Your WBFJ Family Station Forecast:  Sunny skies…High 93

First Day of School for students in Stokes, Surry and Mt Airy City

Gas prices have fallen a few cents over the past week. The current average for a gallon of regular unleaded in the Triad is $3.66 cents.

More job cuts in the Triad: Fox 8 reporting that Thomas Built Buses plans to cut 60 employees from its C2 plant in High Point by Friday.  FYI: Currently, the unemployment rate in North Carolina stands at 9.9%

Wall Street rallied a bit on Tuesday. The Federal Reserve saying that it will keep interest rates LOW over the next 24 months. Great for getting a loan. Not so great for investments.

In Davidson County last night, it was standing room only at the Commissioners meeting last night, with animal lovers wanting to end the practice of using a ‘gas chamber’ to euthanize stray and unwanted animals at the county’s animal shelter. The county will continue its use of ‘gas-ing’ the unwanted animals, with commissioners voting to use ‘more’ lethal injection. FYI: Nearly 7,000 animals were put down at the shelter in Davidson County last year. Residents can help keep that number down just by spaying and neutering their pets.

The city of Greensboro is hoping to reduce the number of 'panhandlers' in the downtown area. Paper fliers are being passed out in the downtown area with some suggestions on what to do if a panhandler approaches you. The flier suggests to either say "no" or offer a bottle of water or a food certificate to a panhandler, instead of cash. FYI: Greensboro Police have charged 44 people with panhandling since June.  http://www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-panhandling-flyers-given-out-in-downtown-greensboro-20110809,0,1639407.story

Dry conditions and stormy weather have taken a toll on older trees this year in Winston-Salem. City crews have cut down more than 400 trees at city parks and along the roadways so far this year. Many more trees are slated to be cut down in western Winston-Salem around Country Club Road. Most of the cut trees are chopped up as mulch or as FREE firewood available at the city yard on Reynolds Park Road. FYI: The city replants all trees that are removed. http://www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-400-large-old-trees-cut-down-in-winstonsalem-this-year-20110809,0,3407605.story

The Mayor of Philadelphia Michael Nutter is appalled at the recent ‘teen mob’ attacks on citizens in his city. The teens are part of a violent "flash mob" where a group of people decide to gather at a given place via e-mail and social media. Mayor has signed an order reducing curfews to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays for people under the age of 18 in the heart of Philadelphia's downtown area. In the rest of the city, the curfew will remain at 10 p.m. for children under age 13 and midnight for teens under age 18. In tandem with the curfew, the city will expand recreation center hours throughout the city.    RnR

NFL pre-season news:  Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith injured one of his fingers during practice yesterday. Good news: NO broken bones.
