record. And that's not even all of it. About 30 million more doses will expire later in the year. If all that Swine Flu vaccine expires, more than 43% of the vaccine for the U.S. public will have gone to waste. Federal officials have defended the huge purchase as a necessary risk in the face of a never-before-seen virus.
