‘Skimming devices’ were found on two standalone ATMs in Thomasville on Monday…and cyber thieves are likely stealing your personal banking information.  Investigators believe the skimmers were placed on two ATM machines sometime last Friday and remained there over the weekend.  The Thomasville Times reporting that ‘skimmers’ were found on the Cash Points at Midway Plaza (off National Highway) and the Cash Points on West Main Street across from the Thomasville Post Office . NO arrests have been made in the case.

Some tips: Thieves normally target standalone ATMs for skimming.  Be aware of anything that is raised off the machine itself, like wires protruding from the ATM machine. Skimming devices are usually put on top of the real ATM card reader, allowing the skimmer devise to read your personal info (like PIN numbers) while the ATM reads it. http://www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-how-to-spot-a-skimming-atm-20110817,0,504812.story

If you live in Mount Airy, you have likely seen people wearing T-shirts that have the words “Bring it Beck!” printed on them. The ‘Beck’ refers to Conservative TV and radio host Glenn Beck who is searching for a community in the U.S. that has been affected by the loss of textile jobs to begin manufacturing his new “1791” clothing line…with the profits going to charity. Mount Airy Mayor Deborah Cochran has been interviewed on Beck’s radio show in an effort to bring Beck’s project (and jobs) to Mount Airy. Antonio Chacon (from Albuquerque, NM) was at the right place at the right time. Chacon is credited for saving the life of a 6-year-old girl who was in the middle of being abducted. Chacon, a 24-year-old mechanic and father of two young daughters, came home from work early to spend time with his family Monday afternoon. Chacon heard a neighbor yell for the would-be kidnapper to let the 6 year old child go. That’s when he saw a man throw the child into a van.  Chacon jumped into his vehicle, chasing the abductor’s van through a maze of neighborhoods. The abductor’s van crashed into a pole, the suspect fled and Chacon was able to rescue the 6 year old girl. The abductor was later captured by police. http://www.news-record.com/content/2011/08/17/article/man_hailed_as_hero_after_thwarting_6_year_olds_kidnapping

Can’t fit in 30 minutes a day of recommended exercise, well, how about 15 minutes?
New research suggesting that even a minimum amount of time spent exercising daily will lead to better health, and even add years to your life.  Men and women benefitted equally to time spent exercising.

The phrase "Nice guys finish last" appears to be the case in who gets paid the most. "Agreeable" or nice workers make much less than their ‘mean’ co-workers, with the pay gap wider among men.  The study, titled "Do Nice Guys—and Gals—Really Finish Last?" used survey data over 20 years to examine "agreeableness".  The findings: men who ‘disagreed’ the nost at work made 18% (or close to $10,000 dollars) - more in salary a year than those who were ‘agreeable’.  Same for women (but not as profitable), ‘disagreeable’ females made only 5% (or close to $2,000 dollars) more than those who were in the nice or ‘agree’ category.
The problem: many managers often don't realize that they reward are rewarding ‘bad behavior’ or disagreeableness.  The study contained data from over 20 years from three different surveys.

The state has chosen a ‘preferred route’ for widening Highway 109 to four lanes in Davidson and Forsyth counties. "Alternative 6" will run from Friendship-Ledford Road to I-40 near the current Highway 109 interchange. The Winston-Salem Journal reporting that the proposed path would take out 108 homes and 5 businesses.  Property owners that could be effected along the ‘preferred route’ are not very happy with the DOT's announcement. They say that having to wait several years to have their land purchased would significantly drop their property values.

Sleep tight???   More bedbugs have been detected in a handful of dorms at Wake Forest University. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, the university used a canine search team last week to check dorms on campus before students arrive for the fall semester. The canine teams did find evidence of bedbugs in a very small number of rooms. The rooms were ‘cleansed’ using a high-heat treatment (turning up the heat to at least 120 degrees for a specific amount of time) is considered by pest-control experts to be 100% effective.

When it comes to soft contact lenses, rubbing and rinsing before soaking overnight is the best way to remove germs and prevent eye infection. The 12-year-old boy who was rescued after spending 15 minutes or more in the cold Pacific last week, likely survived because of his age.  "Dale" Ostrander was visiting the southwest Washington coast with his church youth group last Friday when he was swept out by a riptide. Rescuers who pulled Dale out of the water said he had no pulse and his face was pale. It's unclear how long Dale was underwater. A rescuer said Dale was pulled from the water 15 minutes after crews were dispatched. So how did he survive? Studies of near-drownings in cold water have found that survival depends on many factors including a person's age, water temperature, time spent underwater and how fast CPR is given. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20110810/D9P1H9KO1.html

Cheri Schumann Taylor would like Kennewick High School's class of 1971 to know she is very much ALIVE. A story in Saturday's Tri-City Herald about Kennewick High's reunion focused on seven classmates who were ‘murdered’ out of the 80 classmates who had died. Cheri was mistakenly included as a classmate who killed. But Cheri lives north of Seattle, with her husband and four children. She says she's happy, healthy and not ready to be buried. Reunion co-chairwoman Debra Blum told the newspaper the report of Taylor's pre-mature demise came by email, apparently from another classmate. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20110808/D9OVVM081.html

First Day of School for students in Stokes, Surry and Mt Airy City

Gas prices have fallen a few cents over the past week. The current average for a gallon of regular unleaded in the Triad is $3.66 cents.

More job cuts in the Triad: Fox 8 reporting that Thomas Built Buses plans to cut 60 employees from its C2 plant in High Point by Friday.  FYI: Currently, the unemployment rate in North Carolina stands at 9.9%

Wall Street rallied a bit on Tuesday. The Federal Reserve saying that it will keep interest rates LOW over the next 24 months. Great for getting a loan. Not so great for investments.

In Davidson County last night, it was standing room only at the Commissioners meeting last night, with animal lovers wanting to end the practice of using a ‘gas chamber’ to euthanize stray and unwanted animals at the county’s animal shelter. The county will continue its use of ‘gas-ing’ the unwanted animals, with commissioners voting to use ‘more’ lethal injection. FYI: Nearly 7,000 animals were put down at the shelter in Davidson County last year. Residents can help keep that number down just by spaying and neutering their pets.

The city of Greensboro is hoping to reduce the number of 'panhandlers' in the downtown area. Paper fliers are being passed out in the downtown area with some suggestions on what to do if a panhandler approaches you. The flier suggests to either say "no" or offer a bottle of water or a food certificate to a panhandler, instead of cash. FYI: Greensboro Police have charged 44 people with panhandling since June.  http://www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-panhandling-flyers-given-out-in-downtown-greensboro-20110809,0,1639407.story

Dry conditions and stormy weather have taken a toll on older trees this year in Winston-Salem. City crews have cut down more than 400 trees at city parks and along the roadways so far this year. Many more trees are slated to be cut down in western Winston-Salem around Country Club Road. Most of the cut trees are chopped up as mulch or as FREE firewood available at the city yard on Reynolds Park Road. FYI: The city replants all trees that are removed. http://www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-400-large-old-trees-cut-down-in-winstonsalem-this-year-20110809,0,3407605.story

The Mayor of Philadelphia Michael Nutter is appalled at the recent ‘teen mob’ attacks on citizens in his city. The teens are part of a violent "flash mob" where a group of people decide to gather at a given place via e-mail and social media. Mayor has signed an order reducing curfews to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays for people under the age of 18 in the heart of Philadelphia's downtown area. In the rest of the city, the curfew will remain at 10 p.m. for children under age 13 and midnight for teens under age 18. In tandem with the curfew, the city will expand recreation center hours throughout the city.    RnR

The FREE app gives you a way to electronically store photos and vital information about your kids…so you can quickly provide physical info such as height and weight to local police, if (heaven forbid) your child goes missing.  FYI: According to the FBI, a child goes missing every 40 seconds. The stock market continued its ‘free fall’. The Dow Jones dropped over 600 points yesterday. Part of the drop was due to Standard and Poor's downgrading the credit ratings for not only the U.S. government but also Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Those agencies control nearly half the nation's home loans.

Interest rates are at all time lows right now. A 30-year mortgage now carries a 4 percent interest rate, while a 15-year has 3.25 percent interest for the most qualified.

Forsyth County commissioners voted 6 to 1 last night to take a case dealing with sectarian prayer before public meetings to the U.S. Supreme Court.  Fox 8 reporting that commissioners have been fighting the ‘prayer’ case since March 2007, when a lawsuit was filed by the ACLU suggesting that prayers referring to a specific deity, such as praying in the name of Jesus, at public meetings are unconstitutional.

The Forsyth County Commission meeting was standing room only Monday as animal advocates showed their support for a law banning tethering (or tying or chaining an animal). The county is writing up a proposed ordinance that could be approved by the end of the month. Any passed ban would not go into effect for at least two years.

Second graders at Peck Elementary and Murphy Traditional Academy in Greensboro will be making a big splash when school starts back. The "Learn to Swim" program begins in mid-September at the new Greensboro Aquatic Center. The kids will be given 10 swimming lessons. Each class will last about 40 minutes. The program is being funded by an anonymous donation.  The district hopes to expand the swimming program to all second graders. http://www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-guilford-county-schools-to-give-swimming-lessons-to-second-graders-20110808,0,6542372.story

Deadly helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan has claimed the lives of 30 US military personnel, including 22 Navy SEALs. What? A 2-month-old infant was taken to the hospital after being locked in a hot car over the weekend in Asheville. The Citizen-Times of Asheville reports that a passer-by noticed an infant inside a car about 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon…then flagged down a fire truck. Firefighters broke a window in the car to rescue the infant. The outside temperature was about 85 degrees.  The mother arrived about 10 minutes later. The 29-year-old mother (Jennifer Knox) said that she had locked her keys in the car and couldn't reach her husband on a cell phone, so she walked to the restaurant where he works to get keys. Social workers will meet with Knox…who was charged with child abuse.

Global markets continue to have a negative reaction to Friday's first-ever downgrade of the US credit rating by the Standard & Poors rating agency.  The downgrade signals that the S&P believes U.S. government bonds are now a riskier investment. Another possible US downgrade is possible within six months.  U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the S&P used "terrible judgment" when it downgraded the U.S. credit rating last week from the top triple-A grade. http://www.voanews.com/english/news/asia/Major-Asian-Markets-Lower-After-SP-Downgrade-of-US-Credit-Rating-127128338.html
