Nearly 1 million General Electric coffee makers sold exclusively at Walmart are being recalled after dozens of reports of overheating and fires. The recall involves coffee makers, with the GE logo printed on the base, sold in white or black from March 2008 through January of this year. The model numbers involved are 169164 and 169165.

Wal-Mart is pulling an entire line of Miley Cyrus-brand necklaces and bracelets from its shelves after tests found that the jewelry contained high levels of the toxic metal ‘cadmium’. FYI: Long-term exposure to cadmium can lead to bone softening and kidney failure. www.walmart.com


Dangerous ‘Show and Tell’? Two 5th-graders at Sumner Elementary in Greensboro are being disciplined after bringing guns to school yesterday morning. One of the students brought a toy gun, while the other brought an unloaded .22-caliber handgun. No one was injured.

City leaders in Winston-Salem are considering a new law that would make it illegal for stores to sell spray paint to minors or for minors to possess spray paint in designated areas. The city is wanting to amend it’s graffiti ordinance adopted in 2008. Violators will face a misdemeanor charge and a fine of up to $500 dollars. The new rules are based on similar ordinances in Statesville, Chicago and Los Angeles. A public hearing will be held on June 7.

The mothers of three American hikers detained in Iran met with their children earlier today. Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal have been detained since last July. Their families say the three accidentally strayed across an unmarked border into Iran while on a hiking trip in Kurdistan in northern Iraq. While many local school systems are preparing for budget cuts with proposed teacher furloughs and layoffs, the Stokes County School System is hoping that lawmakers in Raleigh will amend current law to save money and teacher jobs. The Stokes County School Board is wanting to cut five days from next year's school calendar and make up the classroom time by adding 10-12 minutes onto each school day. A South Carolina woman who was pulled over after being clocked at 102 mph in a 45 mph zone told officers she knew she was speeding faster than 100 mph, but she was upset because she was late for a hair appointment. According to Union police, 72-year-old Sandra Powell, of Spartanburg, was driving her Buick Tuesday - speeding and “all over the road” on Highway 176.

A man driving the wrong way on US 52 caused an accident that killed himself and another driver. Police said the accident happened on South Bound 52 near Germanton Road around 1am this morning. Amick Lee Horn was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of highway 52 when he collided head-on with a car driven by David William Byrd. Greensboro Police says a second person has died from injuries sustained in the second accident on I-40 on Mothers Day in Greensboro. Police say, 24 year old Matthew Yancey Warren, died last night at Moses Cone Hospital from injuries sustained in the crash. The front seat passenger, Latisha Jones died at the scene of the crash on May 10. Police say the 2008 Chevy Cobalt Phillips was driving collided with a tractor trailer at mile marker 218 around 10:15 p.m. on May 10. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
