The New York Times reporting that wireless giant Verizon is saying NO to a pro-abortion text messaging plan from NARAL to its supporters.
Verizon says it has the right to block controversial or unsavory text messages.The newspaper saying that other wireless providers have agreed to let NARAL use their networks.

A second day of demonstrations in the country of Burma has turned deadly.
‘Christian Solidarity Worldwide’ (based in London) reporting that Burma has been one of the world’s worst and most under-reported for human rights violations for many years.
Tens-of-thousands of Buddhist monks, nuns, and other people have been demonstrating peacefully for nearly a month against the military regime that rules Burma

Teaneck officials in New Jersey will meet with parents who are fuming after police ticketed middle schoolers for jaywalking. Some of the Thomas Jefferson Middle School students are as young as 11. About half a dozen students were returned to school in police cars so their parents could be notified. Principal of the school says students were warned to stay on the sidewalk.Police say they are responding to complaints from neighbors.

An original manuscript of the MAGNA CARTA is going to the auction block in December. The Alamance-Burlington School Board has voted to ban corporal punishment in all of its schools. The board said schools can still use reasonable force to remove or control behavior if needed. Alamance-Burlington School Superintendent Dr. Randy Bridges supports the ban, citing legal liabilities the school system could face. (Fox8)

A GROUP OF BOY SCOUTS MADE IT BACK TO CIVILAZATION YESTERDAY MORNING. Eight boys and their scout leaders became lost on Sunday after a weekend camping trip in the North Carolina Mountains. The Scouts decided to camp overnight.

PRESIDENT BUSH AND THE PRESIDENT OF IRAN will address the
United Nations today. Iran’s leader spoke at New York’s Columbia University on Monday.

A storm brewing in the Gulf just west of Tampa, Florida continues to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to parts of the Florida Panhandle and southern Georgia. Residents in Louisiana are keeping an eye on this storm. (http://www.weather.com/)

Two students were shot at Delaware State University early this morning. The campus was locked down as police continue their search for the gunman. Classes have been cancelled today at Delaware State University. (CNN)

A large but peaceful demonstration in Jena, Louisiana on Thursday. Thousands of people from across the country traveled to the small Louisiana town in support of the six black teenagers known as the ‘Jena 6’.

Sesame Street heading to China…The maker of Big Bird and Elmo will send auditors to factories and stores in China to check for lead and other problems in the toys. Last month, Mattel recalled nearly 1 million toys -- including 400,000 Sesame Street licensed toys -- because of lead contamination. About 80% of the $22 billion dollars in toys sold each year are imported from China. (FOX NEWS)

Racial tensions running high in Jena. A massive demonstration expected to draw thousands at a rally in the small town of Jena, Louisiana. Hundreds of people including students from Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina A&T and Bennett College have traveled to Louisiana to show support for six black teenagers known as the Jena Six.

Pilots with Mission Aviation Fellowship are flying in doctors to help fight an Ebola Outbreak in the Republic of Congo. At least 150 people have lost their lives to the highly contagious infection.

Permission denied: During his visit to New York City next week, the President of Iran ( Mah-moud Ah-ma-di-ne-jad ) wanted to lay a wreath at the former World Trade Center site … but the request was denied because of ongoing construction at Ground Zero. Lights out for residents in the City by the Bay ?
Organizers of "Lights Out San Francisco" are asking residents and businesses to turn off all unnecessary lights for an hour on Saturday night October 20.
The goal is to save 15% of the electricity consumed on an average Saturday night.
-The San Francisco Restaurant Association plans to promote the environmental ambiance next month as part of a campaign to conserve energy.
-Most of the lighting on the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge will be turned off, as well as at City Hall, other municipal buildings and at Alcatraz.
-The campaign will also be giving away more than 100,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs in the next month to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Thomasville and the city of Burlington are the latest communities now under voluntary water restrictions. Officials saying that everyone in the state should limit watering lawns, car washing and take shorter showers.

The University of Florida is investigating the ‘taser incident’ involving a student who was escorted out of an open Q and A forum with Senator John Kerry. Hundreds of people (including students from Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina A&T State University and Bennett College) are making their way to Jeana, Louisiana. Thousands expected to attend a civil rights rally on Thursday to protest the outcome of a racially-charged school yard beating that has gained national attention.

THE FEDERAL RESERVE HAS CUT A KEY INTEREST RATE BY HALF A PERCENTAGE POINT ON TUESDAY.
The number of foreclosures filed in the U.S. last month more than doubled since August of last year. The national foreclosure rate last month was one filing for every 510 households. Foreclosure filings include default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions.

Supporters of traditional marriage winning a legal victory in Maryland on Tuesday. Maryland’s ban on same-sex unions has been ruled constitutional. Maryland law defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Michael Hayes believes he no longer deserves to be in a mental institution. Hayes was convicted of ‘not guilty by reason of insanity’ after shooting four people and wounding five others on Old Salisbury Road in Northern Davidson County back in 1988. Hayes is currently serving his sentence at Dorothea Dix Mental Hospital in Raleigh, where he is allowed to leave unsupervised during the day. A commitment hearing began Monday in Forsyth County Court and will continue Tuesday. (FOX8)

The State Department is leading the investigation into a deadly gun battle involving a (North Carolina) based security firm working in Iraq. In response, the Iraqi government says it has canceled the license of the Blackwater-U.S. security firm. Officials with Blackwater said its employees acted in self-defense. (CNN)

Medical Park Hospital has filed for state approval to build a new 50-bed acute care hospital in Clemmons. The $96-million dollar facility will be located near I-40 and Harper Road. One-third of men didn't bother to wash up after using the restroom compared with 12 percent of women, said the researchers who ‘observe’ people in public restrooms. The latest study was based on a survey of than 6,000 people in four big cities. Farmers in 85 counties in North Carolina are now eligible for low-interest emergency loans from the federal government to help them recover from crop losses because of this summer’s drought. The Agriculture Department said farmers in the affected areas have suffered losses of at least 30% in at least one significant crop. (WXII)

The owner and operator of Carter Brothers BBQ in High Point passed away on Friday. Darin 'Big Daddy' Carter as he was known was 38-years-old. His funeral will be held on 3pm today at First Wesleyan Church. (FOX8)

Far too many citizens of the world do not enjoy religious freedom. The State Department has released its annual report on Religious Freedom. The three worst countries: Burma, China, and Iran. The good news ….improvements have been made in Vietnam, India, and Saudi Arabia.

OJ SIMPSON IS BEHIND BARS AGAIN. The former football star was arrested Sunday on charges he was involved with the armed robbery of a memorabilia dealer in a Las Vegas hotel room last week. Simpson claiming that he was just retrieving stolen memorabilia that belonged to him. Simpson is facing six felony counts.

Censors used the ‘Bleep Button’ several times last night during the 59th annual Emmy Awards.
The most controversial comment came from Sally Field as she accepted the leading actress award for her role in the ABC program Brothers And Sisters. Storm Humberto formed very quickly in the Gulf on Wednesday… strengthening to hurricane status overnight before making landfall early this morning near the Texas-Louisiana boarder. Sustained winds are near 80mph. Flooding is now the main concern for Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Up to 4 earthquakes hitting the southern region of Indonesia over the past 24 hours. A tsunami alert has been issued. At least 9 fatalities after the first earthquake shook Indonesia on Wednesday.

18 year old Curtis Murphy Jr is in custody after jumping in a stopped daycare van with children inside and drove away. No one was injured in the incident. A van from A-Plus Day Care in High Point was picking up children at about 7 a.m. Wednesday Morning in Winston-Salem when Murphy (armed with a gun) got in the vehicle and drove away. Dangerous ‘show and tell? A fourth-grader at Briarwood Elementary in Charlotte was caught with a .38 caliber hand-gun in his waistband and two bullets in his hand…while at school.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were called in to question the boy.
The boy in trouble had been living with his 21-year-old cousin.

Breaking News (?) Married men and housework do NOT mix.
According to the researchers from George Mason University and North Carolina State University… 17,000 people surveyed (from 28 countries) say that married men do less housework than their spouses. In the study, marriage seems to traditionalize the idea that women ‘are suppose to do more housework’. A 7.9 earthquake rocked southern Indonesia this morning. A tsunami alert has been issued.

Water fountains were turned off at Jonesville Elementary School and the ice was thrown out at John Boy's Barbeque on Highway 67…because of Bacteria that causes E-Coli was found during a routine check of the water supply in Jonesville on Tuesday. Residents in JONESVILLE should still boil water before drinking or cooking with tap water. (WXII)

Local teacher and coach looses her 8 year battle with cancer. Terri Beam was a French teacher at Northwest Guilford Middle School. A salvation celebration will be held tonight at 7 pm at Oak Ridge United Methodist Church. (FOX 8)

With a rash of recalls from China, the safety of toys and other products including fireworks, cigarette lighters, and electrical products will be the topic of a Senate hearing today.

THE FAA IS WARNING THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY THAT IMPROVMENTS NEED TO BE MADE TO IMPROVE ON-TIME PERFORMANCE. If they don’t, the government may take action of its own. The head of the Federal Aviation Administration, Marion Blakey, says while airlines can’t control the weather they can control their own schedules.

A Lexington family is still baffled after spotting an unusual light near North Myrtle Beach last week. The House family first noticed the mysterious light over the Atlantic Ocean on September 5. -North Myrtle Beach police told the family the lights were likely caused by jets from Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, S.C., performing military maneuvers.-According to Jim Sutton, North Carolina president of MU-FON (Mutual UFO Network)…it could have been something more "out-of-this-world”.

The top US Military Commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus told Congress yesterday that he is recommending a limited troop withdrawal in Iraq starting next summer. Petraeus and the U.S. ambassador to Iraq will appear before the Senate Armed Services Committee again this morning. President Bush will address the nation about Iraq later in the week.

In the two weeks since Greensboro began mandatory water estrictions, officials saying that the city's residents have cut back water usage by 11%.Because of the extreme drought…Voluntary Water Restrictions Now in Place for residents in Forsyth County and the city of Lexington.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle brushed the Outer Banks of North Carolina yesterday. No serious damage was reported. The National Hurricane Center says Gabrielle is now a Tropical Depression and is headed back out to sea.

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the southwestern coast of Colombia Sunday night.

The US commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus will speak to Congress today to answer some tough questions about the recent surge of U.S. troops in Iraq and whether it has helped improve security.

After serving more than a year in Iraq, the Army's 105th Engineer Group which is based in Winston-Salem is back home safely. The unit is credited with detecting and destroying more than 2,000 explosive devices in Iraq. What a praise report: no soldiers in the 105th were seriously injured or killed while overseas.

Some 83,000 Chinese-made outdoor candles sold at Ace Hardware stores nationwide are being recalled. The reason: the recalled Hayes citronella "Avant Yarde" candles have unusually high flames and pose a fire hazard. The candles were sold from February 2006 through June 2007 for about $8. Just in time for the Jewish holidays, two lifetime front-row seats to services at a synagogue in Miami’s South Beach are being auctioned off on eBay. The bidding started at $1.8 million dollars. Besides getting to be close to the rabbi, the winner's family name will be engraved on Seats 1 and 2 of Row 1. The winner will also receive free parking, and two custom-made prayer shawls. Plus, the winning bidder can pass the seats down to his or her children. The auction ends this evening…but as of Saturday afternoon, no one had made a wager. Rabbi Rose said he wasn't surprised. CHRISTIAN RELIEF AGENCIES ARE JOINING OTHER RELIEF WORKERS IN DELIVERING MUCH NEEDED AID TO VICTIMS OF HURRICANE FELIX IN NICARAGUA. The death and destruction from the storm is turning out to be greater than was first thought. Flooding and mudslides have made it difficult for supplies to be delivered in some areas.Felix crashed ashore at the Nicaragua-Honduras border as a category five hurricane last week. At least one-hundred people lost their lives.

President Bush has declared today through Sunday as National Days of Prayer and Remembrance for the victims (and their families) of September 11, 2001. Next Tuesday marks the sixth anniversary of the 9-11 terror attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC.
The AP reporting that the parents of 4 year old Madeleine McCann -the British girl who disappeared four months ago… will be named as formal suspects in the case today.

Day 5 in the search for millionaire aviator Steve Fossett who has been missing since Monday.

THE CDC in Atlanta has released a disturbing report about suicide among pre-teens and young adults. Suicide by people between the ages of ten and 24 rose eight percent in 2004. That was the largest increase in 15 years.

Good News / Bad news: The National Survey on Drug Use and Health finds that overall illicit drug use among children ages 12 to 17 is at a five year low. But, the report stresses that prescription drug abuse is up among teens.

How about a store credit? Apple CEO Steve Jobs has responded to hundreds of irate customers who were some of the first to purchase the Apple i-phone…after Apple announced that it was cutting the price of the 8 gigabyte i-phone by $200 dollars. Apple is offering a one-hundred dollar credit to all those customers who paid full price for the iPhone.

The US Navy has re-directed one of its ships to the coast of Nicaragua to help with relief efforts from Hurricane Felix which made landfall earlier this week. The death toll from Felix has risen to 100.

The attorneys for three players falsely accused in the Duke lacrosse case will be filing a $30 million dollar civil rights lawsuit against the city of Durham.

A simple game of Hide - and – seek gets a kindergartner kicked off the school bus for two weeks.
A 5 year old at Erskine Elementary school in Indiana was suspended from school transportation for two weeks because he hid from a bus driver. After dropping off students, the bus driver then left to pick up children at another school - with the boy still on the bus. The driver discovered him after hearing him giggle. Funeral arrangements have been announced for Dr D. James Kennedy. The founder of Coral Ridge Ministries in Fort Lauderdale, Florida passed away in his sleep early Wednesday morning. Italian opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti passed away at his Italian home earlier. Pavarotti had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. He was 71-years old.

APPLE HAS DROPPED THE PRICE OF ITS POPULAR i-PHONE AND UNVEILED AN UPDATED LINE OF IPODS. Apple says it’s cutting the price of the eight gigabyte i-Phone by two-hundred dollars. The improved version of the popular iPod can now hold 40-thousand songs or two-hundred hours of video. The one-millionth i-Phone will likely be sold by the end of September.

Five nuclear warheads on a B-52 bomber that made their way half way across the US were in violation of military policy. The Military Times reports the B-52 flew from an Air Force Base in North Dakota to an Air Base in Louisiana. Because the mistake wasn’t discovered until the plane landed in Louisiana, the warheads were technically unaccounted for during the entire three-and-a-half hour flight -- even though they were in Air Force custody the entire time. Nuclear warheads are never to be transported by air.

President Bush has declared Friday through Sunday as National Days of Prayer and Remembrance for the victims (and their families) of September 11, 2001. Next Tuesday marks the sixth anniversary of the terror attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC on 9-11-2001.

The flames are under control, but a fire at an eastern Guilford County
yard waste landfill yesterday could burn for weeks. The fire started off Wild Turkey Road around noon yesterday.

Hurricane Mitch from 1998, which stalled out over Central America, causing flooding and mudslides that killed nearly 11,000 people and left more than 8,000 missing.

In the Pacific: Hurricane Henriette made landfall at southern tip of Baja California on Tuesday. In the Western Pacific, Typhoon Fitow is expected to make landfall early Thursday morning. The southern coast of Japan is on alert.

The new head of the UN is in Sudan to get a first hand look at the on-going violence in the Darfur region of Sudan. This is Secretary General Ban ki-Moon’s first visit to the African nation. The violence in Darfur has claimed 200-thousand lives and displaced more than two-million people from their homes since 2003.

The search will resume this morning in Nevada for Millionaire aviator Steve Fossett. The search for the pilot began on Tuesday after Fossett took off in a single engine plane on Monday.

Authorities in Germany have arrested three suspects in a terrorist plot against an American air base in Germany. The three have ties with al-Qaeda. (CNN)

Senator Larry Craig is possibly reconsidering his decision to resign.
The Idaho Republican has hired a lawyer to look into the possibility of reversing a guilty plea the senator entered to a disorderly conduct charge earlier this month. That plea came after the senator was arrested by an undercover police officer in a men’s room at the Minneapolis airport.
The pastor of the South Korean hostages says that he hopes that the recent ordeal will not be a stumbling block to missions. Pastor Park Eun-jo (YEWN-joh) says he feels great responsibility for the two hostages who were killed. The pastor says the other hostages did not that two of their colleagues had been murdered by their Taliban captors until after they had been released.The hostages were released last week after the South Korean government struck a deal with the Taliban militants. (8am) Hurricane Felix has made landfall in northeastern Nicaragua as a Category 5 storm. Sustained winds are over 160 mph. Heavy rains from Felix could bring flash flooding and mudslides to the mountainous areas of Central America.

Two women stopped to help after seeing children get out of a crashed car early Sunday morning near the Rock Creek Dairy Road exit of I-40/85 in eastern Guilford County. Becca Cowan and Latoya Simmons, were trying to get the children out of the car when state troopers said a pickup hit their minivan, killing Simmons. (WFMY / Fox8)

In an effort to increase student safety, several high schools in North Carolina are threatening to revoke parking privileges if students don't buckle up.
Governor Easley's Highway Safety Program allows school officials to check students as they drive off school grounds. If students aren't buckled up…parking passes can be taken away. At least five schools in Catawba County have already implemented the program this summer.
