A Federal Appeals Court has thrown out a $5 million dollar lawsuit against the controversial Westboro Baptist Church whose members are known for picketing the funerals of American service men and women…while holding inflammatory signs. In 2007, a Maryland jury awarded the family of a U.S. Marine ten million dollars in damages, after the family sued Westboro Baptist based in Topeka, Kansas. . A judge later reduced the amount to five million. But late last week, a three-judge panel of the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the church should not pay any award in the case. The judges wrote that while the church's signs were, what they called, "distasteful and repugnant" they were still protected free speech. Westboro Baptist Church has about 60 or 70 members. Nearly 50 of them are children, grandchildren, or in-laws of founding Pastor Fred Phelps.

Gas prices keep coming down nationwide. In North Carolina…gas prices averaging around $2.39 a gallon.

The government is starting an unprecedented system to track possible side effects as mass H1N1 flu vaccinations begin next month. The idea is to detect any rare but real problems quickly, and explain the inevitable coincidences that are sure to cause some false alarms. "Every day, bad things happen to people. When you vaccinate a lot of people in a short period of time, some of those things are going to happen to some people by chance alone," said Dr. Daniel Salmon, a vaccine safety specialist at the Department of Health and Human Services.
Health authorities hope to vaccinate well over half the population in just a few months against swine flu, which doctors call the 2009 H1N1 strain. That would be a feat. No more than 100 million Americans usually get vaccinated against regular winter flu, and never in such a short period. So the CDC is racing to compile a list of what's normal: 25,000 heart attacks every week; 14,000 to 19,000 miscarriages every week; 300 severe allergic reactions called anaphylaxis every week. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,556160,00.html?test=latestnews

A BAN ON TEXTING IN ALL 50 STATES BY THE YEAR 2013: THAT'S THE GOAL OF A NEW CAMPAIGN JUST LAUNCHED BY TRIPLE A. Currently, 18 states and the District of Columbia have laws that address text messaging by all drivers…two more states have laws that prohibit teens or other new drivers from texting while driving. In North Carolina: a ‘NO texting or emailing while driving’ law goes into effect starting December 1st. Violators could face a $100 dollar fine, plus court costs. The automobile club says its research finds that nearly 20% of U.S. drivers admit to texting while driving at least once in the last 30 days. But Triple A also finds that 80 to 90% of Americans would support a ban on texting while driving. http://www.wral.com/news/state/story/5394218/

Get your flu shots or else? Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is requiring all faculty, staff, students and volunteers in the hospital and its subsidiaries be vaccinated for the flu, the hospital system announced Thursday. The new policy applies both to seasonal and the H1N1 swine flu virus vaccinations. Only employees with religious or medical reasons are exempt. A GROUP OF CONSERVATIVE MEMBERS OF THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA ARE BEGINNING THE PROCESS OF FORMING WHAT THEY CALL AN "ALTERNATIVE CHURCH FELLOWSHIP". The move is in response to a controversial vote that was cast at the ELCA's biennial convention last month. The effort to form an alternative fellowship is being organized by the group Lutheran Coalition for Reform, or Lutheran CORE. The group is holding a planning meeting in Indianapolis this weekend.

If your immune system is weakened, you may want to rethink that daily shower. New research suggests that ordinary showerheads are awash in germs, particularly a type that can cause lung disease in people whose immunity to illness is compromised. The germs could be "blasted out of the showerhead and inhaled by the person showering," said study co-author Leah M. Feazel, a researcher at the University of Colorado's department of molecular, cellular and developmental biology. But Feazel said showerheads shouldn't pose a threat to most people. And while the new findings do raise questions, it's not clear if showerheads are any more germ-friendly than other places around the house, such as faucets, counters and toilets, she said. The findings were published in this week's online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. http://www.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=630973

4/14 window… a possible new focus for Christian Missions? While the 10/40 paradigm refers to a geographical area (and home to largest population of non-Christians in the world), the 4/14 Window concerns itself with children and youth between the ages of four and 14 who are growing up outside of the church. Luis Bush, international facilitator of Transform World Connections, coined the term "10/40" window two decades ago to refer to regions of the eastern hemisphere located between 10 and 40 degrees north of the equator. Statistics show high percentages of teens and young adults ages 15 to 24 are departing from the Christian values they were raised with.
