A funeral mass for Kate Thornton, the 5-year-old girl who was battling leukemia, will be Wednesday morning. Visitation with the family will be tomorrow morning followed by a funeral Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in High Point. Thomasville Funeral Home is assisting the family. An organization called Kisses 4 Kate raised $100,000 to help the family of the 5-year-old girl battling leukemia purchase a larger home. The family moved into the home on Saturday. The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans by a small church in Florida this Saturday could put the lives of American troops in danger. Terry Jones, the pastor of the 50-member Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, has organized the Quran burning to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks this Saturday.

A Davidson County man who was the victim of a ‘hit-and-run’ along Business 85 last week is wanting to know who hit him. Mark Kellam, Jr., said he was walking along the Business I-85 median near Thomasville last Tuesday when he was hit. Kellam was released from the hospital yesterday. Kellam, a single dad who worked as a roofer, sustained serious injuries including an injury that left him without the use of his right hand. No charges have been filed in the accident.

Family Service of the Piedmont, a domestic violence shelter based in High Point, could be forced to shut down after finding out that they will lose a $90,000 grant in state funding. Over 100 student-athletes in the Guilford County Schools who failed to attain a 2.0 grade-point average in the spring semester are ineligible to play for their high school teams this semester. Guilford County’s policy is stricter than the state’s eligibility requirements. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and Charlotte-Mecklenburg school systems also have a 2.0 student athlete policy. Tropical Storm Hermine is weakening as it travels into Tesas after hitting Mexico’s Gulf coast this morning bringing heavy rains and strong winds to an area battered by Hurricane Alex earlier this summer. The storm was expected to dump up to a foot of rain in some areas and cause flash flooding. Schools canceled classes on both sides of the border. www.weather.com

Winston-Salem Dash clinched the Southern Division second half championship on Monday with a 10 - 5 win over the Salem Red Sox. The Dash finished with the best overall record in the Carolina League by 7.5 games and had the best Southern Division record in both the first and second halves. The WS Dash will play the Kinston Indians for the Southern Division Championship. First pitch is Wednesday night at 7pm at BB&T Ballpark.
