Americans United for Separation of Church and State is critical of the King City Council’s latest proposed to allow ‘religious flags’ including the Christian flag to fly at a Veteran’s Memorial in King.  A representative for AUSCS said that the town’s proposed policy “favors religion because the flags displayed at the memorial must be religious. The city cannot open a forum and limit it only to religious speech. Doing that clearly shows religious intent.” The Alliance Defense Fund, a conservative Christian organization, is assisting the city of King with the flag proposal.   The dispute began five months ago when a US Afghanistan war veteran complained about the Christian flag at the Veterans Memorial. In mid-August, the council received letters from the ACLU and the Americans United urging the council to remove the flag, saying that it violated the First Amendment. On Sept. 15, the council voted to take down the flag. www.journalnow.com/news/2010/nov/24/kings-flag-compromise-running-into-opposition-ar-563803/

The Christian Flag will once again fly at a Veterans Memorial in King? There were mixed emotions at last night’s King City Council meeting where a lawyer from the Alliance Defense Fund answered questions about the town’s new policy regarding which flags can fly at the city’s Veteran’s Memorial. The city council has come up with a plan that would allow veterans and their families to fly a flag (or no flag) for a 7 day period. The families will be chosen via a ‘lottery’. Flags flown must be approved by the Department of Veteran Affairs. The controversy concerning the flying of the Christian flag stems from a war veteran who complained that the flag didn't belong there. The Christian flag was removed from the Park back in September. www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-story-king-101122,0,7839894.story

The ET Commission to study UFO sightings in Denver ‘crash landed’ by voters last night. The measure to create a commission to deal with credible reports of extra-terrestrial activity in Denver has failed. Supporters of the ET Commission said it wouldn't cost taxpayers any money and would be funded through grants, gifts and donations. The commission would have been charged with dealing with credible UFO reports, listening to and documenting reporting of encounters and abductions, among other responsibilities. http://www.9news.com/rss/article.aspx?storyid=161385

The Tea Party making waves as well. Rand Paul, son of former presidential candidate Ron Paul cruised to victory in the Kentucky Senate race.

In North Carolina, history was made last night in Raleigh. Republicans now hold a majority of seats in both the state house and senate for the first time since the late 1800s.

Voters in Forsyth County voted in favor of a $40 million dollar library bond referendum that will mean new libraries in Clemmons, Kernersville and Winston-Salem, plus upgrades to branches in Forsyth County. The cost to the average homeowner in Forsyth: $12 dollars a year…

There's also a new sheriff in town in both Stokes and Wilkes counties.
Also, state voters overwhelmingly approved an amendment to the state constitution permanently barring convicted felons from running or serving as county sheriff in North Carolina.

This election you can participate in a first for North Carolina and the country; a statewide instant runoff election. Voters will select a first, second and third choice to fill a vacant seat on the state Court of Appeals. If no candidate gets the 50-percent plus one vote needed to win the seat, election officials will then tally up voters' second and third choices to get a winner. BTW: The Judicial candidates are non-partisan (meaning there is no party
affiliation listing on the ballot).

One politician’s attempt to show his support for U.S. troops backfired after his campaign flier mistakenly featured a photo portraying advancing German WWII soldiers. North Carolina ‘state legislator’ Tim Spear (D) apologized last week after his direct mail campaign sent out fliers showing four re-enactors dressed in German WWII combat uniforms. The text on the flier read: “In combat, you always want another soldier covering your back.” The North Carolina Democratic Party paid for the ad, and staffers approved the flier’s language. www.nypost.com/p/news/politics/us_politician_campaign_flier_backs_kHiq0uItZP1gzU76OP9mCM#ixzz1480gQfKw

The King City Council voted unanimously last night to pass a ‘limited public forum policy’ concerning the Christian flag issue at a Vet memorial in King. The Winston-Salem Journal reporting the policy would eventually let a Christian flag fly again at a Veteran’s Memorial at the city’s Central Park…as a part of a limited public display allowing other religious flags recognized by the U.S. military. Fox 8 news reporting that city officials in King will work out the policy’s details with their attorneys and specifics of the policy will be finalized by lawyers from the Alliance Defense Fund.

FYI: The dispute began this summer when a US veteran, who lives in King, complained about the Christian flag being flown at the memorial. In mid-August, the council and the city attorney received a letter from the On Sept. 15, the council voted 3-1 to take down the flag, on the advice of their city attorney after the ACLU threatened a lawsuit if the Christian flag wasn’t removed.

The Hickory Police Department said the artificial left leg found last week in western North Carolina does belong to Zahra Baker, the 10-year-old missing girl from Hickory. Police said the serial number on the leg matches Zahra’s medical records. Zahra lost one of her legs to bone cancer. Investigators continue to search the family's home in Hickory for additional evidence in the recovery of Zahra’s body.
