Sex offenders who commit certain crimes against children will face at least 25 years in prison under a new North Carolina law. Governor Mike Easley signed into law the measure known as Jessica's Law…named after 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford. A suicide hot line launched a year ago has received calls from more than 22,000 veterans of the Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam wars and has prevented over 1,200 suicides. Psychological distress -- including anxiety and depression -- increases a man's risk of developing type 2-diabetes. In women, the Swedish study showed NO correlation between psychological distress and diabetes. The study appears in the journal Diabetic Medicine.

Starting this Friday, all public schools in North Carolina will be tobacco-free. The popular urban street pastime called double dutch, in which competitors jump between two ropes twirled eggbeater-style, is getting more recognition, becoming an officially sanctioned sport in New York City high schools. Double dutch will be a spring sport this coming school year after basketball season is over and there is space in the gyms. According to the National Double Dutch League, Dutch settlers brought the game to New York in colonial times - hence the name.

OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST PAUL HAMM HAS DECIDED TO DROP OUT OF THE UPCOMING SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES IN BEIJING. Hamm who won gold in 2004 broke his hand back in May. Rehab on the hand has not helped to get Hamm back to 100%. One of three alternates will take his place. Hamm began his return to competitive gymnastics in August 2007 after taking three years off to complete his education.
