for the first time yesterday that the Second Amendment provides all Americans a fundamental right to bear arms.
The Supreme Court was also split between liberals and conservatives in its 5-4 ruling against a Christian student group saying that the University of California's Hastings College of the Law can legally deny recognition to a Christian student group that won't let homosexuals join. Some local fireworks displays over the 4th are in limbo? City officials in Reidsville have canceled their traditional Fourth of July fireworks display over Lake Reidsville due to budget constraints. The number of women who don't have children is going up, according to a new study. An analysis by the Pew Research Center shows that nearly one in five American women beyond childbearing years never gave birth…and fewer couples view having children as a necessity to a good marriage. In 2008, 18% of women ages 40-44 did not have children. That's up from 10% in 1976. The numbers coincide with broader U.S. trends of women waiting later to marry and an increase of women working outside the home. Women now outnumber men in the work force. The figures also suggest that U.S. minorities will become the majority by mid-century.

Richard Butler wanted his girlfriend Bethany Lott to think they were just taking a scenic hike in the North Carolina Mountains. But, Richard had a secret plan. Once he and Bethany reached the top of the peak they were hiking…he planned to pull out a ring and ask her to be his bride.
However, a severe storm hit Max Patch Bald near Asheville where the Knoxville couple was hiking. A lightning bolt struck the couple. Richard and girlfriend, Bethany were knocked cold. “She didn't say anything. I turned around and she was laying a few feet away, and I crawled to her," he told reporters on Monday. Richard attempted CPR for 15 minutes and then tried to call out on her cell phone…but no signal. Richard left his fiancee lying on the hill and drove to the first home he found. A father and his son, who was home on leave from the Navy, jumped in Richard’s truck and raced back to assist Bethany. Rescuers tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Bethany. A funeral service will be held this week in Tennessee. FYI: Richard suffered third-degree burns on his feet.

BP HAS MADE SOME PROGRESS IN CONTAINING THE MASSIVE OIL LEAK IN THE GULF OF MEXICO. A containment cap placed on the blown-out well in the Gulf is collecting about 10 thousand barrels of oil a day…out of the 19 thousand barrels of oil leaking into the Gulf. (CNN)

As if the pictures of birds and fish coated in floating oil in the Gulf of Mexico is not disturbing enough, scientists at the University of South Florida now say they have found evidence of another oil plume gushing oil in the northeastern Gulf. Through microscopic fingerprinting, university researchers were able to show the oil in the second plume came from BP's blown out oil well. BP is denying the latest claims. NOAA and the University of South Florida will hold a joint press conference Tuesday morning to release their final findings.

But I’m still here, really: One man near Nashville is trying to prove he's still alive. While applying for college, he found out the government said he died last summer. 28 year old Jonathan Hostetler said that the whole “’you’re dead thing’ started out kind of funny, but now it's really starting to get aggravating." Last week, Jonathan applied to an art school and was told to qualify for financial aid. When Hostetler called the IRS office for advice, he got a surprise. The lady from the IRS snickered and informed Jonathan that, ‘according to the Social Security office, you're deceased". He did some checking, and after looking up his name on public sites linked to the Social Security death index, he found his birth date, Social Security number and birthplace listed. It also lists his death date as August 2009. For several days, Jonathan said, he tried calling the IRS and Social Security offices but kept getting a busy signal or voice mail.
His main concern right now is that his public information is listed on the Web for anyone to see. http://www.wsmv.com/news/23759997/detail.html?hpt=T2

The rules taking effect today say that companies that service mortgages must stop foreclosure activity once a homeowner asks for a loan modification.
