Today is the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina . Close to 1,000 deaths in Louisiana were caused directly or indirectly by Hurricane Katrina, making it the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast in 80 years. 80% of the 986 deaths occurred on the day of the storm -- Aug. 29, 2005. Residents along the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida keeping an eye on Gustav. Gustav is currently in the Caribbean, threatening Cuba and Jamaica. Forecasters say Gustav should be back up to hurricane strength later today. Gustav is already blamed for 22 deaths across Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It was three years Friday that Hurricane Katrina slammed into the coastal areas of Louisiana.

Delegates to the Democratic National Convention officially nominated Barack Obama and Joseph Biden as their candidates of choice for President and Vice President.

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL JOHN MCCAIN HAS REPORTEDLY DECIDED ON HIS RUNNING MATE…but will not make the announcement until tomorrow morning. The Republican National Convention starts Monday in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

A popular beach on North Carolina's Outer Banks that has been closed to off-road vehicles has been reopened by the National Park Service in time for Labor Day weekend visitors. The area known as Bodie Island Spit is open to give fishermen access to Oregon Inlet. The area had been closed since spring to protect endangered shorebird nests.

THE MATTEL CORPORATION HAS WON A HUGE COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT CASE RELATED TO THE TOY COMPANY'S OWNERSHIP OF THE BRATZ LINE OF PRODUCTS. A federal court on Tuesday awarded the toy company one-hundred-million dollars in damages from MGA Entertainment and its CEO.

Scientists from the US and China have identified the first gene directly associated with the onset of severe "dry" macular degeneration…one of two forms of age-related macular degeneration that currently threatens the vision of up to nine million older Americans. Strange accident at a recent Grasshoppers game will cost one fan his left eye. Carroll Master, his wife and 2-year-old son were enjoying a baseball game at NewBridge Bank Park last Friday. He was on his way back from the concession stand when a foul ball hit him in his left eye. Doctors said the force of the ball destroyed Master's left eye. TROPICAL STORM GUSTAV IS STILL DUMPING HEAVY RAIN ON HAITI. The National Hurricane Center saying that the Tropical Storm could regain hurricane strength as it moves toward Cuba and Jamaica over the next 24 hours.Gustav’s projected path puts the storm south of Louisiana early Labor Day Monday morning.

CHRISTIAN GROUPS IN INDIA ARE REPORTING DOZENS OF VIOLENT ATTACKS AGAINST CHRISTIANS FOLLOWING THE ASSASSINATION OF AN ANTI-CHRISTIAN HINDU LEADER OVER THE WEEKEND. Those attacks have left at least two people dead. Gospel for Asia reports that at least one of its missionaries was injured and a number of homes and churches have been destroyed. Christians are being targeted even though authorities believe it was Maoist rebels who assassinated the radical Hindu leader on Saturday. Much of the violence is occurring in India's Orissa State.

Forecasters have issued a Flash Flood Watch this morning for nearly a dozen western North Carolina counties as the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay is dumping heavy rains and cut power to thousands of customers. Drought has gripped the western portions of the state for months. Rainfall at the Asheville airport through Monday was about 11 inches below normal.

Four teenagers have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that took the life of a 40 year old man in Kernersville early Sunday morning. Three of the suspects in the shooting are students at Glenn High School. A SMALL PLANE IN GUATEMALA CRASHED YESTERDAY, CLAIMING THE LIVES OF TEN PEOPLE, INCLUDING FOUR AMERICANS. The plane was carrying a total of fourteen people. The Americans were part of a team from the Utah-based organization Choice Humanitarian. Survivors say the pilot tried to make a safe emergency landing after the plane's engine stopped.

Along with normal first-day jitters and excitement, students in a tiny school in Harrold, Texas started classes yesterday wondering which teachers might be packing heat. Several parents said they had no idea that employees of the K-12 school in Harrold, Texas were allowed to carry concealed guns on campus until recent publicity about the school board's policy, approved quietly last fall. School districts in some states, including Florida and Arizona, have closed loopholes that allowed guns on K-12 campuses. Utah allows concealed weapons at public universities but not at primary or secondary schools.

A funeral service has been set for Matt Gfeller who passed away early Sunday morning after suffering a serious head injury during a play in the fourth quarter of Friday night's High School Football game against RJ Reynolds and Greensboro Page High School. THE 2008 SUMMER OLYMPICS IN BEIJING has ended with the US taking home a total of 110 medals…36 were Gold, 38 were Silver, and another 36 were Bronze. Chinese athletes won a total of 100 medals, 51 of which were Gold. The 2012 Summer Olympics will be held in London.

Suspected members of the "Latin Kings" gang have been arrested in connection with a home invasion and assault. According to the Greensboro News & Record, three suspected gang members and five other people were arrested Thursday.

Officials from the Mexican consulate's North Carolina offices will be in Lexington on Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church (419 South Main Street) to provide legal Mexican immigrants with passports. TROPICAL STORM FAY is still lingering. Various Flood Warnings and Watches are in effect for east central Florida. Fay is forecast to move very slowly across the northern Florida peninsula today. The National Weather Service says nearly 25 inches of rain has fallen in and around Melbourne, Florida. The storm is sustaining maximum winds of near 60 miles per hour.

Officials in Spain have called for three days of mourning…following the crash of a passenger jet in Madrid yesterday. The crash killing 153 people. The Spanair Flight was carrying 172 people. There were 19 survivors, including two infants.

Lots of teachers preparing for students. In Guilford County: an estimated 72,000 students will report to class on Tuesday at 120 campuses. 36 out of 120 schools will require standard mode of dress this school year. The district will not raise meal prices or shift many bus stops, despite a tight budget and rising fuel costs.

The National Park Service is proposing the removal of raccoons from a portion of the Cape Lookout National Seashore to determine if it will help endangered bird and turtle species survive. The High School graduation rate is up slightly for 2007. The parents of a 24-day-old infant who suffering from several broken bones have been charged with abuse. Christina Courtner and Chris Daniels were taken into custody yesterday stemming from a Forsyth County sheriff's department investigation.
