As many as 100 American missionaries, including seven missionaries from North Carolina, are trapped in the West African nation of Cameroon.
Anti-government riots have spread beyond the capital city making travel unsafe.
One of the local missionaries unable to leave Cameroon is Dr. Keith Phillips (with Phillips and Cuthrell…Winston-Salem Dentistry). North Carolina regulators decided yesterday to deny proposals by both Baptist Hospital and Forsyth Medical Center who are battling over who will build a new hospital either in Clemmons or 4 miles apart in Davie County. Both hospitals have until the end of March to appeal the rejection. (WXII, Journalnow.com)

Snow and wind for the Northern Mountains
-Heavy Snow Warning remains in effect through 6am Thursday morning

According to AAA of the Carolinas…you may be traveling over one of the worst bridges in North Carolina. Two bridges in Guilford County and one bridge in Winston-Salem have made the list of the worst bridges in our state. AAA of the Carolinas reporting that THE worst bridge in the Triad is located at the intersection of Business 40 and 85 (Spanning South Buffalo Creek) in Guilford County. That bridge was built in 1955. Traffic over that bridge is expected to decrease dramatically due to the opening last week of the Greensboro Western Urban Loop.

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook Great Britain early this morning …causing damage to buildings. At least one person was injured. The epicenter of the quake was located about 125 miles north of London.

An American aid worker who was kidnapped in Afghanistan is feared dead. 50-year old California native, Cyd Mizell taught English to high school students and job skills to women in Kandahar since 2005. The Asian Rural Life Development Foundation saying that Cyd and her Afghan driver were abducted in Kandahar on January 26th.

Power has been restored to most of the 3 million residents that were affected by the massive Black-out in South Florida yesterday. Authorities are trying to determine why an equipment failure and resulting fire at a power station led to the massive power outage. The power outage also led to an automatic shutdown of a major nuclear power plant

DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFULS HILLARY CLINTON AND BARACK OBAMA PARTICIPATED IN THEIR LAST DEBATE BEFORE NEXT TUESDAYS PRIMARIES IN FOUR STATES. Two of those states are delegate rich Texas and Ohio.

Starbucks Promises Customers Perfection A day after shutting down most of its U.S. shops for three hours to retrain baristas on espresso basics, Starbucks is welcoming customers back today with a new promise posted in stores: "Your drink should be perfect, every time. If not, let us know and we'll make it right."

A former postal worker and his wife have given $2.2 million dollars from their estate to establish the first endowed full-tuition scholarships at Guilford College. Recipients of the Frank and Eva Werner Scholarships will receive full tuition but students must maintain a 3.5 grade-point average. The first scholarships will be awarded during the 2008-09 academic year.
Frank Werner graduated from Guilford in 1934 with a bachelor's degree in economics. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years.
Ava Werner earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1933 and worked for Blue Bell for 17 years.

State transportation officials will hold meetings in two more downtown neighborhoods this week to tell residents about the results of surveys on the Business 40 upgrade project. Officials with the Department of Transportation will be on hand to show maps and answer questions.
Meetings will take place from 6 to 8pm this week for the following areas:
...Happy Hill and the N.C. School of the Arts tonight at the William C. Sims Senior Recreation Center.
...Goler, Crystal Towers, East Winston and Skyline Village on Thursday at the Rupert Bell Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1501 Mount Zion Place.
-Pollsters have been knocking on doors in 16 neighborhoods since late October asking residents for their opinions.
-The project will include repaving a 1.1 mile section of Business 40 that runs from just west of Fourth Street to east of Church Street after removing or replacing up to 11 bridges either on or over the highway.
-Engineers are considering completely closing the stretch for 2 years to rebuild it faster or keep it partially open during repairs for at least six years.

The 18th Annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting was held over the weekend. An American Airlines passenger struggling to breathe died after asking for assistance twice on a flight from Port-o-Prince, Haiti to New York on Friday.
Carine Desir asked for oxygen but an American Airlines’ flight attendant twice refused her request. Various medical devices on the plane failed, including two oxygen tanks that were found to be empty and what may have been a defibrillator that seemed to malfunction.

Local Pastor Wins State Volunteer Award

When Preacher Clyde Akers' Junior Sunday School teacher took him to Burger King 42 years ago he had no idea how much return he would get for the cost of a Whopper. That simple act of kindness to a 13-year-old growing up in a cash-strapped family of nine children sparked a care for others in Akers that continues to give to hundreds of people in Davidson County today. Now a minister at Freedom Baptist Church, Akers was one of 20 people statewide to be given the NC Medallion for Outstanding Volunteer Service earlier this month by Gov. Mike Easley."

LEXINGTON, Kentucky: A Danville family has received an $8,000 water bill for house they say they hasn’t been lived in for more than two years. The bill only covers 2 months. The normal water bill averages $10.00. The ground around the home isn't saturated and there are no apparent signs of a leak. A water company employee that the $8,000 bill was not a clerical error. PHOENIX A house cat who took a three-week cross-country ride to Arizona in a storage container will soon be heading back home to Florida. Arizona Humane Society officials say the 2-year-old gray cat crawled into a locker in Pompano Beach, Florida while a man loaded it for a move to Phoenix. The container spent time in a Florida warehouse and on a semi-trailer before being delivered to a Phoenix facility. A worker heard a cat meowing inside the container Tuesday. The cat, named Meatloaf, was hungry and thirsty but unharmed. The man who was moving remembered a similar cat near his old apartment. Meatloaf's owners had put up posters around their neighborhood. Since October, pollsters have been asking Forsyth County residents whether they would prefer a full Business 40 shutdown for two years or a partial closure for more than six years. The Department of Transportation (and its hired consultants) has tallied the results of an extensive survey on the best way to rebuild the stretch of Business 40 that runs through downtown Winston-Salem. More than 12,000 “votes” in 16 core neighborhoods saying overwhelmingly to shutdown Business 40 for two years. An estimated 70,000 vehicles travel Business 40 a day.

Even though we have gotten some rain lately, every county in North Carolina remains under a severe drought or worse. The U.S. Drought Monitor report released yesterday found that 46% of the state is under exceptional drought conditions - the most severe category. The worst drought conditions stretch across the middle of the state - from Rocky Mount to Asheville to Charlotte.The Pentagon saying that it was a direct hit. The Navy successfully taking out the ailing spy satellite last night …at about 133 miles above the Pacific Ocean.

Researchers from Wake Forest / Baptist Hospital finding that the standard test for measuring blood-sugar control in diabetes patients may not be accurate for those on the machine form of dialysis. The homoglobin A1C test did not provide a true glucose control in hemodialysis patiets. The research reported in the journal ‘Kidney International’.

The space shuttle Atlantis is back in Florida. The shuttle landed around 9:07 this morning at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Grab your telescope or binoculars: Check out a total lunar eclipse starting around 10pm tonight. Unlike solar eclipses which require protective eyewear, lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye. This will be the last total lunar eclipse until 2010. A lunar eclipse is when the moon passes through some part of Earth’s shadow.

The US Navy will attempt to shoot down a faulty spy satellite as soon as tonight. The U.S. Geological Survey issued a tsunami watch for the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

A school bus and several other vehicles crashed in Cottonwood, Minnesota on Tuesday, killing four students and injuring at least 14 others. The Flu season is at its peak. The Emergency Room at Forsyth Medical Center was slammed last week. Because of the extra traffic at the ER, Novant Health will extend the hours at its prime care on Highland Oaks Drive. The clinic will remain open until 11:30pm daily for the next 8 weeks.

FIDEL CASTRO IS STEPPING DOWN AS PRESIDENT OF CUBA. The surprise announcement came from Castro in the form of a letter published in the on-line version of a state run communist newspaper. Castro’s brother will continue day to day operations in Cuba.

The United States has officially recognized Kosovo as an independent nation. President Bush saying that Kosovo as an independent nation will bring peace to a region scarred by war.
-President Bush (and the First Lady) in Rwanda this morning. The president at the third stop of his five nation tour of Africa.
-Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice made a visit to Kenya yesterday to encourage stability after post election violence that has caused havoc in Kenya.

The battle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray disc technology is over. Toshiba said yesterday that it will no longer develop, make or market HD DVD players and recorders. Last month's decision by Warner Bros. Clarence and Mayme Vail celebrated their 83rd wedding anniversary on Sunday. The Minnesota couple could be heading for the Guiness Book of Records. One of their six children has filed the paperwork required by the Guiness record-keepers. Clarence is 101 and Mayme is 99.
The couple from White Bear Lake, Minnesota was married in 1925. They have six children, 39 grandchildren, 101 great-grandchildren, and 40 great-great-grandchildren.

Russian Space Cowboys…packing ‘Heat’? Russian Cosmonauts carry a gun on their Soyuz space capsule, which is attached to the International Space Station. Every spacecraft carries survival gear for crash landings…the Russian Soyuz has a kit that includes the gun. The gun is located in a survival kit between some seats aboard the Soyuz spacecraft. All the crewmembers know about it…and U.S. astronauts who fly aboard the Soyuz are trained to use it.
NASA and Russian officials won't talk publicly about it.
-A former NASA engineer (Jim Oberg), an author and journalist, who wrote about the gun on his Web site…said that a gun has no place in an environment where people are under such high stress.
"There have been cases of severe psychological strain on people in space, strain that they have taken out -- that their shipmates worried about the ultimate actions," Oberg said.

Banks and Post Offices are closed today

It’s the largest beef recall in US history: A meat packing company from California is recalling 143-million pounds of beef. The Agriculture Department says the recall covers raw and frozen beef products produced since February of 2006.

As many as nine tornadoes reportedly touched down across central Alabama yesterday. There were no reports of fatalities, but two people reportedly suffered serious injuries. Doctors say that she will remain hospitalized overnight as a precaution

Polls are now closed in Pakistan. Pakistan holding its first parliamentary elections in six years. Now, the counting begins.

Its Red and Black day on the campus of Virginia Tech today. Virginia Tech and the surrounding Blacksburg community are showing solidarity for the students, faculty and families of Northern Illinois University. NIU was the site of the latest deadly shooting that left 6 people dead last Thursday. Classes at NIU have been cancelled this week. Northern Illinois University is located about 75 miles west of Chicago.

-A candle light vigil tonight at 6:30pm in honor of the victims of the NIU shooting. The vigil will be held under Torgerson Bridge on the VT campus.
-Care Packages: Hokies United has decided to send care packages to NIU students, similar to the packages Virginia Tech received last spring. Items for the care packages will be collected Wednesday through Friday of this week. Those item include…letters of condolence and notes of encouragement, candy, small prepackaged snacks, water, soda, and other drinks.

A lot of senior citizens had a happier Valentine’s Day because of you. Over 51-hundred Valentine cards were collected during the WBFJ Sweetheart Surprise. Your cards were distributed by Sr Services (the folks that do Meals-on-Wheels) in Forsyth and Guilford Counties.

Many of the trailers used to house Gulf Coast victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita contain toxic levels of formaldehyde fumes. FEMA saying that people living in the government-issued trailers should be moved out as soon as possible.

Classes at Northern Illinois University have been cancelled today after a deadly shooting rampage that left 6 people dead on Thursday. Police have identified a former graduate student as the person that entered a lecture hall and shot 21 people before taking his own life.
Northern Illinois University is located about 75 miles west of Chicago.

Former Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney announced yesterday that he is endorsing Senator John McCain in his bid for the White House.Romney’s 286 delegates could put McCain close to the 11-hundred, 91 delegates needed to secure the Republican nomination.

Reynolda House Museum of American Art is excited about its latest exhibit that highlights art created by contemporary self-taught African American artists. “Ancestry and Innovation: African American Art from the American Folk Art Museum” runs through April 13th. Like a scene out of Star Wars? The U.S. military will attempt to shoot down a malfunctioning spy satellite within the next few days using a missile launched from a Navy ship. The satellite is projected to come down on its own in early March, but Pentagon officials are worried about what could happen to the toxic fuel supply if the satellite crashes to Earth.

Singer Sandi Patty will perform this Sunday on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition with Ty Pennington. The show will feature a family with a blind and disabled son who has overcome multiple challenges to achieve his goals as a musician. During the demolition part of the 2-hour program, Sandi Patty will sing a song from her latest CD while some of the cast members play instruments. Carrie Moore shares her story...

Union University (in Jackson, Tennessee) sustained heavy tornado damage on Tuesday evening, February 5 (around 7pm central time) when a line of heavy thunderstorms rolled through western Tennessee.

The WBFJ Morning Show talked with Carrie Moore a student from Union University that lived through a tornado that hit her school. Carrie graduated from Calvary Baptist Day School in Winston-Salem in 2007.


Pray for the families that are still cleaning up and for the recovery efforts in parts of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas that were hit by severe storms earlier this week.

Authorities issued a Silver Alert for a missing elderly man from Winston-Salem shortly after midnight Thursday. Charles Mitchell Guffey, 79, was last seen in Forsyth County at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. He was thought to be driving a tan, four-door 1997 Buick LeSabre, with N.C. license plate number VZF-1335. Authorities believe he might be traveling in or to Davie, Iredell, Stokes, Surry, Forsyth or Davidson counties.Guffey is described as a white man, standing 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 230 pounds. He was last seen wearing beige khaki pants, a brown long-sleeved T-shirt and beige lace-up shoes. Silver Alerts are issued when authorities believe a missing adult suffers from a cognitive impairment. Guffey has dementia, officials said. Anyone with information on Guffey's whereabouts is asked to call Winston-Salem police at 336-773-7700.

The Flu bug is still going around. Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro saw a record number of patients come through their emergency room Tuesday, prompting hospital officials to ask that people with flu symptoms not visit patients. State Health Director Leah Devlin saying that the flu is widespread across North Carolina.

The Clean Up from Tuesday night’s deadly tornadoes continues in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas...they were hardest hit by severe weather on Tuesday. The death toll stands at 55. President Bush is offering federal assistance.

A school resource officer used a Taser stun gun on a student at Northeast Guilford High School on Wednesday…after a 17 year old student refused a request to search him for weapons. Deputies said they found marijuana and a box cutter on the student. The Guilford County Sheriff's Department is still investigating the incident. (Fox 8)

Perry Manufacturing based in Mount Airy will lay-off 149 people. Most of the jobs are moving overseas. The company, which manufactures knit and woven clothing, was founded in Mount Airy in 1950. (WXII / Fox 8)

NASA may postpone the launch of space shuttle Atlantis because of the threat of bad weather. The scheduled 2:45 launch could be moved to Friday or Saturday. A deadly mix of painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping pills killed actor Heath Ledger. (CNN)

The Toxicology report lists six prescription medications that were found in the body of the 28-year-old actor. The Medical Examiner concluded that Ledger’s death was an accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription drugs. (CNN)

Former ABC Newsman John McWethy was killed in a Skiing Accident yesterday. The longtime national security correspondent with ABC died during a ski trip. He was 61. (Iron County, Utah) Miracle rescue...Thomas and Tamitha Garner were rescued yesterday by a snowplow driver who spotted them on a little-traveled canyon road near the Utah-Nevada state line. The couple had been missing for 12 days. The couple had taken a road trip to photograph wild horses. Their pickup got stuck in the snow on January 26. They ripped the cushions out of their Dodge Dakota and used them as snow shoes. Garner's father-in-law, Gerald, told reporters the family had been praying for divine intervention for days. "There's no word to describe it," he said. "I knelt down and thanked my father in heaven for the miracle he sent us."

A Lake Wind Advisory for most of the Piedmont and Foothills until 6pm.
Threat of severe weather possible for Western North Carolina, upstate South Carolina and much of northeast Georgia. Today: Windy with thunderstorms this afternoon.

Severe weather overnight in three southern states: Deadly tornadoes ripping through parts of Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. The death toll is up to 45. The National Weather Service received more than 300 reports of tornadoes, wind damage and hail on Tuesday.

As the dust settles on Super Tuesday: John McCain picked up projected wins and remains solid at the top of the GOP race for the White House. Mike Huckabee had a strong showing in the South. The presidential primary in North Carolina will be Tuesday, May 6. The North Carolina Democratic and Republican parties want a combined eight presidential candidates on the ballot for the state's May 6 primary elections.
The State Board of Elections will approve the candidate lists March 4. Some candidates could be removed if they drop out of the race.

The City Council in Raleigh will impose Stage 2 water restrictions beginning next week. Stage 2 water restrictions would ban pressure-washing and all remaining irrigation starting Friday, February 15.

A 9-month-old baby girl is alive after her parents threw her from a burning building into the arms of a police officer, four stories below. The girl's parents also survived the fire Sunday at a building in southwestern Germany. Nine people lost their lives in the blaze, including five children. LUDWIGSHAFEN, Germany

WHEATLAND, Wisconsin: Having a tornado demolish her home back in January was bad enough. But weeks later when Ann Beam received a $2,000 dollar bill from her cable company for destroyed equipment.
Time Warner Cable billed a number of Wheatland, Wisconsin residents for equipment damaged in the January 7 twister. Beam's bill covered five cable boxes and five remote controls.
She immediately called the cable company…a manager said that the bill stands and Ann will have to turn the bill into my insurance company.
The insurance company said that it would pay only a depreciated value of the equipment. A Time Warner Cable spokesperson said that the incident is just a simple mistake. (Aruba) Interesting update in the Natalee Holloway case: During a hidden-camera interview, Joran Van der Sloot (a prime suspect in the case) was recorded saying that (Natalee Holloway) the missing teenager was dead and that he had a friend dump her body at sea. The courts in Aruba will likely accept the video tape confession as evidence because it was recorded by a private citizen without any influence by authorities. Natalie Holloway has been missing since May 2005 while on a graduation trip to Aruba.

Authorities said skeletal remains found in western North Carolina over the weekend are those of missing hiker John Bryant. The body of 84-year-old Irene Bryant (John’s wife) was found in November. Authorities in North Carolina are looking at Gary Hilton as a suspect. Hilton pleaded guilty last week to murdering a female hiker in Georgia. (WXII)

Dawn Morgan will be installed as the first female Mayor in Kernersville on Tuesday. The Board of Alderman chose Morgan to replace Curtis Swisher who is stepping down to become the town manager of Kernersville.

A Greensboro man was fatally wounded yesterday afternoon when the small plane he was piloting hit an embankment and caught fire while taking off at the Elkin Municipal Airport. It is the second fatal plane crash in Surry County in three days. Six men flying from Georgia were killed on Friday when their plane crashed just east of the Mount Airy/Surry County Airport. The wreckage fell in a grassy area between two homes, in a neighborhood of at least 40 to 50 homes; however, no one on the ground was injured. A deadly bombing at a Jerusalem Café claiming 2 lives and wounding ten others. The Jerusalem Post reports that a number of Islamic groups have claimed responsibility for the suicide attack. It was the first such attack in Israel since January of 2007.
