Time Warner Cable is apologizing to thousands of its customers.
As many as 51,000 cable subscribers lost service Wednesday and Thursday.
Company officials said an overnight upgrade caused the outages.
About 24,000 customers from Surry, Yadkin, Forsyth, Davie and Davidson counties called the company to report the outage. www.wxii.com

The first of many: Last night was the first Democratic presidential debate at South Carolina State University sponsored by MSNBC. During the 90-minute event, the 8 Democratic presidential hopefuls took barbs at President Bush focusing in on the war in Iraq. CNN / USA Radio News

Former WXII-TV anchor Tolly Carr has been indicted on three charges stemming from an accident back on March 11 that killed Casey Bokhoven. Carr turned himself into the Forsyth County jail last week on 2 of the 3 charges. (WS Journal)

A 2-year-old boy is recovering after being attacked by a dog yesterday afternoon. The attack happened in the Flatrock area near Mt Airy.
The boy was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center with injuries to his face and head. (journalnow.com)

A month after a fatal fire in a Mocksville adult care facility…Representative Julia Howard (Davie County) is pushing legislation that would ban smoking in all of North Carolina’s long term facilities. (www.journalnow.com)

"American Idol" raised more than $30 million dollars for young people in Africa and the United States. Who was voted off…no one! Two contestants will be eliminated next week.

A $124 billion dollar war emergency spending bill has passed through the House and now moves to the Senate. The bill calls for a troop pull out from Iraq beginning by October 1. President Bush has promised to veto the bill if it includes a troop pull out. (usa radio network)

Rain is in the forecast for Blacksburg, Virginia: Officials with Virginia Tech will be “carefully and respectfully” moving some of the memorials that might be damaged or destroyed by the impending storms. Governor Easley has declared Friday (April 20) as a day of mourning in memory of the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings earlier this week. The governor is also calling for a moment of silence at noon today.

Virginia Tech Alumni have declared today Hokie Hope: Orange and Maroon Effect day.
VT alumni are urging that you wear something orange or maroon today in support of VT students, faculty and their families.

Evangelist Franklin Graham said Cho Seung-Hui, the killer at Virginia Tech University, was "filled with evil,” and that Satan is responsible for Monday’s mass killings of 32 people at the Blacksburg, Va., campus.
Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, sent 20 chaplains from his ministry’s Rapid Response Team to the Virginia Tech campus to help students, faculty and staff deal with their emotions in the wake of the massacre.

Columbine High School in Colorado is closed today
marking the eighth anniversary of the Columbine school shooting.
During the 1999 Columbine attack, two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, fatally wounded 12 classmates and a teacher before killing themselves. (CNN)

The Governor is requesting Federal Disaster Aid to help with the recent freeze damage to crops over Easter weekend. Estimated crop losses stand at over $111 million dollars across the state. Federal aid would allow farmers to get federal emergency loans. (NCNN)

School officials along with police are investigating recent graffiti at
Mount Tabor High School. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

A 10-year-old boy was killed early Wednesday morning after crashing the truck that he was driving near on Garner Road near Yadkinville. A 7-year-old passenger was treated for injuries. A State Trooper tried to stop the truck (driven by 10 year old Brandon Rudisill).

The healing has begun on the campus of Virginia Tech.
-Classes have been cancelled for the rest of the week at Virginia Tech.
-Norris Hall the site of one of the shootings will be closed for the remainder of the semester.
President Bush speaking at a Convocation service yesterday afternoon at Virginia Tech. A candle light vigil was attended by thousands last night.

Police are pouring over the writings of (cho – sung – we) Cho Seung-Hui,
the 23-year-old resident legal alien from South Korea who fatally wounded 32 people before turning the gun on himself. 14 others that were wounded in the rampage are still hospitalized.
-Police are search for further clues…continuing to ask the question…WHY?
Seung-Hui exhibited warning signs long before his deadly shooting spree on the Virginia Tech campus, fellow students and professors are saying.

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine was not wearing a seat belt when he was severely injured in an automobile accident last week.
Police saying that Corzine's SUV was going 91 mph in a 65 mph zone just before the crash.
Corzine, age 60, broke multiple bones in the wreck and remains hospitalized in intensive care, breathing with the help of a respirator.

Tragedy at Virginia Tech (information Link)

Two shooting incidents on campus Monday left 33 dead. Thirty-one, including the gunman, died at Norris Hall; two died at West Ambler Johnston Hall. Fifteen other victims from Norris are being treated at area hospitals.

Counseling assistance for faculty and staff today...

Essential personnel are to report for work today. Classes are canceled.

A public gathering will be held at Cassell Coliseum at 2 p.m.

-Duke Energy saying that many people still without power this morning…after Sunday’s rain storms and Monday’s wind.

Up-dated as of 9am: CNN reporting…
Virginia Tech President Charles Steger saying that the gunman who opened fire in Virginia Tech's Norris Hall, fatally wounding 30 people before turning the gun on himself, was "an Asian male who was a resident in one of the dorms.
-Steger didn't provide further details…however, he didn't think a second gunman was on the loose.
-Officials are still uncertain whether the student gunman at Norris Hall was the same one who fatally shot two people in a dorm two hours earlier.
-Classes also have been canceled Tuesday
-A public prayer gathering is scheduled for 2 p.m at Cassell Coliseum (the basketball arena on campus).
Monday’s shooting rampage at Virginia Tech was the deadliest in U.S. history with 33 fatalities including the gunman…with 15 others injured. www.vt.edu

Joshua (who was a student at Reagan) crashed his car into a tree early Saturday morning on Skylark Road. A 15-year-old passenger was taken to Baptist Hospital. Winston-Salem police saying that speed was a factor. (WXII)

No more ‘board of education’? A House committee in Raleigh has approved a bill that would ban corporal punishment in public schools across the state.
The measure heads to another committee before it reaches the full House.

The Surry County School Board has voted to adopt a ‘smoke-free’ policy for the Surry County School system beginning in July. WS / FC school board will address the smoking issue in May. 72% of public school systems in North Carolina have a 100% tobacco free policy. (WS Journal)

The Senate is scheduled to vote today on legislation that would mandate federal funding of the type of stem-cell research that requires the killing of human embryos. The House of Representatives, which passed a similar bill earlier this year, could vote on the Senate version of the bill as early as next week. A Texas family will be able to keep their critically-ill baby on life-support for at least nine more days…after a judge blocked a hospital's move to take the 17-month-old boy off life support.
The child, Emilio Gonzales, who is believed to have Leigh's Disease, a progressive illness that's hard to diagnose, has been at the Children's Hospital of Austin since December. But doctors said treatment is causing the boy to suffer without providing any benefit. The boy's mother insists that the decision on whether or not the boy lives is up to her and God, and no one else. Another hearing on the matter is scheduled for next week.

One central Ohio school district will not be calling on this substitute teacher again, after school officials said she used clothespins to silence four chatty kindergartners. Safe at home: A warm homecoming for the 15 British military sailors held hostage in Iran for nearly two weeks. Their plane arrived in London earlier this morning. A man was cut on the face with a knife during an argument Monday inside the Central Library on West Fifth Street in Winston-Salem.
Police say that two men who knew each other exchanged words, then a knife was pulled. Library staff members said that police told them the incident may have been gang-related.

Eleven Davidson County students and two adults were injured in a school bus crash yesterday afternoon on Trinity Street in Thomasville. Authorities say that the school bus driver ran a red light. The State is now the proud owners of SECCA:
The Council of State voted yesterday to take over the financially troubled Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem.
Officially, the property transfer is considered a gift from the Hanes Memorial Fund to the state. And the Council approved the purchase of Chimney Rock Park for $24 million.

Forecasters from Colorado State University are predicting 9 hurricanes in the Atlantic for 2007: Of the nine hurricanes forecasted, five will be major ones.

The Midway Town Council is expected to approve a resolution allowing residents to vote on beer and wine sales within the newly incorporated town of Midway.

The ACLU and the Winston-Salem Chapter of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State have filed a lawsuit on behalf of 3 Forsyth County residents. The Winston-Salem Journal reporting that the lawsuit is asking the court to prohibit prayers to a specific deity during the opening invocation of the Forsyth County Commissioners meetings. The group is claiming that public prayers to a specific deity is unconstitutional. Commissioners in Forsyth will meet Thursday to decide what to do in response to the lawsuit.

Legal experts say that pet owners are not likely to get much compensation if they individually sue pet food-maker Menu Foods over the death of a dog or cat, although they might fare better if they joined forces in a class action suit.
Most state laws consider animals…to be only personal property.
Over the weekend… Nestle Purina is recalling all sizes and varieties of its Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes.
Del Monte Pet Products is recalling some of its dog and cat treats with certain date codes.
The FDA suggesting that most of the recalled pet foods contained melamine, a chemical used to make plastics.

A suspect has been charged with murder, less than 24 hours after two Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were fatally shot. The Solomon Islands recovering from an 8.0 magnitude earthquake that triggered a 10 foot wall of water that destroyed one village on the island.
