Three year old Claire Harris is now helping with the relief efforts in Japan…one magnet at a time. Claire, the adopted daughter of Pastor Ken Harris and wife Kim of Arcadia, saw the news about the Japanese earthquake and tsunami on television two weeks ago. And, she saw people who ‘looked’ like her. (Claire’s birth mother was a Japanese student in the US). At first, Claire wanted to travel to Japan to help, but was told by her parents that it was too far away for a 3-year-old to travel. So Claire and her parents and Claire's great-aunt, Linda Minnich of Pottsville, Pa., came up with the idea of making and selling magnets with a cherry blossom design and the words "Pray for Japan."
You can purchase one of Claire’s magnets for a donation of a dollar, with the money going to missions (ear-marked for Japan).  Want a magnet? Contact the Harris family: kwharris@ugbconline.com

Researchers at A&T State University in Greensboro have developed what they are calling a hypo-allergenic peanut. The breakthrough reduces the top two allergens in peanuts. The new hypo-allergenic peanut will not cure peanut allergies, but will lower the severity of it in some people. At least 75 percent of allergic reactions to peanuts come from accidental exposure. More than 3 million people suffer from peanut allergies.

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center will hold a news conference at 10am this morning to announce a new name and unveil a new hospital logo. So, what would you name ‘Baptist Hospital’??

THE NEW HAMPSHIRE SUPREME COURT RULED WEDNESDAY IN FAVOR OF A DIVORCED FATHER WHO WANTED HIS PREVIOUSLY HOMESCHOOLED DAUGHTER ENROLLED IN PUBLIC SCHOOL.  The Court stated that it was NOT giving an opinion as to which form of education (whether public, private or homeschooling) is "most suitable" for children.  The case was taken to court because of the two parents, who share joint legal custody of their daughter, their failure to agree on how she should be educated. The court also recognized that fit parents have a fundamental right to direct the education and upbringing of their children. www.hslda.org/hs/state/nh/201103160.asp

The US House of Representatives is expected to vote on a bill today that would strip $50 million dollars of Federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which helps support NPR. The move to pull funds from the NPR comes after a conservative activist group secretly taped an NPR executive criticizing Tea Party supporters, conservative Republicans and Evangelical Christians, while boasting that NPR would be better off without federal money. Check out the video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd9OYJMX9t4

The measure is part of a larger bill to keep the government running for the next three weeks. BTW: NPR says federal funding comprises less than 2 percent of its budget, with most of its financial support coming from station fees, sponsorships and grants.

-Freezing temperatures and snow are compounding the horrible situation. Japanese media said more than 20,000 people are known to be trapped and awaiting rescue. Members of a U.S. rescue team working in one coastal city said Thursday that they have not found anyone alive in the area that they are working. www.voanews.com/english/news/asia/east-pacific/Japanese-Shelters-Reported-Short-of-Food-and-Water-118156934.html-Crews are using military helicopters to dump tons of sea water on top of one of the reactors at the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in order to stop a full meltdown. The "No Speak English, No Service" sign has been taken down from the main entrance of Reedy Creek Family Diner in Davidson…but not without controversy. About a month ago Greg Simons, the owner of Reedy Creek Family Diner, posted the "No Speak English, No Service" sign after a ‘communication break-down’ between he and a group of Spanish speaking customers about a month ago. Earlier this week, Simons took down the sign from his restaurant after being bombarded with complaints. Simons believes people are taking his sign out of context, making a racial issue out of something he says is merely a communication issue. http://www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-story-no-english-no-service-110315,0,3204540.story

Comedian Gilbert Gottfried has been fired as the abrasive duck voice on the AFLAC commercials…after posting a string of mocking jokes about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan on Twitter over the weekend.   Gottfried’s tasteless tweets could be damaging to Aflac’s image in Japan, because the company does 75% of its business in Japan. One in four homes in Japan buys health insurance from Aflac.  Aflac announced before the incident that it would donate $1.2 million dollars to the International Red Cross to help with disaster assistance in Japan. FYI: Gottfried’s voice is NOT the voice of the Aflac in Japan. Instead, the Aflac duck voice has a softer, sweeter voice in Japanese commercials. A talent search is underway for Gottfried’s replacement. www.wxii12.com/entertainment/27193109/detail.html

March Madness…are you ready?  According to a report from outplacement company Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., an estimated 8.4 million work hours will be lost to ‘March Madness’ (during the annual three-week long NCAA tournament).  According to a CareerBuilder survey of more than 3,900 workers…one in five workers said they have participated in March Madness pools at work. (28% of male workers and 11% of female workers said they have put money down after filling out their tournament brackets).
FYI: ‘March Madness’ will cost US offices an estimated $192 million dollars.

Countless fans, and even people who aren't big basketball fans, are filling out their brackets. But, could your office ‘tournament pool’ be illegal?  If money is involved with the winning, technically…YES.  The NC statute states, in part, "...any person or organization that operates any game of chance or any person who plays at or bets on any game of chance at which money, property, or other thing of value is bet... shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor."   A detective with the Guilford County Sheriff's Office said while they're not sending investigators out to offices looking for people participating in pools, she recommends using common sense. Don't go bragging about how much money you're putting in or winning on social media. http://www.digtriad.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=166395&catid=57

A massive multi-nationally ‘search and rescue’ operation is underway in northern Japan. Japanese officials are calling Friday’s devastating 8.9 magnitude earthquake and Tsunami that followed, the ‘most severe crisis’ since World War II. Powerful aftershocks are continuing in northern Japan.
Happening NOW: A second hydrogen explosion in three days at a nuclear power plant in northern Japan damaged in the quake, rocked a 25 mile radius earlier today, sending a massive cloud of smoke into the air. 11 workers were injured. The plant's operator said the radiation levels at the affected unit were still within legal limits. Thousands have been evacuated away from the nuclear reactor. The official death toll will climb into the thousands. http://www.cnn.com/
