_______________I’m Verne…Here’s what’s happening @ WBFJ:
DATE: Friday July 28, 2006

With temperatures in the low 90’s…add in the humidity…it will feel like 100 degrees today.
-A Heat Index over 100 can pose a health risk to the elderly, children and anyone working or exercising outside.
-Please limit your time outdoors today.
-If you have to be outside: take frequent breaks in the shade or inside in the air condition. Remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Relief from the heat is on the way: At least 98 deaths being attributed to the heat wave that has gripped California since July 16.
Some relief may be on the way. The National Weather Service said temperatures in most parts of California are expected to drop below 100 by this weekend.

Four people (including an unborn child) were fatally wounded in the head-on collision early yesterday morning on Highway 109 near South Davidson High School. Funeral arrangements are pending.

A 26-year-old Davidson County woman is in serious condition after being was attacked by two pit bull dogs on Thursday. Police in Lexington said they found Kelly Lynn Bell lying in a ditch with several severe dog bites on her body. She was taken to Wake Forest / Baptist Medical Center for surgery. Authorities are holding the dogs while they investigate the incident.

The latest from the Middle East:
The fighting continues between Israel and Hezbollah militants.
Up to 15,000 Israeli Reserveists are waiting orders to be called up to support Israeli troops already on the ground.

Tour de France winner American Floyd Landis is under suspision…
Cycling's world governing body told the US Team yesterday that Landis had tested positive for high levels of testosterone during the Tour de France.
If Landis is found guilty of doping, he could be stripped of his title.

Four leaders in China's underground Protestant church have been sentenced to two years in a Chinese Labor Camp.
The four were sentenced to "re-education through labor"…after appealing to officers for the release of 14 congregants seized in a raid on a non-sanctioned church service that morning. Chinese law permits police to pass sentences of up to three years in labor camps without trial.

Pounding the pavement is getting a little easier on people's knees in many cities around the country. Dozens of communities are turning to rubberized sidewalks made of ground-up tires. The rubber sidewalk squares are up to three times more expensive than concrete slabs. But sidewalks made of rubber…last longer, because tree roots and freezing weather won't crack them. http://www.rubbersidewalks.com
