The Dixie Classic Fair, part of the Winston-Salem Entertainment –Sports Complex,
runs through October 8th in Winston-Salem.

-Allow a little extra time for parking at the fairgrounds and Groves Stadium on Saturday afternoon around the Winston-Salem Entertainment – Sports Complex.
-The Dixie Classic Fair will be in full swing…plus Wake Forest has a home football game at Groves Stadium against Liberty Saturday afternoon.
Kick off will be around 3:30pm. Expect heavier traffic before and after the game.

Another laptop battery problem for Sony: IBM is the latest computer maker to recall laptop batteries made by Sony. Other companies that have similar Sony battery recalls…Dell, Apple and Toshiba..

Homeschooling has been outlawed in Germany. Based on a September 18th ruling…the European Court of Human Rights is upholding Germany’s right to send parents to prison for educating children at home for religious reasons.
The Alliance Defense Fund was supporting the homeschool parents in this case.

Americans seem to have lost their appetite for fad diets. A new national survey found that 69% of those surveyed are less likely to try a specialized or fad diet today compared to five years ago. Men are more skeptical of those fad diets than women.
Experts say that the best way to keep healthy…eat less and be active.

Student athletes are experiencing fewer sports-related injuries…while participation in HS sports has almost doubled over the past 10 years.
Some of the factors that have made High School sports safer: rule changes, improvements in protective gear and better diagnosis and treatment of injury
Of the nine popular High School sports…the injury rate was highest in football.

One High School football team in Michigan has NOT won a game, or even scored a point, in four games this season. Now, the school district has decided to cancel the rest of the season.
Despite pleas from players and parents, the School Board in the small northern Michigan district recently upheld the school's earlier decision to end the season…saying players for Os-coda Area High School football team risked injury in trying to take on much stronger opponents.
The scores in Oscoda's games this season were: 46-0…30-0…44-0…and 44-0.

7-Eleven stores will soon start taking down their CITGO signs:
A week after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez made some insulting remarks about President Bush during a speech at the UN, the convenience store chain saying that it will stop selling gasoline from Venezuelan-controlled Citgo Petroleum Corporation.
7-Eleven said in a statement it disapproved of Chavez' comments, but insisted that politics…not part of the decision to end its 20-year agreement with Citgo.
The decision to drop Citgo at 7-Eleven stores was made well before the UN speech from Chavez…but now was a convenient time for a press release.
7-Eleven will begin selling their own branded gasoline. (AP)

Details are emerging about the tragic death of a student taken hostage during an armed standoff in a high school classroom in Bailey, Colorado.
A mysterious gunman took six hostages before fatally wounding one student and then turning the gun on himself. Authorities still trying to figure out this tragic happening. The High School will be closed today. (AP)

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Ter-rell Owens is saying that a trip to the hospital was NOT tied to a rumored suicide attempt. Owens suffered a broken right hand a week ago…and that a reaction to pain medication sent his to the hospital. (ESPN + AP)

An unidentified motorist hit a 12-foot-long ‘American alligator’ on Highway 17 in Onslow County Monday night. The 85 years old gator weighed in at 475 pounds. Yeah…The reptiles live throughout the Southeast, and it's not uncommon for them to cross major roadways as part of their seasonal migration.

Research from the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse shows that teens who eat together with their family at least 5 times a week are less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol.

According to Nielsen Media Research, the average American home now has more television sets than people. Half of American homes have three or more TVs.
-In the average home, a television set is turned on for more than a third of the day — eight hours, 14 minutes,

Retail giant Wal-Mart will begin selling nearly 300 generic prescription drugs at greatly reduced rates…how about $4 dollars for a month’s supply. Walmart will test the generic prescription program first in Florida. (WS JOURNAL)

Local soldier pays the ultimate price: Army Specialist "Bobby" Callahan was fatally wounded while riding in a humvee Tuesday near Baghdad. Callahan age 22 attended Southwest Guilford High School until the 10th grade. He was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. He got married in January. (WXII + Fox News)

The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta saying that Americans between the ages of 13 and 64 should have an AIDS test during their annual doctor's visit. The CDC is hoping to Catch HIV Infections Earlier And Stop Spread Of the Virus. (CDC.GOV)

Investigators Spinach found in the refrigerator of a person sickened by E. coli was contaminated with the bacteria, the "smoking gun" that investigators have been looking for since the nation wide outbreak. 146 people have gotten sick…in 23 states…76 have been hospitalized.(AP)

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez used in his speech Wednesday at the UN to repeatedly call President Bush "the devil." A White House spokesman says the remarks aren't worthy of a response. (USA NEWS)

Three Indiana families have lost their newborns after they were accidentally given an adult sized dose of a blood thinner drug. Three other newborns are in intensive care. ((CBS NEWS)

The crew aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis landed safely at Kennedy Space Center in Florida this morning at 6:20. This was NASA’s first construction mission to the International Space Station since the 2003 Columbia disaster. (CNN / FOX)

Thursday will be the earliest ‘return’ for the Space Shuttle Atlantis…after a ‘UFO’ was spotted outside the space shuttle. The crew will be checking Atlantis to see if anything was damaged when a mysterious object floated off the orbiter yesterday. (AP)

Pope Benedict XVI (16) still doing some damage control…after his recent remarks against Islam citing a Medieval writing that said the some of Mohammad’s teachings are ‘evil and inhumane’.
The Pope said Wednesday that he has "deep respect" for Islam and hopes that his recent remarks that sparked anger from Muslims lead to dialogue among religions. (FOX NEWS)

Still a red light on the greens: Health officials are still searching spinach fields in California for the source of a massive outbreak of E. coli contamination.
-114 cases of E coli have been confirmed in 21 states.
Health officials are continuing to warn consumers not to eat any fresh spinach.
There is a recall of all bagged spinach by two California produce companies. (CNN)

About one-third of attention deficit cases among U.S. children may be linked with tobacco smoke before birth, or to lead exposure afterward, according to new research. The study is in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. (MSNBC.COM)

Missouri authorities still searching for the woman accused of slashing a mother's throat and kidnapping her newborn daughter. Little Abigale Lynn Woods has been missing since last Friday. She was a week old when she was abducted. The grandmother also said the family may have been targeted because a big sign had been up to welcome the baby home. (AP)

A judge has denied bail for the man accused of abducting and assaulting a 14 year old girl. The teen girl was held in an underground bunker for more than a week. The teen was able to text message her mom with her location. (WS JOURNAL)

Breaking News: Searchers Recover Bodies Of Missing Stokes County Brothers

Stokes County, NC -- After days of searching, emergency crews found the bodies of two Stokes County boys missing since Tuesday.

Shortly before noon, crews found the body of the 4-year-old, J.W., in the Dan River, near the Dodgetown area. They found another body about 100 yards away...they believe it is the body of J.W.'s brother Jacob
The Dodgetown area is just a few miles east of where the boys were last seen.

Still no sign of the two missing young boys last seen wandering away from their grandparent’s home on Hicks Farm Road near the Dan River in Stokes County. Fewer Americans are dying from cancer…while the rate of diagnosis remains about the same. The annual report on cancer from the American Cancer Society saying that progress is being made because of a reduction in tobacco consumption, improved treatments and improved detection. Interesting fact: Latino immigrants have lower rates of cancer than whites or blacks. This study will be published in the October 15 issue of Cancer.

Tropical Storm Florence is still churning in the Atlantic.
Good news: Florence has not strengthened over the past 24 hours but should reach ‘Hurricane’ status by the weekend. A direct east coast hit is not likely…high surf and beach erosion the only effects from Florence. (weather.com)

The launch of space shuttle Atlantis…Maybe, Friday?
If NASA determines by tonight what has caused a ‘short’ in one of shuttle’s fuel cells….the launch will be 11:40 a.m. Friday morning. (CNN)

A giant Panda cub has been born at The Zoo in Atlanta. The cub is about the size of a human hand. That’s only the fifth giant panda cub born in the United States since 1990. Only an estimated 1,600 giant pandas live in the wild now. The zoo says another 185 live in captivity.

WBFJ News Update

Authorities are still searching for two boys who were last seen wandering away from their grandparents on Hicks Farm Road near the Dan River in Stokes County.
The two boys JW and Jacob (ages 3 and 4) have been missing since Tuesday afternoon.
Anyone with information should call the Stokes County Sheriff’s Department at 336-593-8139.

Blood supplies are still at emergency levels.
Hurricane Ernesto forced the American Red Cross to cancel many of the blood drives that had been scheduled along the North Carolina coast over the weekend. Type O-negative, the universal blood type, is in great demand.
You can give blood every 56 days…if you are in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to schedule an appointment.

The latest named storm… Tropical Storm Florence is slowly gaining strength out in the Atlantic. Florence could become a Hurricane over the next couple of days. It’s still too early to tell if Florence will affect the US.

Many along the East Coast are still trying to recover from Tropical Storm Ernesto. -At least nine fatalities have been attributed to Ernesto.
-In Huntington, N.Y., a tree that is believed to be about 550 years old was weakened by the storm and fell Sunday. It was believed to be the oldest black oak in North America and once stood 90 feet high.
-Along our coast…
Numerous roads are still flooded east of I-95 including roads in Duplin, Jones and Sampson counties.
-About 140 people were evacuated in Duplin and Pender counties earlier in the week.
-The Cape Fear River should be back to its normal level by the end of the week.


NASA will postpone the launch of space shuttle Atlantis by another day after discovering problems with a fuel cell early this morning. Over the past two months weather has been a problem: Atlantis has been put on hold by a lightning strike in August and the threat of Tropical Storm Ernesto last week. (CNN)


In a surprise announcement…Bill Ford, the great grand-son of yes Henry Ford, is stepping down as the CEO of Ford Motor Company. A top executive at airplane maker Boeing will try to lead Ford (the nation’s #2 car maker) out of restructuring. (AP)

Good news… A new study from the University of California, Los Angeles shows that eating a salad a day will definitely help. Eating just one salad every day is associated with an increase in such vitamins as C, and E and folic acid that can boost overall health.

It’s a boy… Princess Kiko of Japan has given birth to a son. The baby is the royal family's first male heir to the throne in more than 40 years. In Japan, there is a long-running debate over whether Japanese law should be changed to allow women to succeed to the throne. (CNN)

Expect rain and lots of it…
Widespread heavy rainfall is expected across the Piedmont through tonight.
With the ground soaked from Tropical Storm Ernesto…most of Central North Carolina is or will be under a Flood Watch today.

-A Flood Watch is in effect through this evening for portions of Northwest North Carolina and southern Virginia…including Stokes, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin Counties.

-Flash Flood Watch is in effect from noon today through this Evening for …Forsyth, Davidson, Guilford and Randolph Counties.

Hurricane forecaster William Gray’s team at Colorado State University has downgraded its storm expectations for the 2006 Atlantic Hurricane season.
Only five hurricanes are predicted instead of the seven previously forecasted.
Two of the hurricanes predicted will be intense.
Last year, the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season set a record with 28 named storms and 15 hurricanes. (weather.com)
The next storm brewing in the Atlantic: Tropical Depression number Six is still disorganized but expected to strengthen over the next few days. #6 could be named Florence by the end of the week. (weather.com)

Assie Steve Irwin, better known as the Crocodile Hunter, was stabbed through the heart by a stingray on Monday and killed. Irwin was snorkeling in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef while filming a new TV program.
Police said there was nothing suspicious about Irwin’s death and no evidence he provoked the animal. An autopsy will be performed. Irwin, the director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland, was 44 and is survived by his wife and two young children. (cnn, msnbc, AP)

Drinking fruit or vegetable juice several times a week could help protect against Alzheimer's disease. According to a new 9-year study, people who drank fruit or vegetable juice more than 3 times a week cut their risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 76%. Tropical Storm Ernesto not causing any major problems in the Triad…

-Ernesto made landfall near Long Beach late last night with 70 mph winds…just under Category One Hurricane status.
-The National Weather Service saying that seven inches of rain was recorded in Onslow County. More than eight inches of rain has fallen in Wilmington

Iran defied a U.N. deadline yesterday saying that it would not be "bullied" into giving up the right to use nuclear technology. Thursday was the international deadline for Iran to stop enriching uranium. The fear is that Iran will use the uranium to develop nuclear weapons. (AP / USA radio news)

One analyst saying that gas prices should be closer to $2 than $3 come Thanksgiving. Triple A saying that gas prices will likely drop 10 cents a gallon after Labor Day. The nationwide average for gas is around $2.84.
