The National Hurricane Center has issued tropical storm warnings along the Gulf of Mexico from Louisiana to Florida. Tropical Depression #5 formed in the Gulf off the Florida coast late yesterday afternoon. TD#5 will likely make landfall Friday afternoon. The forecasted track of the storm takes it toward Louisiana, the mouth of the Mississippi. The main threat is heavy rain and flooding. According to an official at Wake Forest - Baptist Medical Center, Shelby Chisom, the Davidson County teen that was killed over the weekend, died due to massive internal bleeding caused by trauma to the liver. 21 year old Michael John Craver allegedly threw a concrete paving stone through a car window, killing the 17-year-old girl. Hundreds attended a prayer vigil last night at North Davidson Sr High in memory of Shelby. Funeral arrangements are still pending. (journalnow.com)

"American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino has been hospitalized in Charlotte for a medication overdose. Fantasia's manager says that the overdose was not life threatening. (WCNC)

One fatality associated with an early morning crash near High Point University early yesterday morning. Investigators said Andrew Wade Smith was driving about 90 mph when he lost control of his truck and crashed into a utility pole near Montlieu Avenue and College Drive.

Demolition of several vacant buildings along Deacon Boulevard near the Joel Coliseum is set to begin next week. Officials with Wake Forest University say that they are moving ahead with plans to re-develop the area. The Walmart in Mount Airy was closed yesterday afternoon after a strong storm dumped several thousand gallons of water through an exposed hole in the roof. A crew was doing maintenance on the roof near the back of the store at about 1:15 p.m. The rain drenched an area of ceiling near the electronics section, causing a several tiles to collapse onto the floor below. A plane crash in Northern Alaska claimed the lives of five people including former Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens. Officials say that the plane hit a mountain. Ex-NASA boss Sean O'Keefe and three others survived the crash. SPORTS: Olympic Gold Medalist found dead. Antonio Pettigrew, one of the track coaches at UNC, was found dead in his car early Tuesday. Authorities believe the cause of death was either a suicide or an accidental overdose. His body has been sent to a medical examiner for an autopsy. Pettigrew was a graduate of St. Augustine's College in Raleigh. Pettigrew was stripped of an Olympic gold medal after admitting to using performance-enhancing drugs.
