The Northwest North Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross has been awarded a brand new 2008 H-3 Hummer. The GM Foundation donated the H3 last week. Officials saying that the new Hummer is a perfect addition to the disaster relief vehicle fleet because of its versatility. The foundation said it plans to donate 72 of the vehicles to Red Cross chapters nationwide by 2010, along with $600,000 to help pay for disaster relief efforts.

The Iowa Caucuses is set to be held this Thursday, January third.

Controversy still surrounds the assignation of Benazir Bhutto who was killed Thursday. Her 19 year old son has been named as the co-chair of the Pakistan Peoples Party. Upcoming elections in Pakistan on January 8th could be postponed.

If you make it to midnight, you probably will watch the Ball drop in Times Square.
The celebration of dropping a ball at the strike of midnight to ring in the New Year turns 100 this year. The world-famous glass ball has gone ‘green’ for 2008. Philips Lighting says that the lights are smaller but more than twice as bright as last year's lights. The ball has more than 9,000 energy-efficient bulbs that use about the same amount of electricity as 10 electric toasters. The new lights can create more than 16 million colors against the 672 Waterford Crystal triangles. The ‘ball’ was first dropped for the New Year's Eve celebration in 1907. A fire Wednesday morning damaged the Golden Corral restaurant on Garden Road in Burlington. Burlington firefighters got the blaze under control within an hour. The fire is still under investigation.

State transportation officials plan to decide in the next two weeks how to proceed with building a new bridge to Sunset Beach. Opponents believe the high-rise plan is overkill, and instead want a smaller structure similar to the bridge that crosses the Intracoastal Waterway near Wilmington.
The roughly mile-long bridge would replace an existing bridge that is more than 50 years old. The new bridge is expected to be complete in 2010.

THE SAN FRANCISCO ZOO WILL REMAIN CLOSED TODAY AS POLICE AND ZOO OFFICIALS CONTINUE THEIR INVESTIGATION INTO TUESDAY’S DEADLY TIGER ATTACK. One young man was killed and two others were seriously injured. The zoo says it expects to re-open tomorrow (Friday).

A COURT IN CHAD HAS FOUND SIX FRENCH AID WORKERS GUILTY OF TRYING TO KIDNAP AFRICAN CHILDREN AND TAKE THEM TO EUROPE FOR ADOPTION. The aid workers had claimed they thought the children were orphans from Sudan. The French defendants were sentenced to eight years of hard labor. In all, the aid workers were accused of attempting to kidnap one-hundred-and-three African children.

Do you have an extra Bible or Bible reference books just lying around collecting dust? Christian Resources International has launched the ‘Operation Bare Your Bookshelf’ campaign. The ministry says that the need for Bibles is great. About 250 requests a month from pastors and volunteers in developing countries request resources.
The resources include Bibles, concordances, basic reference and study materials, and other Christian books. Men who drink five or more cups of green tea a day may reduce their risk of advanced prostate cancer by about half according to a Japanese study.

Wal-Mart is donating gift cards to the Salvation Army in eight communities across the nation. Those eight communities include Anchorage, Alaska; Ashland, Ohio; Benton Harbor, Michigan. Camden, New Jersey; Detroit, Michigan; Knoxville, Tennessee; Portland, Oregon; and the northern West Virginia Panhandle. The gift cards totaling $200,000 dollars will help underprivileged families across the country to purchase toys, clothing, food and other items this Christmas.

Fourteen African countries may be on the verge of the worst meningitis outbreak in a decade. The first indications of an epidemic could appear in February or March. Red Cross officials saying that meningitis is one of the most feared epidemic diseases in Africa…because of its rapid onset, high fatality rates. Many survivors face long term effects of brain damage and deafness.

After two months of record demand, Crisis Control Ministry of Forsyth County is in emergency mode…and asking for help so they can continue to help others. One of only three known remaining US World War I veterans has died. J. Russell Coffey passed away yesterday at the age of 109. He had been living in a nursing home in North Baltimore, Ohio. The Veterans Affairs Department says that Coffey enlisted in the Army in October 1918 while a student at Ohio State University. http://www.wtol.com/global/story.asp?s=7528767

State Bank & Trust in Fargo, North Dakota is giving its full-time employees $1,000 dollars each and part-time employees $500 dollars each. With one condition -- use the money for people in need. All part a half a million dollar "Pay it Forward" initiative by the bank. Employees were told not to use the money for themselves. The bank asked each employee to document the good deed with a video camera. The deadline is June 30. A school bus driver and a student were taken to High Point Regional Hospital yesterday afternoon after a tractor-trailer ran a stoplight and struck their bus, which sent the bus into a telephone pole. The accident happened at the intersection of Fairfield Road and Baker Road in High Point. Greensboro police cancelled an Amber Alert late yesterday morning after7 month old Brionna Michelle Johnson was turned over to authorities. Greensboro police said that the girl’s father (Quito Johnson) violated a domestic order and took the child. The dad turned himself into police around noon on Wednesday.

Four members of a family in Northern California who ventured out into the woods in search of a Christmas tree on Sunday have been rescued. The dad (Frederick Dominguez) and his three children were spotted by a California Highway Patrol helicopter yesterday afternoon. The dad was waving to the helicopter, and used twigs to spell out the word help. All four were taken to the hospital…treated and released.

An Army veteran gives the Salvation Army in Philadelphia a sizable gift. An Army vet who remembered getting free coffee and doughnuts some 40 years ago from the Salvation Army gave a bell ringer at a red kettle a $10,ooo dollar check. A spokesperson for the Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia recognized the name on the check. The man has donated before and wishes to remain anonymous.

When it comes to their phones, Americans are cutting the cord. This year is likely to be the first calendar year in which U.S households spent more on cell phone services than on land line phones. Five people have died while trying to shovel snow over the weekend in Detroit. Doctors say that back strain is usually the biggest problem associated with shoveling snow.

Prosecutors in Aruba have dismissed the case against the three main suspects in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The Alabama teen disappeared while on a graduation trip to Aruba two and a half years ago. Her body was never found.

A teenager whose appendix ruptured while she was on a cruise ship, hundreds of miles from help, received an unusual rescue over the weekend. An SOS call was answered by the US Navy. Crews aboard the USS Ronald Reagan airlifted 14 year old Laura Montero from the Dawn Princess cruise ship to the aircraft carrier for emergency surgery. Laura is expected to make a full recovery and should be back home by Christmas.

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake rattled Alaska's Aleutian Islands overnight. The Aleutian Islands are a chain of more than 300 islands that extend southwestward from Alaska into the northern Pacific Ocean.

A 710-year-old copy of the English law document known as the Magna Carta was auctioned off for $21.3 million dollars. WINTER OFFICIALLY BEGINS THIS SATURDAY (December 22nd)

Turkish troops have crossed into Northern Iraq. Al Jazeera TV reporting that about three hundred troops from Turkey entered Kurdish territory earlier today. Two days after launching Air strikes against Kurdish rebels in Northern Iraq.

A new portion of the Western Urban Loop in Greensboro opens this morning. The new four mile section runs north and south between Bryan Blvd and I-40. The southern bypass was completed in 2004.

The state's drought will cost North Carolina's agriculture economy $573 million dollars in 2007. The study, released by Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, finding that soybean farmers have been hit the hardest. http://www.wxii12.com/news/14873218/detail.html

More Americans are doing ‘the Google’ about themselves?
In that latest report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project:
-47% of U.S. adult Internet users have looked for information about themselves through Google or another search engine.
-Americans under 50 and those with more education and income were more likely to self-Google.
-53% of adult Internet users admit to looking up information about someone else (excluding celebrities).

Better late than never? OBERLIN, Kansas (AP) - A postcard featuring a color drawing of Santa Claus and a young girl just arrived in northwest Kansas…a little late. It was mailed back in 1914. The Christmas card was dated December 23, 1914, and mailed to Ethel Martin of Oberlin, Kansas, apparently from her cousins in Nebraska.
The post office in Oberlin wanted to get the card to Ethel Martin. But, Ms Martin has past on…so the 93 year old card ended up with Bernice Martin, Ethel's sister-in-law.
The card was placed inside another envelope with modern postage for the trip to Oberlin - the one-cent postage of the early 20th century wouldn't have covered it, Martin said. WINTER OFFICIALLY BEGINS THIS Saturday (December 22nd). A major Winter Storm dumped snow and ice from Maine to Michigan over the weekend. The storm is blamed for at least six deaths.

The US Postal Service saying that today will be the busiest day of the year. On average, the Postal Service processes over 650 million pieces of mail…today it will be closer to 900 million pieces of mail. Wednesday will be the biggest delivery day.

His hits included "Leader of the Band" and "Same Old Lang Syne"…Singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg died Sunday at his home in Maine. He was 56. Fogelberg was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer back in 2004. http://www.danfogelberg.com/news.html

Bah-Humbug? Greensboro Police arresting 19-year-old Kevin Michael Feeley in connection with the vandalism of an outdoor Nativity scene at Greensboro College. The Nativity was vandalized back on December 8th. Feeley is a student at UNC-Greensboro and charged with injury to personal property.

The Pioneer Family Restaurant in Archdale had their outdoor Christmas decorations stolen last week. Owners of the restaurant put up a message for the thieves… “May God Bless whoever stole our Christmas lights.” The stolen decorations were worth a couple hundred dollars.

A cream made with caffeine may make women's thighs slimmer.According to a report in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Brazilian researchers studied 99 women treated with a cream consisting mostly of a 7 percent caffeine solution. The women used the cream twice daily for 30 days. When the researchers took their subjects' measurements at the end of the study, more than 80 percent of the women had a reduction in the circumference of their upper and lower thighs. Nearly 68 percent also reduced their hip measurements.

A major winter storm leaving snow and ice from Indiana to Maine. Close to a foot of snow has blanketed the Northeast. Winter Storm Watches will likely be in effect through the weekend. Freezing rain is in the forecast for parts of Pennsylvania, New York and southern New England. WINTER OFFICIALLY BEGIN on DECEMBER 22nd.

A teenage girl and her younger brother were attacked by two rottweilers while they were waiting for the bus yesterday morning on Conrad Street in Lexington. Both were taken to High Point Regional Hospital and treated for cuts and bruises. Both were treated and released. The rottweilers were seized and are being checked for rabies. Police have charged the owner with violating a county ordinance for dangerous dogs.

Walkertown Elementary School was briefly locked down on Thursday after a ‘hunter’ was spotted near the school's property. The man, who was carrying a gun, was not breaking any laws. Officials put the school into lock down mode as a precaution. The hunter was never on school property.

New Jersey lawmakers have voted to abolish the death penalty. New Jersey’s governor saying that he will sign the bill into law…making New Jersey the first state in more than 40 years to outlaw capital punishment.

TROPICAL STORM OLGA IS BLAMED FOR FLOODING THAT CLAIMED NEARLY TWO DOZEN LIVES IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.

VALLEY VIEW, Ohio (AP) –An Ohio mayor will marry couples for FREE…but donations accepted? Mayor Randall Westfall's e-mail reference to FREE weddings with a donation to his campaign landed him in trouble on Tuesday. A "Mystery Santa" has been approaching perfect strangers and handing out the cards and cash at local businesses over the past few weeks. The Winter Storm that has shut down portions of 5 states in the mid-west is now over New England. Heavy snow warnings have been posted from southern New York and northeastern Pennsylvania to much of Southern New England. Accumulations may be in the 5 to 10-inch range.

North Carolina facing the worst drought in the state's recorded history. Governor Easley is warning people across the state if they don't take water conservation seriously…that he will. Easley said he would use his emergency powers to place a limit on the daily amount of water some communities could use.

Merck & Company has recalled 1.2 million doses of the Type B Hib vaccine, a common childhood vaccine, due to potential contamination during the manufacturing process. Officials with Merck claim that the recalled vaccine does not pose a health threat.
The Type B Hib vaccine is recommended for all children under 5 (and usually given in a three-shot series, starting at 2 months of age.)

So, what is your cholesterol level? The National Center for Health Statistics has found that the average total cholesterol level among American adults is in the ‘ideal range’ for the first time since 1960.The average Cholesterol level in 2006 was 199. A level of 200 or less is desirable.

A former Triad middle school teacher indicted last April on sex offenses pleaded guilty to all charges Wednesday in a Forsyth County courtroom. Robert Watson was sentenced to 15 to 19 years in prison for numerous counts of taking indecent liberties with teenage students in 2005 while he was a teacher a Clemmons Middle School.

A FEDERAL STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED FOR OKLAHOMA TO HELP IN THE CLEAN UP FROM THE RECENT ICE STORMS. Hundreds of thousands of people remain without power in Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois because of those ice storms. Many residents have been told they should plan on being without power for several days.

The driver of a tractor-trailer that overturned near King yesterday morning simply fell asleep at the wheel. The chain reaction accident blocked the southbound lanes of US 52 for hours. Police have charged the driver of the big rig with careless and reckless driving, and failure to wear a seat belt. The right lane of SB 52 at Meadowbrook Road will be closed for most of the day…crews will be doing some additional clean up after yesterday’s accident.

Longtime "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek was hospitalized yesterday after a minor heart attack. Trebek, 67, was admitted to the hospital late Monday night.

In Las Vegas: Six young people were shot after they got off their school bus on Tuesday. Two of the teens were listed in critical condition. The shootings resulted after a fight earlier in the day over a girl.

Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings are in place for parts of the Caribbean. The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Olga could dump heavy rains on parts of Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.

Up, Up and Away: On Nov. 30, hundreds of students at a school in Salt Lake City stood on their ball field, below clusters of balloons as they celebrated the life of their English teacher, Stephanie Bernritter, who recently died of leukemia. "The balloons were still full of air," said Michael Beadle, who recently discovered them while deer hunting near Onaka, South Dakota. Just keeping his options open: Guilford County Schools' superintendent Dr. Terry Grier is among the candidates under consideration for the superintendent's position of the San Diego, California Unified School District. On Tuesday, Nov. 8, Grier was named the 2008 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year by the NC Association of School Administrators. Guilford County Schools is the third largest public school system in North Carolina. The Board expects to name a new superintendent on December 18.

Up-Date: NEWS 2 reporting that a school bus rolled over at the intersection of Groometown Road and Brandy Road this morning.
There were six children from Southern Elementary on the bus when it happened.
Troopers say the driver and some of the children were injured. The children have only minor injuries. The bus driver was ejected and suffered critical injuries.

Police in Colorado are still investigating two shootings that happened about 65 miles apart on Sunday…but could they be related? The first attack took place early Sunday morning at a Youth With a Mission facility near Denver. About twelve hours later a gunman opened fire in the parking lot of New Life Church in Colorado Springs, as people were leaving services at the mega church. Nationally known pastor Jack Hayford was the guest speaker at New Life Church yesterday (Sunday). New Life is the church from which Ted Haggard stepped down as pastor amid scandal last year.

Pro-Life and Pro-Family groups are mourning the passing of former Congressman Henry Hyde. The 83-year old Illinois Republican was well known as one of the strongest pro-life voices in Congress before his retirement last year.

Wake Forest University is getting an early Christmas gift. $7 million dollars has been donated from the estate of Dr. Ralph Wingate Bland. He practiced medicine in Goldsboro for 33 years before his death last year. The gift will be evenly divided between Wake Forest's School of Law and the School of Medicine. The money will support scholarships in both schools beginning in the fall of 2008.

A PASSENGER JET HAS CRASHED IN CENTERLTURKEY. There were 56 passengers and crew on board. Looks like there are no survivors.

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake shaking the Caribbean yesterday. The island of Martinique was reportedly the hardest hit. Injuries reported.

Story out of Sudan…Fifteen days in jail: That’s the sentence handed down to the British teacher who allowed her elementary students to name a classroom Teddy Bear…Mohammad. The teacher was convicted of insulting Islam, whose founding prophet was named Mohammad. She will reportedly be deported from Sudan after she has served her jail time.54-year old Gillian Gibbons could have received 40 lashes.

North Carolina’s original copy of the Bill of Rights will be on display at the Greensboro Historical Museum this weekend only. The 218-year-old document left the state in 1865. It was bought and sold among collectors, and finally returned to the state two years ago after an elaborate undercover FBI sting in 2003. Admission is free…but limited.

A BRITISH TEACHER HAS BEEN ARRESTED IN SUDAN FOR ALLOWING HER ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TO NAME A TEDDY BEAR…MOHAMMAD. As part of a class project, the 54-year old woman asked her class of 7 year old students to come up with a name for their classroom teddy bear. The class agreed on ‘Mohammad’. The teacher was later arrested and accused of insulting Muslims. The BBC reports that if she is convicted, the teacher could face a jail sentence and 40 lashes.

The Guilford County Health Department has reported the county’s 21st case of rabies for the year. A stray cat found on the Lindley Park walking Trail in southwest Greensboro tested positive for rabies on Tuesday.

The strike by stagehands in New York City is over. A tentative agreement between producers and striking stagehands was announced late last night. Shows are set to re-open this evening. The strike that lasted 19 days shut down 26 of the 35 theater productions in the city.

THE BOARD OF REGENTS FOR ORAL ROBERTS UNIVERSITY IS IN THE PROCESS OF SELECTING A NEW PRESIDENT. Richard Roberts, the son of founder Oral Roberts, resigned as the university’s President last Friday. School officials are investigating accusations that Roberts misspent school funds to support a lavish lifestyle.

A Judge in Niagara Falls (New York) is in some hot water for ordering everyone in his courtroom to be put in jail because of a ringing cell phone. The Niagara Gazette saying that the judge ordered all 46 people that were in his courtroom to jail after he was unable to determine the source of what was believed to be a ringing cell phone. Some spent several hours behind bars before being released. The judge has apologized.

Beginning Saturday, December 1st, a new law goes into effect that limits a defendant's ability to ask for a "prayer for judgment" after he or she has pled guilty to speeding more than 25 miles per hour over the speed limit. A prayer for judgment is a punishment that allows a driver to keep their license without accumulating points on their license or insurance.-The new law also prevents a defendant from using an "improper equipment plea" if they are caught driving faster than 25 mph over the limit.

More than 50,000 motorists were ticketed during Operation Slow Down…the statewide crackdown on speeders by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Of those citations, over 24,000 were ticketed for speeding. (Close to 1,000 people were ticketed for DWI).

Nissan is recalling some 650,000 Altima and Sentra passenger cars in the US to fix problems with a sensor that could lead to the engine stalling. The recall affects Nissan Altimas and Sentras model years…2002 plus 2005-2006 model years equipped with a 2.5 liter engine. Contrary to common belief, American children may be quite happy to eat nutritious meals at school. A University of Minnesota study found that school lunch sales do not decline when children are offered healthier lunches. The researchers also concluded that more nutritious lunches don't necessarily increase costs for schools, either. UPDATE: Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died after being shot in the leg during an apparent home invasion early Monday morning. Low self-esteem in youngsters can increase their desire for consumer goods… So says a new study from the marketing department at the University of Minnesota. Materialism increases from age 8 or 9 to age 12 or 13, but then decreases by the time children are ages 16 to 18. The level of materialism in teens is directly driven by self-esteem. When kids were asked ‘what makes them happy’: Kids aged 12 to 13…money and brand-name clothing.

Beauty queen Ingrid Marie Rivera beat 29 rivals (including pranks and a bomb threat) to become Puerto Rico’s 2008 Miss Universe contestant over the weekend. Beauty pageant organizers are still investigating who doused a contestant's evening gowns with pepper spray and spiked her makeup, causing her to break out in hives. Rivera was composed while appearing before cameras and judges throughout the competition. But once backstage, she had to apply ice bags to her face and body, which swelled and broke out in hives twice.
She thought at first it was an allergic reaction, or maybe nerves…
Rivera's clothing and makeup later tested positive for pepper spray.
Rivera's bag containing clothes, makeup, credit cards were stolen during the competition.

Record gasoline prices not stopping millions from traveling over Thanksgiving. Triple A is estimating that nearly 39 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more from home over the next five days. Roughly 80% of those trips will be by car.

Scientists have created the equivalent of embryonic stem cells from ordinary cells…a breakthrough that could someday produce new treatments for various diseases…without first creating or destroying human embryos for the purpose of gathering embryonic stem cells.
Results published in the journal Science and Cell.

World Vision is asking for immediate donations: World Vision just one of many Christian Relief organizations working to supply emergency food and supplies to thousands of families in Bangladesh. Millions of people have been left homeless after a deadly Cyclone hit the southern region of Bangladesh. The death toll is currently at 35-hundred, many others are still missing.

The AIDS epidemic is still a major problem but…the United Nations has altered its assessment of the global AIDS epidemic…citing various reporting problems. Last year the U.N. estimated that the number of people infected with AIDS worldwide exceeded 40-million; the new estimate is now reported at 33-million.

The White House announcing an overdue Mideast Peace Conference starting next week in Annapolis, Maryland. Nearly 50 countries and organizations will be gathering. Of those, 20 Arab nations including Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Iraq.

Wake Forest University will be one of two backup sites for the presidential debates next year. The 2008 primary debate sites are the University of Mississippi, Belmont University (in Nashville, Tenn) and Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. Wake Forest hosted presidential debates in 1988 and 2000.

The Price of gas will stay around the $3 dollar range or higher through Christmas. Gas prices up 13 cents over the past 2 weeks.

The Winston-Salem City Council will discuss opening up more beds for the homeless at its meeting tonight. Back in February, the city council adopted a 100 bed limit for homeless shelters.

A 17 year old Central Davidson student and her boyfriend are in custody in connection with the stabbing death of Judith Maxwell…the girl’s mother. The Maxwell family lives in the Cotton Grove community near Lexington.

The death toll is close to three-thousand and could grow in the aftermath of last week’s cyclone in southern Bangladesh. The US is sending 2 Navy ships with 35-tons of food and supplies to help in the disaster.

Based on annual FBI crime stats…Detroit has been named the nation’s most dangerous city. St. Louis, Flint, Michigan, Oakland, California and Camden, N.J.round out the Top 5. Mission Viejo, California was ranked the safest.

American Music Awards: Casting Crowns taking home a statue last night. Carrie Underwood and Daughtry taking home 3 awards each.

TV lawyer Nancy Grace has been released from the hospital after complications from child birth. The 48-year-old Cable TV host delivered twins back on November 4th but wound up in the hospital herself after doctors discovered 2 blood clots in her lungs. Nancy delivered twins (a daughter and son) who arrived two months ahead of schedule and are still hospitalized.
Blood clots are a danger to any pregnant woman, but especially in middle aged women.

Nancy Grace is certainly not the only high-profile woman over 40 to have her own baby in recent years. Oscar winner Geena Davis had twin boys at age 47, and Elizabeth Edwards delivered her son Jack at age 50.

The Alliance Defense Fund reporting that a judge in Florida will allow
Gideons to once again distribute Bibles on public property near a public school in Key Largo. An official ruling on the case is pending.

A student at UNCG has been hospitalized with a contagious blood infection. Of the 300 students who attended classes with the infected student, more than 100 students were given antibiotics as a precaution. The infected student is recovering. The Guilford County Health Department saying that the infection is only spread through close contact of 1 to 3 feet, for more than 30 minutes.

Baseball star Barry Bonds may be on his to prison instead of the Hall of Fame. The five count indictment coming down after his testimony in a federal investigation into the use of steroids by professional athletes.

With the busiest flying time of the year approaching, President Bush putting pressure on the airline industry to be on time…or else. A powerful yet deadly cyclone has made landfall on the southern shore of Bangladesh. At least 500 people have lost their lives.

North Carolina-based Missions ministry JAARS has been given a high flying gift. A turbo-prop, ten passenger airplane was recently donated by Marhsall Carter (the chairman of the New York Stock Exchange). Officials with JAARS saying that the new plane is perfect for the short runways in Indonesia. JAARS serves the spiritual, physical, and social needs of people around the world including Bible translation.

A pastor from New Mexico is camping out on the roof of a Chick-Fil-A restaurant in Albuquerque for a good cause. Dr. Michael Hattabaugh is up on the roof to raise money and awareness for the (quote) millions of children who need a roof over their heads. The goal of the ‘Get Mike Down’ campaign is two-hundred-thousand dollars.Half of the money raised will go to provide housing for children facing long-term care at an Albuquerque hospital, the other half will go to help AIDS orphans in Africa.

The actors who played the Munchkins in the 1939 film classic, "The Wizard of Oz," are finally getting a ‘star’ on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.There are only nine actors of the 125-member Munchkins cast still alive.

Starting today, Lexington Memorial Hospital is going smoke-free. To help employees stop smoking, the hospital plans to provide them with a three-month supply of nicotine patches and free classes designed to help them quit.

Clean up continues from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Northern Chile yesterday. The quake caused structural damage in several northern cities. Two deaths were reported.

Another OJ Trial? This time the trial will be in Las Vegas. OJ Simpson and two co-defendants face 12 charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery. Simpson is accused of stealing sports memorabilia from a dealer at a Las Vegas hotel. Simpson says it was his stuff.

Gas prices will likely go up another 20 cents a gallon over the next few weeks. Triple-A reporting that the national average is $3.10 a gallon.

Delegates to the Baptist State Convention have voted to expel a Charlotte church for promoting the homosexual lifestyle. In a ruling that was passed last year…any Baptist church that affirms or endorses homosexual behavior would be expelled from the Baptist State Convention. Officials with Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte were on hand to state their case at yesterday’s opening session in Greensboro.

It’s back to the real thing: The City of Winston-Salem has dropped the ‘Holiday poll’ and will go back to a more traditional ‘live tree’ this Christmas. For the past three years, a tree-shaped light display has been used instead of a live tree…saving the city 18,000 but it never caught on with the public.

The power of waste? Surry and Wilkes counties are being considered for the site of a power plant that makes electricity from burning chicken waste. British-based Fibrowatt is considering the two counties for a new plant. The plant could add 100 jobs to the local economy. A public hearing is scheduled for today from 4-7 p.m. at the Walker Center on the Wilkes Community College campus.

The Tuesday morning fire at Jones Elementary School in Greensboro is now being ruled as arson. A third-grade classroom trailer was damaged in the fire.

A 10-year-old boy who admitted starting one of the Southern California wild fires last month will not be charged. Police saying that there was no evidence of intent by the boy who accidentally started a fire while playing with matches.

The search for a missing elderly couple in the Pisgah National Forest is now a homicide investigation. According to the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office, someone was caught on a surveillance camera trying to use the missing couple's ATM card in Polk County, Tennessee…the day after a 911 call was attempted from their phone. Polk County is about 75 miles away from Pisgah National Forest, in the corner of Tennessee near the borders of North Carolina and Georgia. The Bryants, who were married more than 50 years, were avid hikers.

New York Governor Elliot Spitzer is withdrawing a controversial plan to provide drivers licenses to illegal immigrants in parts of New York state. On the West Coast, officials in San Francisco will issue identification cards to city residents, regardless of whether they are in the country legally or not.

The judge who lost a $54 million dollar lawsuit against his dry cleaner over a pair of missing pants has now lost his job. Roy Pearson was one of 30 judges who worked in the Office of Administrative Hearings in Washington, DC. The Governor of Georgia will be among those praying for rain on the steps of the state capitol today. Much of Georgia is in the midst of a drought. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Governor Sonny Purdue stating that the state needs rain, he recognizes that the government can’t make it rain, so he is making the request to a higher power.

Hundreds of people are involved in the clean-up of last week’s oil spill in San Francisco Bay. Workers are washing the oil off of birds that got caught in the spill. About four-hundred birds have been killed another 500 are being cared for.

Winston-Salem police are investigating the death of an 8-year-old child found in a home on 21st Street early yesterday morning. Autopsy results are pending.
