Homeschoolers from Germany win asylum in the U.S. In a decision bound to send a shock wave through the European Union, a US federal immigration judge has granted political asylum in the United States to a German family whose members feared persecution if returned to their home country because of their decision to homeschool. The Romeike family including their 5 children are now living in Eastern Tennessee. "We can't expect every country to follow our Constitution," said the opinion by Judge Lawrence O. Burman. "The world might be a better place if it did. Germany effectively has made homeschooling illegal because of laws dating back to the pre-World War II move as Hitler rose to power and tried to make raising and training children a responsibility of the government. Mike Donnelly (Home School Legal Defense Association) noted it was the first time ever America has granted political asylum to Christian homeschoolers fleeing German persecution. HSLDA officials estimate there are some 400 homeschool families in Germany. Virtually all of them are either forced into hiding or facing court actions.

SEISMOLOGISTS ARE URGING CAUTION IN THE REBUILDING OF HAITI. Some officials are recommending building standards like those used in California and Japan. A national coalition of women's groups including the National Organization for Women is calling on CBS to scrap its plan to broadcast an ad during the Super Bowl featuring college football star Tim Tebow and his mother, which critics say is likely to convey an anti-abortion message.
CBS said it has approved the script for the 30-second ad and has given no indication that the protest would have an impact. The ad — paid for by Focus on the Family — is expected to recount the story of Pam Tebow's pregnancy in 1987 with a theme of "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life." After getting sick during a mission trip to the Philippines, Pam ignored a recommendation by doctors to abort her fifth child and gave birth to Tim, who went on to win the 2007 Heisman Trophy while helping his Florida gators to win two BCS championships. www.salisburypost.com/Sports/012610-cbs

Here's a new warning from health experts: Sitting could be deadly.
Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for prolonged periods - even if you also exercise regularly - could be bad for your health. And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place - at the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV - just the overall number of hours it occurs. Research is preliminary, but several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.

WBFJ is celebrating life during Sanctity of Human Life Week
TODAY marks the 37th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in the U.S. Sanctity of Human Life Sunday is this Sunday…

Dr. Alveda King, Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., responded this week to Planned Parenthood's King Day press release linking the work of the abortion business to the civil rights leader. "Every year Planned Parenthood tries to imply that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would approve of what it does today because he received the Margaret Sanger Award from the organization 44 years ago, back in 1966," said Dr. King. "Every year they lie.” www.christiannewswire.com/news/427212795.html
FYI: Priests for Life is the nation's largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia. www.priestsforlife.org.

Secretary of State Clinton was presented the Margaret Sanger Award in 2009
“I admire Margaret Sanger enormously, her courage, her tenacity, her vision…”
http://www.catholic.org/politics/story.php?id=32917

FYI: Margaret Sanger, who founded Planned Parenthood, was a proponent of eugenics, advocating selective breeding, sterilization and euthanasia. In 1932, Sanger urged “a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is already tainted or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring.”

The situation in Haiti…
The State Department is reporting that most of the damage from Tuesday’s 7.0 earthquake has been centered in Port-au-Prince, the capital city of Haiti.
-Rubble caused by the quake is hindering the delivery of supplies to victims.
-The Red Cross estimates that the quake has affected about 3 million people- that’s about one third of Haiti’s population.
-Eight U-S embassy personnel have been injured, four of them seriously.
The State Department has ordered the evacuation of embassy spouses,
children and non-essential personnel.
-The US is offering military and humanitarian assistance to Haiti.
-Charlotte based Bank of America just one of many companies and organizations sending financial aid Haiti.
Half of Bank of America's $1 million dollar commitment covers a grant to the American Red Cross for the Haitian Relief and Development Fund. The other $500,000 will cover long-term recovery, including restoring basic medical services and rebuilding homes and schools.
-American Airlines is flying relief supplies to the country and other companies are donating funds and their products to the relief effort.

Some Good News: The Dominican Republic was the first country to give aid to Haiti in the aftermath of Tuesday's devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Some tensions still exist between citizens of both countries. Dominicans recall how they were treated under Haitian rule for a period in the mid-1800s. Today, Haitians provide cheap labor in the Dominican Republic, a trend that has caused resentment on both sides, not unlike the illegal immigration debate
in the US. www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/01/13/haiti.earthquake.dominican.republic/index.html
