THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER HAS IDENTIFIED THE FIRST TROPICAL DEPRESSION OF THE ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON WHICH OFFICIALLY BEGINS MONDAY, JUNE 1st. Forecasters expect that Tropical Depression ONE, located about 260 miles southeast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, will dissipate by Saturday and never pose any threat to land.

A 13 year old from Kansas is the winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Kavya Shivashankar correctly spelled "Laodicean" which means ‘lukewarm or indifferent’ in religion or politics (as in the church of Laodicea in Revelation 3) Kavya taking home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes and, of course, the huge trophy. Western Wilkes County is under a Flash Flood Warning until 10:45am. Flash flooding caused by heavy rains yesterday forcing the evacuation of over two dozen people in the Moravian Falls Community in Wilkes County. 6 homes were destroyed in the flooding.

A Terror attack in Pakistan has claimed nearly two dozen lives this morning. Nearly 300 other people were wounded in today's attack on a police station in the city of Lahore.

The Triad is on the radar screen for yet another low-fare airline. JetAmerica is looking at PTI and possibly Smith Reynolds Airport as a stop. The startup airline, based in Clearwater, Florida, begins selling tickets today…with service expected to begin in mid-July. Several teachers at Oak Ridge Elementary school chose to teach their students outside yesterday. The reason: continued concern about air quality and mold inside the school. Something is making teachers and students sick. A proposal to cut the number of school days across the state was dropped in the State House. The proposed plan would have reduced the school calendar from 180 days to 175 next year and to 170 days in 2010-11 in an attempt to save over $300 million dollars. Instead of reducing the school calendar, lawmakers opted to raise annual tuition by $258 dollars for every student in the University of North Carolina system.

The 4-year-old daughter of former heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson has died after she was strangled by a cord connected to a treadmill. Exodus Tyson was unconscious when her 7-year-old brother discovered her at their Phoenix home on Monday. Heavy rain is causing severe flash flooding in southern Wilkes County this morning. Fox 8 News reporting that emergency Crews evacuated between 20 and 25 people from the Germantown Road area this morning in the Moravian Falls Community in Wilkes County. According to the National Weather Service, over 4 inches of rain has fallen over parts of Wilkes County in the past few hours. Additional rainfall is expected.

The Minnesota mom who was on the run with her 13 year old son after refusing chemo treatment has returned back home. The White House Commission on Remembrance is urging Americans to stop whatever they are doing at around 3 p.m. local time today to reflect ‘a minute’ on Memorial Day and honor those who have died in the cause of freedom.

Remembering a fallen soldier from Mt Airy that was serving in Iraq:
28 year old Lt. Leevi Barnard, of Mount Airy, was a member of the Army National Guard. Barnard was one of three soldiers from the 30th Heavy Brigade Combat that were fatally wounded last Thursday in Baghdad. He was a 1998 graduate of Patrick County High School and is survived by his parents, step-parents, three sisters and two brothers.

New this morning: The U.S. military says 3 soldiers have been killed and nine others wounded in a roadside bombing in southern Baghdad.

The New York City police commissioner saying that four men (who were arrested last night) wanted to commit ‘jihad’ when they plotted to bomb a Jewish temple and shoot down military planes in upstate New York. The arrests came after a year long undercover investigation.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in Federal court later today.

The U.S. Census Bureau is looking for a few good applicants just ahead of the 2010 Census to fill management positions in 10 local census offices scheduled to open this fall in North Carolina.
Pay for the census management jobs ranges from $17.00 to $33.50 per hour, depending on position and location. Winston-Salem, Asheboro and Hickory are some of the 10 cities.

Authorities nationwide are on the lookout for a mother and her 13-year-old son who have been refusing cancer treatment…that doctors say could save the boy's life. The teen, Daniel Hauser, has Hodgkin's lymphoma. The mother, Colleen Hauser and her son, Daniel, have vanished…apparently leaving their southern Minnesota home sometime after a doctor's appointment on Monday. An X-ray showed his tumor had grown. Daniel's Hodgkin's lymphoma is considered highly curable with chemotherapy and radiation, but the boy quit chemo after a single treatment. With his parents, he opted instead for "alternative medicines," citing religious beliefs.

Former TV anchor Tolly Carr is expected to be released from prison today, less than two years after he pleaded guilty to charges related to a fatal drunken-driving wreck that claimed the life of 26 year old Casey Bokhoven on March 11, 2007. Carr will be on a five year probation after his release, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and pay a $10,000 dollar fine to the public school system.

Guilford County Schools officials hope they have resolved mold issues at Oak Ridge Elementary School after students and faculty complained for nearly four years about respiratory problems and other health concerns. NORWICH, Conn. (AP) - Police arrested a 29-year-old man on car theft charges at a church on Sunday, the same church Police Capt. Timothy Menard attends regularly. Menard said that it seemed like every time the suspect needed gas, he stole a new car. Menard said the pastor of Norwich Alliance Church alerted him to the suspect's presence. The last filings in a lawsuit over public prayer at the start of Forsyth County Board of Commissioners meetings should be handed to federal court by next Monday. A ruling could come within the month. Edwards Elementary School in Havelock, North Carolina (on the coast) will close for a week because a student likely has the H1N1 or Swine Flu. (9am) Overturned tractor trailer is currently blocking most NB I-85 @ Highway 311
News 2 reporting that an early morning wreck is still causing some major delays in the Archdale area. Crews are expected to have the area cleared later this morning. Police say the truck left the road and the driver over-corrected, causing the truck to flip on its side. The driver of the truck was transported to High Point Regional Hospital with head injuries.

Longtime conservative New York congressman Jack Kemp passed away on Saturday after a short battle with cancer. Kemp was 73. Before entering politics, Kemp played professional football for 13 years with the San Diego Chargers and the Buffalo Bills. A MEMBER OF THE DALLAS COWBOYS' SCOUTING TEAM was seriously injured FOLLOWING THE COLLAPSE OF A TRAINING FACILITY OVER THE WEEKEND. The 80-foot tall structure came crashing down after high winds blew through the area on Saturday afternoon. In all, there were about 70 people inside the structure when it collapsed. The team’s 33-year old scouting assistant suffered a serious spinal cord injury which may leave him permanently paralyzed from the waist down.

The Twin City gets tough on pet waste: The city of Winston-Salem recently installed five "Scoop the Poop" stations in the downtown area. Each station has a sign printed with the city ordinance against leaving pet waste in public places. Leaving your pets' ‘waste’, in fact, against the law.
