Residents from the outer banks to Boston are bracing for EARL. As of 8am, Hurricane Earl, a Category 4 storm, has sustained winds of 145 mph. Forecasters say ‘Earl’ will brush by the Carolina coast later today and track northward toward New England. Hurricane watches and warnings have been posted from North Carolina to Delaware. Governor Perdue has issued a state of emergency for the coastal areas of the state. Triple A of the Carolinas suggesting that if you are planning on traveling to the coast over the next 24 to 36 hours…please check the weather and road conditions before heading out.

I-T services firm Bald Eagle Technologies is merging with Maryland-based Outsource I-T. The combined firm will operate under the OutsourceIT brand. Bald Eagle, founded in 1996, provides network services and hosting to clients. A man was arrested last night after a nearly two-hour standoff that started when officers apparently arrived at the scene of an armed robbery in progress at Syd's Tobacco Shop in the Parkway Plaza Shopping Center. Officers entered the store about 10 and came out with a man in handcuffs. The situation was resolved without any injuries or shots fired.

Back-to-School speeding? Winston-Salem police have issued 92 traffic citations, mostly for speeding, in school zones since classes began Aug. 25. Police focused on drivers in the zones of Old Town and Speas elementary schools, and Carver, Mount Tabor and Reagan high schools after receiving complaints about speeding in those areas. Another road sign…another miss-spelling? A traffic sign on I-77 in Charlotte is supposed to read "Independence", but instead reads a little different ("Indepednence"). The letters "d" and "n" are reversed. The state DOT is aware of the error. The company that manufactured the sign will fix it at no cost to the taxpayers.
