Before leaving Bangkok, Thailand (on his way to China), President Bush criticized China’s human and religious rights record. The President is scheduled to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Bush will be the first sitting U.S. president to attend the Olympic Games outside of the US.

On Tuesday, former Olympic speed skater Joey Cheek had his visa revoked by Chinese authorities. Cheek had planned on traveling to Beijing this week. As many as eight firefighters and a pilot are presumed dead in the crash of a helicopter that had just picked up workers battling a blaze in a Northern California forest.
