-The 23rd Annual National Night Out event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday on Main Street in Lexington, NC.
-Thomaville will also hold its celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. at the police department at the corner of West Guilford and Trade streets.
-From 7 PM to 10 PM on Tuesday, August 1st, residents in Rural Hall are asked to turn on their porch lights and spend the evening with their neighbors. Many Rural Hall neighborhoods will be hosting block parties and get-togethers.

As many as 60,000 people a year die from malignant skin cancer…as a result of too much sun, mostly, according to the World Health Organization. About 90% of skin cancers are caused by over exposure ultraviolet light from the sun. Ultraviolet light is needed to activate production of vitamin D in the body…but too much sun can be dangerous -- and even deadly.
The WTO report advises that people seek shade, use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and stay out of tanning salons. (CNN / BBC)

Actor Mel Gibson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol last Friday morning. Gibson said he has "battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regrets the horrific relapse," A spokesperson saying that Gibson has "already taken necessary steps to ensure his return to health." (CNN)

The latest from the Middle East: The fighting continues between Israel and Hezbollah militants.
Israel has carried out more air strikes in southern Lebanon today, despite an agreement to halt raids for 48 hours.
Israel said it would suspended air attacks on south Lebanon for two days starting Monday…in the face of widespread outrage over an airstrike on a house that fatally wounded 56 Lebanese, almost all of them women and children.
In addition to suspending air attacks, Israel will also allow Lebanese civilians who want to leave south Lebanon for the north while allowing for humanitarian assistance.
Secretary of state Condelezza Rice is "convinced" that a cease-fire can come this week (FOX NEWS CHANNEL)

G.S. 105-164.13C provides an exemption for certain items of tangible personal property sold between 12:01 A.M. on the first Friday in August and 11:59 P.M. the following Sunday.
Clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item; sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item, computers of $3,500 or less per item; and computer supplies of $250 or less per item will be exempt.
Clothing accessories, jewelry, cosmetics, protective equipment, wallets, furniture, items used in a trade or business, and rentals are not covered by the exemption and will be subject to the applicable tax.

With temperatures in the low 90’s…add in the humidity…it will feel like 100 degrees today.
-A Heat Index over 100 can pose a health risk to the elderly, children and anyone working or exercising outside.
-Please limit your time outdoors today.
-If you have to be outside: take frequent breaks in the shade or inside in the air condition. Remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Relief from the heat is on the way: At least 98 deaths being attributed to the heat wave that has gripped California since July 16.
Some relief may be on the way. The National Weather Service said temperatures in most parts of California are expected to drop below 100 by this weekend.

Four people (including an unborn child) were fatally wounded in the head-on collision early yesterday morning on Highway 109 near South Davidson High School. Funeral arrangements are pending.

A 26-year-old Davidson County woman is in serious condition after being was attacked by two pit bull dogs on Thursday. Police in Lexington said they found Kelly Lynn Bell lying in a ditch with several severe dog bites on her body. She was taken to Wake Forest / Baptist Medical Center for surgery. Authorities are holding the dogs while they investigate the incident.

Up to 15,000 Israeli Reserveists are waiting orders to be called up to support Israeli troops already on the ground.

Tour de France winner American Floyd Landis is under suspision…
Cycling's world governing body told the US Team yesterday that Landis had tested positive for high levels of testosterone during the Tour de France.
If Landis is found guilty of doping, he could be stripped of his title.

Four leaders in China's underground Protestant church have been sentenced to two years in a Chinese Labor Camp.
The four were sentenced to "re-education through labor"…after appealing to officers for the release of 14 congregants seized in a raid on a non-sanctioned church service that morning. Chinese law permits police to pass sentences of up to three years in labor camps without trial.

In California , temperatures topping 100 degrees for an 11th straight day. Heat related deaths have reached 83 so far.

The Israeli military predicts a "few more weeks" of combat
Nine Israeli soldiers were fatally wounded in southern Lebanon
And it seems that Hezbollah is not only militia fighting Israel in Lebanon

In a dramatic turnaround from her first murder trial, Andrea Yates has been found ‘not guilty by reason of insanity’ in the drowning of her 5 children in a bathtub back in 2001. Yates will be committed to a state mental hospital and held until she is no longer deemed a threat to society.

Officials have confirmed the 18th case of rabies in Guilford County this year. This is the third rabies case so far this week. The Guilford County Department of Public Health said a raccoon located on Monnett Road in southeast Guilford County tested positive for the rabies virus.
North Carolina law requires that all dogs and cats four months of age and older must be vaccinated against rabies.

In a surprising decision, the Washington State Supreme Court has ruled that a law restricting marriage to one man and one woman, passed by the Washington Legislature in 1998, is constitutional.
Massachusetts remains the only state in the U.S. where same-sex "marriage" is legal.

A Medieval book of psalms was unearthed in Dublin, Ireland by a construction worker last week.
The 20-page book of Palms has been dated to the years 800-1000AD. The book was found open to a page describing, in Latin script, Psalm 83, in which God hears complaints of other nations' attempts to wipe out the name of Israel.

Veteran NASCAR driver and commentator Benny Parsons has begun chemo treatments after learning that he has lung cancer. Parson’s was diagnosed with cancer 2 weeks ago.

The latest from the Middle East: The fighting continues between Israel and Hezbollah militants. The United Nations is accusing Israel of intentially bombing a U.N. Observer post in southern Lebanon…killing 4 U.N. observers.

A 15-year-old boy was killed in an ATV accident Sunday afternoon in Wilkes County. Jacob Scott would have been a sophomore at North Wilkes High School this fall. Investigators said Scott and his friend were riding on Harold Mountain Road when they crashed into each other. Ball was thrown from his ATV and suffered a broken arm. Scott was killed instantly, according to authorities.
No charges have been filed. Neither teen was wearing a helmet, according to investigators.

First millennium manuscript, open to Psalm 83, found in Irish mud
Irish archaeologists are excited about the discovery of an ancient book of psalms found by a construction worker using a backhoe.
The 20-page book has been dated to the years 800-1000. An expert from Trinity College said it was the first discovery of an Irish early medieval document in two centuries.

A statue of Barney Fife has literally been ‘nipped in the bud’.
Tom Hellebrand of Mount Airy The prime backer of the Fife monument has ordered the statue…destroyed.
Hellebrand wanted the statue to stand in Mount Airy, Griffith's hometown and the model for the show's fictional Mayberry, N.C.
Work was halted after Paramount/CBS withdrew its approval, saying it didn't have the authority to grant permission for a likeness of Don Knotts.
Knotts' widow and Andy Griffith endorsed a statue…BUT not in Mt Airy instead Knotts’ hometown of Morgantown, W.V. BUT the statue should not be of Fife…but of Don Knotts
Hellebrand is selling his house and his restaurant (the Mayberry Kountry Kitchen) in Mount Airy because of the strain from three months on the project.
Don Knotts who played Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show died in February.

Rain in the forecast...with temperatures in the mid-80’s today in the Triad.
Much of the nation feeling the heat. An eighth day of intense heat out west.
-Record-breaking temperatures in Phoenix yesterday…114.
-Residents in California are being asked to conserve electricity while hoping to avoid rolling blackouts.
-Meanwhile, utility workers in the St. Louis and New York City are still trying to restore power to hundreds of thousands whose electricity was knocked out by storms and equipment failures.

If you had some trouble accessing your MySpace site yesterday…blame it on the heat wave in California. MySpace was shut down for more than half a day following record-breaking heat and power outages in Los Angeles where its data servers are housed.

The fighting continues between Israel and Hezbollah militants.
Israel’s Prime Minister stating firmly that Israel will continue its offensive against Hezbollah militants in southern Lebanon. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in Jerusalem for talks with officials in Israel. Fierce fighting has been reported in south Lebanon today.

President Bush has signed a bill in support of Old Glory…barring condominium and homeowner associations from restricting how the American flag can be displayed. It was passed unanimously by both the House and the Senate. The legislation prohibits those groups from preventing residents from displaying an American flag on their own property.
Crime still doesn’t pay…An 83-year-old Greensboro man fought off a would be criminal using his walking cane.According to Police, Robert Flynn was approached by a man Monday night in a dark-colored car asking for a cigarette. When Flynn told the man he didn't have one, the suspect got out of his car, pointed a shotgun at the elderly man, then demanded money. Flynn struck the shotgun with his cane and ran around his vehicle. The man approached Flynn again with the shotgun. Flynn struck the suspect numerous times in the head and shoulders with his cane, driving him away.Police say would be criminal left empty-handed…last seen traveling South on O'Henry Boulevard.


Barnes and Noble Bookstores are collecting books for needy libraries along the Gulf. You can drop off ‘donated’ books through the end of July. Barnes and Noble is hoping to collect 2,000 books by the end of summer.

One fisherman is recovering from surgery after he was speared in the chest and knocked into the Atlantic Ocean by a Blue Marlin during a fishing competition off Bermuda's coast over the weekend.
Ian Card, 32, and his father, Alan, both operators of a charter fishing boat and experienced marlin fishermen, had just hooked the fish Saturday when it suddenly leaped out of the water, impaled Ian Card just below his collar bone and knocked him into the ocean.
The younger fisherman managed to struggle free. The father cut the line and helped his son get back into their boat.
The fishermen estimated the marlin measured 14 feet…and weighing about 800 pounds.

Late day storms over the weekend…some severe:
-Willow Creek Golf Course in Northern Davidson County was totally under water -Several trees were knocked over by wind in Greensboro’s Adams Farm area.
-10 to 15 trees fell near High Point’s Morris Farm Fire Station.
-Downed trees landed on several cars in the nearby Riverview Condominiums.

The National Guard is evacuating residents of St. Louis who are sweltering in the summer heat without power for fans or air conditioning. A dangerous storm hit St Louis last week. Power isn't expected to be restored for many until later this week.

The latest from the Middle East:
The fighting continues between Israel and Hezbollah militants. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will meet with officials in Israel today.

Nationwide gas prices have hit an all-time high. During the last two weeks, gas prices rising nearly 2 cents to just over $3 per gallon. Nationwide, the lowest price for regular was $2.77 a gallon in Charleston, S.C., while the highest — $3.28 a gallon — was in San Diego.

Mortgage rates going up as well…30 year loans average 6.8%…the highest level since 2002.
