New York City's Tompkins Square Park will be the host of the Unemployment Olympics this afternoon. 26 year old Nick Goddard, a laid-off computer programmer, is the brainchild of the event. The Unemployment Olympics will feature 40 unemployed "athletes" participating in events such as the Fax Machine Toss, the "You're Fired" race and Pin the Blame on the Bosses.

Update: During a LIVE news conference, Carthage Police Chief Chris McKenzie said that investigators are still working to uncover the motives of 45-year-old Robert Stewart for a rampage that claimed the lives of seven residents and a nurse at the Pinelake Health and Rehab center on Sunday.
Stewart was stopped by a single shot to the chest fired by a Carthage police officer responding to a 911 call. The rampage ended when 25-year-old Officer Justin Garner wounded Stewart in a hallway. Garner was wounded in the leg.
Court records said Stewart is not scheduled to appear in court until next week on eight counts of first-degree murder and a charge of felony assault of a law enforcement officer.

Police still searching for answers…after a shooting rampage at a nursing home yesterday morning in Carthage, North Carolina. 45-year-old Robert Stewart fatally shot 8 people (7 residents and a nurse) at the nursing home. Carthage is 70 miles south of Greensboro in Moore County. A news conference has been scheduled at 10am this morning.

Weary residents of Fargo, North Dakota attending church services Sunday morning to count their blessings that the Red River finally stopped rising and praying that the levees will continue to hold. The Red River continues to slowly recede after cresting on Saturday…at just over 40 feet. Now, the residents of Fargo are bracing for a winter storm that’s expected to bring a half-foot of snow. On Friday…‘late term abortion’ doctor George Tiller was found not guilty of violating late-term abortion laws in Kansas. A jury acquitted Tiller of all 19 counts against him. Shortly after the verdict was read, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts is proceeding with a disciplinary petition against Tiller that could result in the suspension or revocation of his license, as well as fines, and other limitations upon his practice. Of the 1.3 million legally blind people in the US…fewer than 10% actually read Braille. Also, just 10% of blind children are learning Braille…that’s according to the National Federation of the Blind. At the height of its use in the 1950s, more than half the nation's blind children were learning Braille. Today Braille is considered by many to be too difficult, too outdated, a last resort. Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong is recovering after surgery to stabilize a broken collarbone. Armstrong crashed in the first stage of a race in northern Spain on Monday. Surgeons inserted a stainless steel plate and 12 screws to stabilize the broken collarbone. After taking a few days off, Armstrong will be allowed to ride a stationary bike. Armstrong plans to ride in the upcoming Tour de France this July.

Prayer lawsuit in Forsyth County could be coming to an end. Prayers offered to a specific deity to start county commissioner meetings is at the heart of a lawsuit against Forsyth County. The lawsuit has dragged on since 2006. A judge could rule on the lawsuit next month. The ACLU took the case on behalf of two county residents. The Alliance Defense Fund is defending the county against the lawsuit at no charge.

A plan for dividing the Guilford County school district into four regions will get more attention before the Board of Education on Thursday. Superintendent “Mo” Green’s plan is similar to one he helped develop in Charlotte. Two Russian military planes ‘buzzing’ a little too close to U.S. Navy ships in the Sea of Japan earlier in the week. The ships were participated in a joint military exercise with South Korea. A spider that was found in a Tulsa, Oklahoma grocery store may not have been as deadly as originally thought. The spider found in a shipment of bananas at Whole Foods was taken Sunday to the University of Tulsa, where animal facilities manager Terry Childs identified it as a Brazilian wandering spider, considered one of the most lethal in the world.

Nearly 3,000 students faced suspension last fall for not having the Tdap vaccination on file at school, as required by a recently enacted state law. Officials with the Guilford County Schools are trying to get the word out early for the 2009-10 year in hopes of avoiding mass suspensions because of the vaccination. Parents need to provide proof their child has received the shot by the first day of school Aug. 25.

One more day of much needed rain. The sun should be out on Tuesday.

New food label policy begins today. Labels on most fresh meats, along with some fruits, vegetables and other foods, will now list where the food originated. In the case of meats, the new labels will list where the animal was born, raised and slaughtered. The new policy was written by the Bush administration.

Fire Ants first appeared in Winston-Salem as early as the late '80s and early '90s on Hanes Mall Boulevard near Circuit City. The new process allows drivers to go to their local DMV to take the necessary tests, have their photo taken and pay the application fee. THE WIFE OF STRYPER CO-FOUNDER MICHAEL SWEET LOSES HER BATTLE WITH CANCER.
Kyle Rae Sweet passed away last Thursday evening after being diagnosed with cancer back in February of 2007. A statement released on Michael Sweet's and Stryper's websites says Kyle is, quote, "now at peace with her Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ." The same statement goes on to say that Kyle's life was dedicated to caring for her husband and home-schooling their two children. A fund has been established to receive donations for the children's college education.

The investigation continues in the shooting death of a pastor in Maryville, Illinois. Pastor Fred Winters was shot and killed during the 8am early service yesterday morning. One fatality and three others hurt yesterday after a head-on collision in Mount Airy. Highway Patrol troopers saying that Laura Seal collided with a pickup truck yesterday afternoon on Quaker Road in the Flat Rock community of Mount Airy.
