The Winston-Salem / Forsyth County school system is making some changes for school bus riders…according to a phone message being sent to parents. For the upcoming school year, buses will not travel into neighborhoods with fewer than 10 riders. In some cases, bus stops may be as far as a half-mile away from a student's home. The reason: escalating fuel prices.

The good and the bad: The long-awaited review of the Greensboro police department is now public knowledge. Vice-President Dick Cheney and Sen. Elizabeth Dole will be among the high level political dignitaries attending the funeral of former Senator Jesse Helms this afternoon in Raleigh.
Helms passed away last Friday, July 4th. He was 86. State flags will remain at half staff through the end of the day in honor of Senator Helms.

Hurricane Bertha now a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds near 120 mph. Forecasters expect the first hurricane in the Atlantic to head toward Bermuda. The Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.

The Lexington City Council will hold another annexation hearing this evening at 7pm at the Smith Civic Center on Main St. in Lexington. In April, the City Council annexed four areas of Davidson County into the Lexington city limits. The Midway Town Council brought back the issue of alcohol sales last night. Through much discussion, the council decided to let the issue die.

A Silver Alert has been issued for a missing 21-year-old woman.Hope Lynn Widener was last seen at a home on Old Toast Road in Mt. Airy. Authorities think that Widener may be headed to Staten Island, N.Y. Please contact the Surry County Sheriff's Office if you have any information.

The Church of England's governing body has agreed to allow women to become bishops but wants to work out some way to accommodate those who object to the decision. Opponents of the ordination of women argue that Jesus entrusted the church to 12 male disciples. Church of England officials say it is unlikely any woman would be consecrated as a bishop before 2014.
