High Point officials announced yesterday they are lifting the mandatory water restrictions imposed on October 22, but voluntary restrictions remain in place.
Armed robberies are hitting record highs in Greensboro. Back in October 2006, police reported 16 armed robberies. So far in October 2007, the number has more than doubled to 36. Four businesses along East Market Street in Greensboro were robbed over the weekend.

THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA WAS SHAKEN BY A 5.6 magnitude EARTHQUAKE OVERNIGHT. There are no reports of serious damage or injuries.

The National Hurricane Center is urging residents in southern Florida to continue watching the progress of Tropical Storm Noel. Storm warnings are still in effect for the Bahamas and Cuba in the Caribbean.

The Los Angeles Times reporting that a boy has admitted to police that he started one of the wildfires in Southern California…while he was playing with some matches. There’s no word yet whether charges will be filed.The LA sheriff’s office has not released the boy’s age…only identifying him as a juvenile. Five wildfires are not fully contained.

Singer / actor Robert Goulet passed away on Tuesday. He was 73.
Goulet was on the waiting list for a lung transplant.

The former manager of the New York Yankees Joe Torre may soon be moving west to LA. ‘Unspecified sources’ saying that Torre has agreed to a three-year…$14.5 million dollar deal to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Hanesbrands Incorporated (the makers of Hanes and Champion brand clothing) has signed a 10-year deal with the Walt Disney Company. The deal worth "tens of millions of dollars" includes attraction sponsorships and signage at Disney parks and resorts.

Old Salem Museums & Gardens in Winston-Salem is celebrating 200 years of Winkler family tradition this Saturday (November 3) a day of family fun planned with the focus on the Winkler Bakery. In an effort to make it easier for pediatricians to spot and begin early treatment for children with autism spectrum disorders, the American Academy of Pediatrics (meeting in San Francisco) has released two new reports with recommendations for identifying and managing these conditions. Details published in the November issue of Pediatrics.

Organic food is healthier than non-organic foods…according to a large four-year study out of Europe. The study found that organic fruits and vegetables had up to 40% more antioxidants (believed to help prevent disease) than the non-organic versions. The National Hurricane Center in Miami is keeping a close eye on Tropical Storm Noel. A tropical storm watch may be posted later today for south Florida. Eleven fatalities and four missing in the Dominican Republic because of heavy rain and mudslides from Noel. http://www.weather.com/

A fire that claimed the lives of seven college students at Ocean Isle on Sunday likely started on the back deck of a rented beach house. Exactly what started the fire is still not known. A man delivering newspapers actually called 911 after seeing a column of smoking rising from the beach house.

A computer glitch helps a woman from the Triad scam QVC out of hundreds of items worth over $412,000 dollars. Quantina Moore-Perry of Greensboro pleaded guilty to scamming the home-shopping network QVC out of more than 1,800 items she received from QVC between March and November 2005. Moore-Perry ordered handbags, housewares, jewelry and electronics, then immediately canceled the orders and received credit for them. But the glitch caused the items to still be delivered to Moore-Perry, who then sold the items on eBay.

A weekend at the beach turns deadly: Seven college students lost their lives in a fire that raced through a beach house at Ocean Isle. Most of the students who died in the fire attended the University of South Carolina…one student went to Clemson. Thirteen students were staying at the beach house at the time of the fire.

The opening of an overflow homeless shelter at First Baptist Church in downtown WS has been pushed back from the beginning of November to the first of December because of building code concerns and sanitation details. The need for an overflow shelter came about after the WS City Council placed a 100 person cap at the city’s 4 existing homeless shelters.

OPRAH IS APOLOGIZING FOR ALLEDGED ABUSE AT THE SCHOOL SHE OPENED IN SOUTH AFRICA. The school principal and two administrators have been placed on leave.

Tropical storm warnings and Hurricane Watches are up in parts of the Caribbean. Tropical Storm Noel is threatening parts of Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica.

70% OF ALL THE WILDFIRES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HAVE BEEN CONTAINED. Seven people lost there lives and consumed hundreds of thousands of acres. Authorities have determined that two of the fires were intentionally set. Two other fires are considered suspicious.

Good news for residents in Southern California:
More than half of the wildfires that have scorched hundreds of acres are now fully contained. Winds have calmed down and shifted. Some of the evacuation orders have been lifted.
Officials saying arson is to blame for at least one of the wildfires in Southern California. The reward has increased to a quarter-of-a-million dollar reward in connection with the Santiago Fire…which consumed nearly 26-thousand acres.

President Bush will be assessing the wildfire damage in Southern California later today. Officials say losses because of the wildfires could top one-billion dollars. Also, authorities are investigating at least one of the fires as arson.

The Winston-Salem and Greensboro Chapters of the American Red Cross are sending volunteers to Southern California to help provide food and water to firefighters and emergency workers.

The Kernersville Chamber of Commerce is hosting a candidates’ forum
tonight (Thursday) from 6:30 to 8pm at the Town Hall in Kernersville.

New evacuation orders issued this morning: Almost 1 million ordered out of homes in Southern California. Wildfires are threaten new areas. About 50,000 people who were evacuated from San Diego County because of the wildfires in Southern California were allowed to return home last night. Nearly 600 square miles have been burned. 1,800 homes destroyed
More than six-thousand firefighters and about a hundred aircraft have been battling the fires. President Bush is scheduled to visit the area today.

The space shuttle Discovery is heading for a link up with the International Space Station. NASA says the Discovery crew will be in space for two weeks.

Thomasville will join High Point with ‘Mandatory’ water restrictions beginning on Nov 1st.

Wildfires across southern California have destroyed more than a thousand homes and forced the evacuation of nearly 300-thousand people. Strong Santa Ana winds are fueling the fires which are burning across seven counties in Southern California.

Governor Mike Easley in Greensboro yesterday with a big announcement: Skybus Airlines will now offer low cost flights from PTI. The low-cost carrier will create 375 new jobs and add nonstop service to seven cities.

NASA saying that bad weather at Kennedy Space Center in Florida could postpone the launch of space shuttle Discovery. Lift off is set for 11:38am this morning, but could be pushed to Wednesday or Thursday.

A woman from North Carolina died after a boulder struck her as she was biking with a group of friends at a Virginia state park. The rock struck 48-year-old Sudie Jenkins Hatcher of High Point shortly before 5 pm on Saturday at milepost 28 at the New River Trail State Park. The group said that they could hear the boulder crashing through the woods before it became airborne off a hill and struck Hatcher.

Tens–of–thousands of Turkish troops have been positioned at the northern border with Iraq. Top officials in Turkey are warning the U.S. and Iraq to do something to stop attacks by Kurdish rebels along the Turkish-Iraqi border.

Greensboro residents are upset over having to obey mandatory restrictions on water use while promoters of an RV rally are allowed to wash their vehicles at the Greensboro Coliseum parking lot. City officials said the promoters were cleared to wash the RVs under the current restrictions as long as it's done by professionals…commercial washing companies, such as the one hired by the rally organizers, do not fall under water restriction ordinances.

Virginia is now under a statewide burning ban because of the on going drought. One fatality associated with the wildfires burning parts of Southern California. The fires have knocked out power near Malibu. Thousands of people have been evacuated

The Surry County school system confirmed Friday that one of its employees is being treated for the MRSA infection. School officials in Yadkin County sealed off an entire classroom last week after learning a teacher at Starmount High School has MRSA. The classroom should be back open today.

The North Davidson Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a candidate’s forum at the Midway Fire Department tonight starting at 7pm. There are 13 people running for office in the town of Midway. Municipal elections are November 6th .

Close to 700 walkers participated in Forsyth County’s CROP Walk 2007: A walk to help fight hunger. Over $45,000 thousand dollars collected so far. Money collected will be distributed locally between Crisis Control and Sunnyside Ministry in Forsyth County plus worldwide through Church World Service.

A little wooly worm named Armstrong wiggled past 14-hundred other caterpillars as the winner of the 30th annual Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk over the weekend. Mountain folk use the brown and black stripes on the woolly worm to predict the severity of the coming winter.
According to Armstrong, the first four weeks of winter will be cold and snowy. Over thirty years, the woolly worm has been all or mostly correct 85% of the time.

Donald Fought (6th grade teacher at Southeast Middle in Kernersville) is being honored today. Mr. Fought has won the North Carolina’s ‘No Child Left Behind’ 2007 American Star of Teaching Award.

Doctors at Moses Cone Health System in Greensboro saying that they first noticed patients with 'community acquired MRSA' about five years ago.In the past six months, Moses Cone said its doctors have diagnosed 470 cases of MRSA. Most staph infections occur in people with weak immune systems, usually patients in hospitals and long-term care facilities.

Two more cases of the MRSA were confirmed yesterday at 2 area schools:
West Forsyth High School and Mineral Springs Elementary School in the WS –FC School system. Letters have been sent home to parents at those schools to help them understand the situation. MRSA is a specific strain of steph infection
-School officials in Yadkin County sealed off an entire classroom after learning a teacher at Starmount High School has MRSA. The teacher was diagnosed Monday. The classroom should be back open on Monday.
-Earlier this week, six football players from East Forsyth High School were diagnosed with the bacteria.

Severe Weather from Florida to New York:
A DAYCARE CENTER IN PENSACOLA, FLORIDA THAT TOOK A DIRECT HIT FROM A TORNADO YESTERDAY WILL RE-OPEN ON MONDAY. No one was hurt. The daycare center is part of Greater Little Rock Baptist Church, which was also heavily damaged by the tornado.

GOOD NEWS: An eighteen year old, autistic young man who has been missing since Sunday has been found alive. Jacob Allen was found by a volunteer searcher yesterday afternoon. Other than being hungry and thirsty, officials say Jacob was in good shape.Jacob had gotten separated from his family during a hiking trip in a West Virginia national forest on Sunday.

School nurses will be at East Forsyth High School today to teach students and staff how to protect themselves from MRSA, a hard-to-treat infection. On Wednesday, the school system confirmed that six members of the East Forsyth football team have been diagnosed with the disease. A 17-year-old senior at Staunton River High School in Bedford County, Virginia died on Monday after being diagnosed with MRSA.

One school district in Maine has voted to make prescription birth control pills and patches available to its Middle School students…ranging in age from eleven to 13. (The Portland Press Herald)

During a ceremony with the Dalai Lama, President Bush and Congressional leaders presented the Buddhist leader with the Congressional Gold Medal yesterday. The President calling on China to hold direct talks with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader.

Add Burlington to the list of Piedmont cities implementing mandatory water restrictions. The new guidelines take effect November 1.

Transportation Officials in Davidson County are considering making the I-85 Yadkin River bridge a toll road to help cover the $400 million dollar construction costs. Turnpike Authority Officials plan on presenting the proposal to lawmakers in Raleigh. If approved, the toll road could be finished by late 2008.

Some state and local governmental officials are pushing to ‘remove’ the land on which the Lazy 5 Ranch resides from agricultural status. If this change were to pass, the NC Department of Revenue would force the Lazy 5 Ranch to collect a 3% tax on the admission cost, plus pay for previous years when tax was not collected. Greensboro police are investigating the death of a pedestrian who attempted to cross Eugene Street Friday afternoon. Ronald Murden, of Newport News, Virginia, died at Moses Cone Hospital after attempting to cross six lanes of traffic and was hit by a car. No charges are expected to be filed.

Wachovia Bank is seeking about $940,000 dollars from Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and a business partner. The bank saying they defaulted on a loan. The lawsuit states that Vick's obligations are impaired due to his recent indictment on federal dog fighting charges

PRESIDENT BUSH'S NOMINEE FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL WILL APPEAR BEFORE A SENATE PANEL TODAY. The Senate Judiciary Committee holds the hearing to question Michael Mu-ka-sey (mehw-KAY-zee) who would succeed Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General.

The California Highway Patrol said there were three separate car crashes involving about 15 vehicles when a blinding sandstorm surprised drivers Tuesday near Lancaster. Authorities said two people were fatally wounded on Highway 14 in the desert north of Los Angeles. The National Weather Service said winds were gusting up to 55 mph at the time of the crash

Headlines:
The Governor asking everyone in the state to get serious about conserving water. During a press conference yesterday, Governor Easley urging residents to stop watering their lawns and washing their cars to fight the state’s prolonged drought. Easley did not declare a state of emergency (because of the drought) in North Carolina…but he did order a statewide ban on open burning and strongly encouraged local governments to take steps to improve water conservation in their communities. According to the Mecklenburg County medical examiner's office, a 13-year-old boy who was injured during a football game last week died of a blunt trauma head injury. Will McLeod was an eighth-grader at North Lincoln Middle School. The teen’s mom stated that her son had carried the ball and was tackled. Will got up, walked to the sideline, and then fell to the ground.

IRAQ'S PRIME MINISTER IS CALLING FOR URGENT TALKS WITH TURKISH OFFICIALS. Turkey is considering a military response to stop Kurdish rebel attacks along the border with southeastern Turkey. The U.S. is urging Turkey not to take military action.

For the 3rd year in a row Casting Crowns has been nominated for an "American Music Award." Other Christian artists nominated include Jeremy Camp and TobyMac.
The American Music Awards will air on November 18th on ABC.

One man in Vermont is fighting to have a reference to John 3:16 to be allowed on his personalized license plate. A lower court upheld the Vermont governments policy prohibiting references to deities on license plates. The Alliance Defense Fund is calling Vermont’s current policy, quote, blatantly unconstitutional.

Waiting for a nap gives the same benefits as a few minutes of sleep.
So say researchers in England following up on previous work that showed ‘siestas’ or ‘naps’ lower the risk of fatal heart attacks. According to the study, you can lower your blood pressure during the minutes between when lights were turned off and when you fall asleep.
The report can be found in the online edition of the Journal of Applied Physiology.

One congregation rebounding after a fire destroyed their church’s sanctuary. A fire in the furnace at Tabernacle UMC in Tobaccoville caused over $200,000 dollars worth of damage.

Muddy but unhurt: A happy ending for three University of Texas students who became lost after going cave exploring on Saturday. The students ended up spending about 29 hours in a cave near Austin, Texas. Rescue workers guided them out of the cave late Sunday afternoon. Much of the cave requires explorers to move through on their hands and knees or on their stomachs.

A deadly accident over the weekend claimed the lives of 3 people that shut down a tunnel along Interstate Five (a major roadway through Los Angeles). Most of I-5 is back open this morning. Officials warn that it could be months before the major Los Angeles roadway is back to normal.

A twist to the Biblical principal …INSTEAD OF TAKING UP AN OFFERING YESTERDAY, A LARGE CHURCH IN CHARLOTTE GAVE MONEY BACK: Elevation Church, in Charlotte, gave back close to $40-thousand dollars to it’s congregation. Those attending services on Sunday were directed to take an envelope from the offering basket when it was passed and then use the money in the envelope to minister to someone in their life in the coming week. The envelopes held various denominations, including five, ten, and twenty dollar bills. The group JUMP5 recently took a break from their ‘Hello-Goodbye’ Tour to visit Graceland in Memphis. The group was given a tour of the mansion and grounds. NFL: Veteran quarterback Vinny Testaverde leading the Panthers over Arizona…25-10.

An overhead NBC TV camera mounted on wires collapsed onto the turf during a timeout early in Sunday night's game between the New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks, almost hitting two Seattle players and causing a 10-minute delay.
Game officials cleared both teams from the middle of the field while the network got the camera back up to normal height. Saints beat the Seahawks 28-17.

A portion of Highway 421 west of Wilkesboro will be dedicated this morning in memory of NASCAR driver Benny Parsons, who died in January after a bout with cancer. Parsons name is among the elite group of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers.

Marvel Enterprises has stopped all of its shipments of Curious George products made in China. A California-based non-profit group saying that tests on a random Curious George doll revealed 10 times the new legal maximum of lead. A recall is pending further testing.

The Fall Furniture Market officially starts this morning in High Point.
80,000 people expected to visit the Fall Market which runs through the weekend.
