A U.S. Marine in Iraq has been removed from duty after complaints from Iraqis that he was handing out coins with Bible verses. A North Carolina A&T football player died after collapsing during a workout on campus. 22 year old Chad Wiley of Black Mountain, N.C., was taken to Moses Cone Hospital on Tuesday where he later died from complications related to heat illness. The university is providing counseling for students on campus.
Officials said he had just completed a 45-minute weight-lifting session when he and other teammates went outside into the 80-degree temperatures for a conditioning session.

A new "Choose Life" license plate has gained approved by the state House Transportation Committee. The bill now goes to the House Finance Committee.To be created, the Pro-Life license plate must be requested by 300 people. Proceeds from the additional $25 dollar fee for the ‘Choose Life’ plate would go to a special fund to benefit crisis pregnancy centers around the state.

Pro lifers in South Carolina are celebrating a new bill that goes into effect today. The bill allows women considering an abortion to see an ultrasound of their unborn baby.
Joan Hope (the founder of the Kernersville Little Theater) passed away on Monday. Joan had been battling cancer. A funeral is set for Friday at 4pm at St Matthews Episcopal Church. Joan was 79.

Dr. Michael J. Easley, the President of Moody Bible College, is stepping down at the end of the month because of health reasons.Easley underwent back surgery in November and has since had difficulty traveling…and just day to day activity is difficult.

The Forsyth County Public Library Central Branch has been doing some Spring cleaning. Roughly 2,000 magazines will be on sale starting today for members of the Friends of the Central Library between 4-6pm. The magazine sale is open to the public on Friday and Saturday.

Outgoing Winston-Salem police chief Pat Norris will be the next head of public safety at Winston-Salem State University. Norris replaces Willie Bell who is retiring June 30th.

For almost 60 years, Dianne Odell lived inside a 7-foot-long metal tube, unable to breathe outside it but determined not to let it destroy her spirit. But on Wednesday, Odell passed away when a power failure shut off electricity to the tube and stopped the pump drawing air into her lungs.
Dianne, age 61, lived in an iron lung after contracting polio at age 3.
From her 750-pound iron lung, she got a high school diploma, took college courses and wrote a children's book about a "wishing star" named Blinky.

Cartoonist Dick Sutcliffe, who created the stop action 1960s ‘claymation’ series "Davey & Goliath" passed away earlier this month in Dallas. Sutcliffe, age 90, died May 11 after suffering a stroke.
Sutcliffe, a Lutheran minister's son and former newspaper reporter, created the idea for the "Davey and Goliath" cartoons in the late 1950s while working as a radio programmer for the Lutheran Church.

So why all the tornadoes? Weather experts can’t explain it. The year is not even half over, but 2008 is already the deadliest since 1998 when you are talking tornado deaths. Over the weekend, tornadoes ripping through Parkersburg, Iowa destroying over 280 homes. (AP CNN)

Frightened but not hurt: A tree fell on a minivan at the intersection of Stratford Road and Robinhood Road yesterday afternoon in Winston-Salem. Elizabeth Kester (the driver of the minivan) first thought that she had been rear-ended…but looked back and saw tree limbs. The tree also knocked out power to streetlights in the area. The US military saying that newly diagnosed cases of Post-tramatic Stress Disorder among US troops sent to the Middle East jumped 50% last year. Troops with the Marines and Army, the forces bearing the brunt of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, were most affected.

The man who is best known to millions for his whistle (on the Andy Griffith Show) has passed away. Earle H. Hagen died Monday night at his home in California. He was 88. Hagen composed the original music for more than 3,000 TV episodes, pilots and TV movies. TV Themes to Hagen’s credit: The Mod Squad, I Spy and the Dick Van Dyke Show.
FYI: The theme song for the Andy Griffith Show was titled "The Fishing Hole". Lyrics for the song were written by Everett Sloane but the producers decided that whistling the tune set the tone for the show, so the words were dropped.

Maria, the youngest daughter of Steven Curtis Chapman and wife Mary Beth who was accidentally struck and killed by an SUV in the driveway of the family’s home near Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday afternoon.

Burma’s military leaders have agreed to "allow all aid workers" into the country to help storm survivors. Aid groups have criticized the country for not accepting help after the cyclone hit three weeks ago. An estimated 130,000 people have lost their lives with 2 million left homeless.

Hundreds of children taken from a Polygamist Sect in west Texas could be reunited with their parents soon. An appeals court in Austin ruling that Texas state workers improperly removed 440 children after an allegation of child abuse.

If all goes well, NASA’s Phoenix Lander spacecraft will touch down on Mars sometime Sunday night. The probe’s mission is to search for signs of water and other evidence that life might have once existed on Mars.

Ford Motor Company is cutting production of its pickups and SUV’s. The company saying that car buyers are wanting more fuel-efficient vehicles as gasoline prices continue to rise.

Our prayers are with the Steven Curtis Chapman family this morning:
Maria Sue Chapman, the youngest daughter of Steven Curtis Chapman and wife Mary Beth was accidentally hit by an SUV driven by her teenage brother in the driveway of the family’s home near Nashville, Tennessee yesterday afternoon. Several family members witnessed the accident. Police reports say that Maria was rushed to the hospital but died of her injuries.
-Steven and Mary Beth have promoted international adoption through Shaohannah’s Hope.
Maria (age 5) was one of three adopted daughters from China. The Chapman family has 3 biological children as well. Maria had just graduated from the church preschool.

Crude oil prices have hit a new record high…$130 dollars a barrel. Oil futures are now selling for about twice what they were just a year ago. Gasoline prices also moving up: The national average for regular unleaded is $3.80 a gallon. (AAA)

Starting early next year, Japanese automaker Honda will start selling a new, improved and affordable gas-electric hybrid in the U.S. Honda leaning on new "green" cars, especially hybrids, for sales over the next three years.

Leaders in Burma is still refusing to allow US naval ships to deliver emergency aid. The oppressive military government fears that the US wants to overthrow the country's government and seize its oil.

Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Usual course of treatment includes radiation and chemotherapy The diagnosis comes after the 76-year-old Democratic senator suffered a seizure over the weekend.

Due to rising labor and food prices…Members of the School Nutrition Association of North Carolina (the lobbing group for public school cafeteria workers) are requesting $20 million dollars (or about 25 cents per meal) to meet new nutritional standards required under state law. Elementary schools have been given until June 2009 to implement the healthier standards.

His 4 year old son was asleep in the backseat with his legs tucked up in the car seat. EMS workers said if the boy's legs had been dangling, the beam would have likely cut them off. How high is too high? The city of Canton, Ohio wants to keep lawns manicured legally. The Canton City Council wants to beef up its existing high-grass and weeds law by making a second offense a fourth-degree misdemeanor (punishable by a fine of up to $250 and up to 30 days in jail). In the spring and summer, it's not uncommon for council members to field complaints from residents about overgrown lots owned by individuals or banks and corporations that ignore the law and notices in the mail. According to city law…Grass higher than 8 inches is a no-no.
First-time violators now face a minor misdemeanor, which carries up to a $150 fine and no jail time.

An alarming 70% of Americans now believe that divorce is morally acceptable. That’s according to a recent poll by Gallup’s 2008 Values and Beliefs survey. While the recent poll reveals a steady rise in the acceptability of divorce, more than 70% of Americans continued to rate suicide, cloning humans, polygamy, and adultery as morally unacceptable.

Tragic accident in Tyro: Brandon Craver, a senior at West Davidson High School, was killed late Sunday night in a motorcycle accident on Swicegood Road. Two of six suspects charged in connection with the shooting of a Triad convenience store clerk last October will face the death penalty. No more steroid testing of student athletes in Winston-Salem / Forsyth County school system. The Federal grant that paid for the steroid testing will run out at the end of the school year. Good news: no students tested positive for steroids over two and a half years. (WS Journal)

Greensboro police are investigating a robbery that happened in broad daylight Saturday afternoon. According to police, a man was walking down Phillips Avenue near Woodbriar Street when three men approached him. One of the suspects struck him in the head, while another suspect cut him before taking his wallet. The victim was taken to Moses Cone Hospital for treatment. (Fox8 news)

China has begun three days of national mourning for the victims of last week’s 7.9 magnitude earthquake. 158 relief workers in China have been buried by a mud slide while repairing roads damaged by last week’s quake. The official death toll is now more than 32 thousand, but is expected to surpass 50 thousand. CNN

Willing and waiting in Burma: Relief ships from the US and France are in the area loaded with much needed supplies, but Burma’s military leaders are still refusing to allow the cargo into the country. The UN Secretary General will travel to Burma on Wednesday.

The California Supreme Court ruling that a law defining marriage as the union between one man and one woman is “unconstitutional,” allowing same-sex couples to marry within the next 30 days. The ruling struck down Proposition 22, a voter-approved statute protecting traditional marriage. This week is National Bike to Work Week. The goal of the week is to get Americans out of their cars and to promote exercise and clean air. According to the EPA, driving a car is the single most polluting thing most Americans do.

Rescue efforts are slow after Monday quake in China: Chinese authorities are concerned that the number of fatalities (now over 15 thousand) could skyrocket unless more help arrives soon. 10 million people in southwestern China have been affected by the 7.9 magnitude earthquake on Monday. RESCUE OPERATIONS CONTINUE IN SOUTHWESTERN CHINA. RELIEF SUPPLIES ARE TRICKLING INTO THE HARDEST HIT AREA. The 7.9 magnitude quake has claimed at least 20 thousand lives.

A relief team from Samaritan’s Purse (including Franklin Graham) were in Beijing, China and felt the 7.9 quake that hit 900 miles away on Monday. The WBFJ West Yadkin Yankees played the Jonesville Blue Jays last night.
The game was tied 3-3 until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Blue Jays broke the game open with four runs and went on to defeat the WY Yankees 9-4. In a losing effort, Dylan Mathis led the Yankees with a double and a triple. He also scored a run. Also contributing was Joshua Christy with a double; he also scored two of the four runs. Bronze flower containers disappearing from cemeteries. In the past three days, the Rockingham County sheriff's department said three different cemeteries have reported missing bronze flower vases. The value of the stolen all-bronze vases is about $29,000 dollars. (Fox8)

With Primaries in North Carolina and Indiana, Tuesday may go down as one of the most dramatic voting days in North Carolina. Lots of national attention on the Democratic presidential race. The ballot contains the races for governor among other things. Polls open at 6:30am (until 7:30pm) on Tuesday.

The cost of a first-class stamp will increase to 42 cents starting next Monday, May 12. According to the U.S. Postal Service, the Forever stamp will go up at the same time. However, the Forever stamps can still be purchased this week for 41 cents and can be used as first-class postage even after the rate increase takes effect next Monday.
