The Surry County School Board has voted to adopt a ‘smoke-free’ policy for the Surry County School system beginning in July. WS / FC school board will address the smoking issue in May. 72% of public school systems in North Carolina have a 100% tobacco free policy. (WS Journal)

The Senate is scheduled to vote today on legislation that would mandate federal funding of the type of stem-cell research that requires the killing of human embryos. The House of Representatives, which passed a similar bill earlier this year, could vote on the Senate version of the bill as early as next week. President Bush has vowed to veto any embryonic stem cell bill.

The Class of 2007 will be the last at Kerwin Baptist Christian School.
Kerwin Baptist has announced that it will close the school in May.

Two advertisers (Staples and Bigelow Tea Company) have pulled their sponsorship of the Don Imus radio show in protest of his racially charged comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team.
Imus will meet with the Rutgers women’s team in the near future.
Imus’ comments have brought him a two week suspension.

The franchisee that owns virtually all the Jackson Hewitt tax preparation outlets in Raleigh has reached a voluntary agreement with the Justice Department to suspend all new business. The offices will remain open to complete returns for existing customers. Can it get any worse for NASCAR driver / owner Michael Waltrip?
Waltrip has been charged with reckless driving and failure to report an accident after hitting a telephone pole and rolling his car about a mile away from his home over the weekend. Waltrip, who suffered scratches to his face and cuts on his finger, said he fell asleep at the wheel when he wrecked early Saturday morning.

After a closed hearing in the Bahamas, Larry Birkhead saying that DNA tests prove he's the father of Anna Nicole Smith's daughter…Danny Lynn.
Anna Nicole Smith died of an accidental drug overdose February 8. Her daughter Dannielynn is considered the sole heir to a potential multi-million dollar estate.

A Texas family will be able to keep their critically-ill baby on life-support for at least nine more days…after a judge blocked a hospital's move to take the 17-month-old boy off life support.
The child, Emilio Gonzales, who is believed to have Leigh's Disease, a progressive illness that's hard to diagnose, has been at the Children's Hospital of Austin since December. But doctors said treatment is causing the boy to suffer without providing any benefit. The boy's mother insists that the decision on whether or not the boy lives is up to her and God, and no one else. Another hearing on the matter is scheduled for next week.
