Theives have been targeting churches in Davidson County and they haven’t even had to break-in to take something valuable. AC units have been stolen from several churches including Open Door Baptist on Clyde Fitzgerald Road. The estimated cost to replace the three air conditioning units stolen last week will cost between $25,000 to $30,000 dollars. -Experts say that the theft of air conditioners and copper wiring from those units typically increases as the price paid for scrap metal goes up. Currently, the price paid for copper is close to $3.00 per pound. -Copper wire thieves move fast. Sheriff Grice saying of a surveillance video of one recent AC theft showed that it took 2 robbers just three minutes to strip copper wiring from a residential air conditioning unit. -Experts suggest that churches keep their church grounds well-lit, install security cameras and even put up chain-link cages around their air conditioning units
