Budget problems are spelling out higher costs for higher education in North Carolina. The UNC system is looking for ways to cut expenses while they await the final word on the Governor’s budget package next month. Schools in the system are asking for the maximum increase in tuitions next year…6 and a half percent, but they could still lose class sections, faculty positions, programs and services, as they’ve been told to prepare for budget reductions as much as 15 percent.  http://www.news-record.com/content/2011/01/28/article/nc_colleges_planning_for_15_cuts

Of course there’s evidence that texting while driving is dangerous…now lawmakers in two states are considering a ban on texting or listening to an ipod while jogging, walking or running. New York and Arkansas both want to outlaw the practice, citing a slight spike in pedestrian fatalities in early 2010 from the same period in 2009. A representative of the Governor’s Highway Safety board says pedestrians have to share some of the responsibility for their safety in traffic situations. http://www.wxii12.com/news/26597955/detail.html

As if tensions weren’t high enough in Egypt…there’s a new crisis looming…a food shortage. Families are running out of the basic staples of their diets, and many stores are either closing, or can’t get their shipments in. Protestors want President Mubarek to step down…he fired his whole cabinet over the weekend, announced a new one, but says he won’t resign, but promises to promote democracy. Americans trying to get out of the chaos are hitting plenty of roadblocks, including flight cancellations, a strict government curfew and a complete shutdown of the internet.  http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/01/30/egypt.protests.food/index.html?hpt=T2

It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since the tragic and shocking explosion of the Challenger Space Shuttle. Two people with North Carolina ties were among the seven passengers on board the shuttle when it exploded just over a minute after takeoff. Flags will fly at half staff today in memory of the lives lost that day.

Answered prayers finally for a bunch of out of work aircraft mechanics in the Triad. Governor Bev Perdue was here yesterday to help NS Aviation announce the plans for opening a new airplane maintenance operation. They’re getting 800 thousand dollars in incentives to bring their operation here, along with 308 jobs over the next four years, many of which will be filled by workers who were hung out to dry when Pace Airlines shut down last year. About 125 workers will be hired by the end of this year.

Nobody was hurt yesterday when a car slammed into a Winston Salem school bus. The bus was picking up students, and bound for Parkland high school, when the crash happened. Police said it wasn’t weather related, the driver of the car was just going too fast to stop.

Personal information for more than 18 thousand NC residents who received help for hearing or speech aids is now sitting in the landfill. How nice… the state dept of health and human services says some disks containing social security numbers, birthdates, income levels, etc was thrown out by mistake.

School officials in the eastern part of the state are trying to work something out with a fifth grader who was kicked out of class because of her wild hairstyle. 10 year old Jakyra Kearse showed up sporting a multi colored Mohawk with blue and red dyed braids. And before you say, where are the parents…you should know…Jakyra’s mom is the hairstylist. The school system in Edenton said her hair was a distraction to the other students, but they’re working to get her back into her classes.

Is the economy getting better? It depends on who you ask. A congressional study projects disaster for Social Security…going so far as to say it’ll run out of benefits by 2037. At the same time, an associated press survey of top economists found growing optimism—including a prediction that employers will hire more workers this year, although unemployment will likely stay at these high rates until around 2016.

Pink slips for about 1700 managers of North Carolina based Lowe’s Home Improvement, but it’ll open the door for other jobs. The company says it’ll start taking applications next week for eight to ten thousand weekend jobs

The NC DOT has unveiled maps that show proposed routes for Highway 109 between Old Greensboro Road and the Interstate 40 / Hwy 311 interchange. . They want to hear concerns of the public who may be affected by the changes. The first public meeting will be held tonight @ 7pm at Ledford Middle School .

A new sheriff in town. Yadkin County Sheriff Mike Cain resigned yesterday and pleaded guilty to nine misdemeanor charges, mostly using public resources for personal benefit. The county welcomes longtime resident William Ricky Oliver as the new sheriff…he was appointed just minutes after Cain’s resignation, and will finish out Cain’s four year term, which started in November.

If you still think Facebook is free, consider this new way they’re using you. There’s a new feature on the social networking site that will send an advertisement message to all your friends pages anytime you “like” a brand or check into a store. In a nutshell, it’s like a personal endorsement of a store or product, whether or not you actually recommend it, and here’s the annoying part…there’s no way to disable the feature.

The driver of a delivery truck fortunately wasn’t hurt yesterday when a chunk of concrete the size of a baseball broke off the new Bridford Parkway Bridge and smashed into his windshield. The DOT called it a freak accident, and the windshield will be repaired at the expense of the contractor. They’ve had other problems with this bridge under construction…they discovered last summer it had a two inch shortage on the clearance height.

A new study of the Gulf waters has raised concerns about the long term effects of the dispersants used to control the damage of the oil spill last spring. The full report is in the Environmental Science and technology journal. There’s evidence that much of the chemical stuff dropped in the water didn’t break apart as it should have. On the other side of the picture, the report says the dispersants did a good job of protecting the vulnerable marshes and wetlands.

Well now they’ve done it…they’ve changed the NASCAR points system to put a little more emphasis on winning races in the quest for the championship. Chairman Brian France says the system is easy to understand, and it changes the way it’s been done since 1975.

Terrie's News from Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Grayson County, Patrick County, Carroll County, Galax City schools are closed today due to wintry weather.

A Local woman had a prime seat for last night’s State of the Union address. Forsyth Tech biotech student Kathy Proctor was next to the first lady to hear President Obama’s call for America to focus on the technologies of the future. His address also included arguments against some of the corporate tax loopholes that help many companies avoid federal taxes altogether.

There was empty at the speech before congress last night…that of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Many Senators and Representatives wore a ribbon of support for their colleague, who was shot while speaking at a supermarket earlier this month. A bit of good news for her…doctors have upgraded her condition from serious to good, and she’ll be moved this morning to a rehabilitation facility in Houston.

Thomasville’s city manager is off the hook on charges of drug possession. 54 year old Kelly Craver was arrested first of the year, but after an investigation of the matter, a Davidson county judge said there wasn’t enough evidence to hold him guilty.

If you’re planning to watch the super bowl next weekend, here’s what you won’t see: cheerleaders. It’s a rare occurrence, but neither the Green Bay Packers nor the Pittsburgh Steelers have them. Probably because it’s always freezing during football season, and they can’t find enough crazy young women to wear short shorts on the field.

And a thumbs up from the Pope for Facebook…kind of. 83 year old Pope Benedict issued a message this week about the great opportunities available through media and social networks like Facebook, but he also warned that online friendships are no substitute for real human contact.

President Obama mentioned Forsyth Tech a couple of times last night in his State of the Union address, and biotech student Kathy Proctor was there, along with her twin daughters. She decided to get the high tech training at FTCC after losing her job in the furniture industry. The President spoke of the need for America to focus more on technologies of the future.

The Pope has officially condemned the suicide attack at Moscow’s airport this week. He sent word to Russia’s president, offering heartfelt condolences to the families of 35 people killed in the attack, believed to be the work of Islamic militants.

You’ll notice a change in food packaging in a few months…The White House, well…the first lady in particular…wants food makers to be more forthright about the nutritional value of their products, so a new program called Nutrition Keys will be showing up on the front of packages, including calories, saturated fats, sodium and sugars.

Toyota is recalling 1.7 million vehicles for defects that could cause fuel leakage…but, most of them are in Japan. The models in North America that are affected in the recall include Lexus IS and GS luxury cars.

A couple of NC companies have issued recalls of some products that may have been under your Christmas tree. Family Dollar stores sold imported remote controlled toy tanks between September and December…there’s a problem with the controller that could pose a burn hazard. And more than a thousand butterfly push toys sold at flea markets in North and South Carolina could come apart and cause choking or suffocation. If you have either of these items, return them to point of purchase for a refund.

Using social networking to grow closer to God? That’s the aim of a group called Christian Aid in the U.K. They’ve set up a twitter account called Count Your Blessings. It’ll kick off March 9th..Ash Wednesday…with daily reflections to help people look at the good things in their lives and respond through giving, reflection, action or prayer. Check it out at www.Christianaid.org.uk/lent.

The Tarheels might have a chance to play a really cool game next season.  It’s not set in stone yet, but details are being worked out for a game between UNC and Michigan State on board an aircraft carrier in San Diego on Veterans Day.

Dr King, a social conservative?
Dr. Alveda King, full-time Director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said today that advice columns written by her uncle for Ebony magazine in 1957-58 reveal a man who today would be regarded as a ‘social conservative’. "In advising men and women on questions of personal behavior 50 years ago, Uncle Martin sounded no different than a conservative Christian preacher does now," said Dr. King. "He was pro-life, pro-abstinence before marriage…and based his views…on the unchanging Word of the Bible. Today, Planned Parenthood would condemn Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as part of the ‘religious right.'"
