Breaking News: Mexico taking even more drastic action to stamp out a swine flu epidemic, ordering a halt to non-essential business and federal government activities, as the World Health Organization ratcheted up its pandemic alert, warning that "all of humanity" is threatened.
The Swine Flu has claimed only a confirmed eight lives in Mexico and one in the United States. Roughly 170 deaths are suspected of having been caused by the virus in Mexico. Switzerland and the Netherlands are the latest countries to report swine flu infections. European Union health ministers planned emergency talks in Luxembourg to coordinate national efforts in preventing the spread of swine flu in Europe.

Swine Flu vs Seasonal Flu
About 36,000 people in the U.S. die annually from seasonal influenza, and more than 200,000 are hospitalized, according to the CDC. But in the U.S., where most swine flu cases are mild, "it's a situation where we should be cautious but not panicky," said Susan Rehm, medical director for the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

Breaking News: According to the CDC, a 23-month-old Texas child confirmed as first U.S. swine flu death. www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/29/swine.flu/index.html

THE NUMBER OF CONFIRMED CASES OF SWINE FLU IN THE UNITED STATES IS UP TO 64. Nations around the world are taking measures to stop or slow the spread of the infection. In Mexico, the death toll has climbed to 159, with nearly 13,000 people hospitalized with swine flu-like symptoms. Besides the U.S. and Mexico, cases of the virus have also been confirmed in Israel, Spain, Costa Rica, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand. No Swine Flu cases have been reported in North Carolina.

An outbreak of swine flu that is suspected in more than 150 deaths in Mexico and has sickened dozens of people in the United States and elsewhere has grabbed the attention of a nervous public and of medical officials worried the strain will continue to mutate and spread. Experts are nervous that, as a new strain, the swine flu will be harder to stop because there aren't any vaccines to fight it. http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/28/regular.flu/index.html

To put things in perspective…since January, more than 13,000 people have died of complications from seasonal flu, according to the CDC in Atlanta weekly report on the causes of death in the nation. No fewer than 800 flu-related deaths were reported in any week between January 1 and April 18, the most recent week for which figures were available.

The National Religious Broadcasters are calling on Congress to reject a proposed federal 'Hate Crimes Bill'. The NRB says in its current form the bill threatens Christian communicators, broadcasters, Bible teachers, and everyday citizens. The legislation is known as the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 and is scheduled to be voted on in the House today. The NRB says the bill would add sexual orientation and so-called "gender identity" as new justification for federal prosecution.

LONGTIME REPUBLICAN SENATOR ARLEN SPECTER HAS SWITCHED HIS PARTY AFFILIATION AND IS NOW A DEMOCRAT. Specter's move puts Democrats just one seat away from holding a filibuster-proof majority of 60 members in the Senate. Specter was one of the most liberal Republicans in the U.S. Senate. The chairman of the Republican National Committee says Specter did not leave the GOP based on principles. Instead, says Michael Steele, Specter left the party because he knew he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his, quote, "left wing voting record."

THE U.S. SENATE HAS CONFIRMED KATHLEEN SEBELIUS AS THE NATION'S NEXT SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES. Sebelius leaves her role as Governor of Kansas to head HHS. They pointed to her liberal abortion-rights political record and her financial and political ties to late term abortion doctor George Tiller.

THE U.S. SUPREME COURT HAS RULED THAT THE FCC CAN FINE TELEVISION BROADCASTERS FOR THE AIRING OF SO-CALLED "FLEETING EXPLETIVES". At issue was a policy change the Federal Communications Commission made in 2004. The TV networks challenging the revised policy argued that the FCC created it without sufficient explanation. Previous FCC policy did not penalize broadcasters for the occasional airing of a foul word during a live program. The justices voted five to four in favor of allowing the FCC to impose the stricter standards.

The State House passing changes to spanking in public schools. School districts where corporal punishment is allowed would have to give parents the option of exempting their children from ‘spanking’. In the proposed Bill, school officials would be required to make a "reasonable attempt" to contact a parent before such punishment is administered. The measure now goes to the Senate. (From Thursday) On the second anniversary of the mass killings at Virginia Tech University, the families of two slain students are suing the state, the school and its counseling center, several top university officials and a local mental health agency, claiming gross negligence. Relatives of Julie Pryde and Erin Peterson are seeking damages of $10 million dollars. They were the only families who did not agree to an $11 million settlement with the state last June. BTW: 32 students plus the gunman died on April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech.

In the report, right-wing extremism was defined as hate-motivated groups and movements, such as hatred of certain religions, racial or ethnic groups. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano defended the report on Thursday, but she said the definition of right-wing extremism that was included in a footnote should be changed. www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/04/17/right-wing-extremism-report-issued-despite-objections/

President Obama: Respect My Pro-Life Convictions
I have strong convictions, but President Obama says that doesn’t matter. He’s ready to rescind the Conscience Clause. The Conscience Clause was implemented by George W. Bush (through Executive Order) to give physicians and nurses the choice to act according to their conscience — to not participate in abortion procedures if it conflicts with their personal convictions. President Obama is pushing to reverse the Conscience Clause, forcing pro-life doctors and nurses into performing abortion procedures, despite their individual beliefs.

The announcement was made Friday, March 6, 2009.
The public now has 30 days to file comments with the White House.
The date to ‘sign’ the petition is April 8, 2009.
