Collecting items for soldiers

The residents of Mallard Ridge Assisted Living on Highway 150 in Arcadia have started assembling care packages for members of the military through AnySoldier.com, a free, Web-based service through which members of the military serving in the middle east can request items they need or want.

The funeral Mass for Wake Forest basketball coach Skip Prosser will take place this evening at 6 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church on Kinnamon Road in Clemmons.

Wake Forest basketball coach Skip Prosser passed away on Thursday afternoon from a massive heart attack. He was 56.

There will be a time of prayer and quiet reflection from 2 to 5 (Sunday afternoon) at Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University.

Memorial books will be available for individuals to write their condolences to the family.

Summer school enrollment for math in Forsyth County more than quadrupled this year…, forcing the school district to equally multiply the number of summer school teachers.

The Davidson County Health Department is sponsoring a rabies clinic on Saturday (July 21) from 2 to 4 p.m. at Ledford High School.North Carolina law requires that all dogs and cats over 4 months of age be vaccinated against rabies. A twin-engine Cessna with two people on board crashed into a suburban Orlando subdivision yesterday morning igniting 2 houses. The pilot and Dr. Bruce Kennedy a Daytona Beach plastic surgeon and husband of International Speedway Corporation President Lesa France Kennedy were killed as wel as 3 others on the ground. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

Officials in one Randolph County town said they want indoor furniture off the front porch. Ramseur's mayor said a proposed ordinance would help them clean up the town. A public hearing is set for August 6th at 7:30 p.m., right before the regular town commissioners' meeting in Ramseur.

China's food and drug agency has announced stricter rules for approving new drugs. On Tuesday, the former head of China's food and drug agency was executed for accepting bribes to approve untested medicine.
Starting in September, all food exported from China will have an inspection and quarantine symbol to guarantee safety.
China will host the 2008 Summer Games.

20,000 pieces of costume jewelry imported from China are being recalled because they contain high levels of the lead. The kids costume jewelry being recalled is branded "Essentials for Kids," imported by Future Industries. The products were sold at gift stores, dollar stores and discount stores nationwide from August 2005 through April 2007 for about $1. The products should be taken away immediately from children and returned to the store where purchased for a refund.

Most of North Carolina is dry. The western mountains under extreme drought conditions. In the Triad: The City of Greensboro issuing voluntary water restrictions due to the dry conditions. Water Resources Officials say Greensboro is five inches below normal rainfall this year and the city's supply is only 85% full. Greensboro residents and businesses use nearly 40 million gallons of water each day. (Fox News)

According to the US Geological Survey, flushing a toilet uses three gallons of water. The washing machine uses 10 gallons a load.

Flooding in Texas has claimed 13 lives with forecasters calling for another
1 to 3 inches of rain today. An estimated 1,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed by floods since May. Parts of Oklahoma and Kansas are seeing the water level start to go down.

A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit southern Mexico on Thursday. No reports of any injuries or damage.

A fundraiser for the 25 employees of the Southern Lunch will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of the restaurant on Railroad Street in Lexington. In addition to food, there will be a bake sale, face paintings and raffle for a Bob Timberlake fireside occasional table. A fire on June 26th caused extensive damage to Southern lunch restaurant. Al Gore III…the 24-year-old son of former Vice President Al Gore was arrested for drug possession early Wednesday morning after he was stopped for speeding in his hybrid Toyota Prius. Officers clocked Gore going 100 mph in his hybrid Toyota Prius on a freeway south of Los Angeles. Gore was arrested on reckless driving charges and suspicion of drug possession.
-In 1989, Al Gore III, at age 6, almost died when he was hit by a car, and required extensive surgery and physical therapy. Al Gore III is the youngest child and only son of the former vice president. (CNN / USA)

Saxophonist Boots Randolph, whose spirited saxophone playing on songs like Yakety Sax made him one of Nashville's top musicians passed away on Tuesday. Boots Randolph was 80.He recorded more than 40 albums. As a session musician, he played on Elvis Presley's Return to Sender, Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman and Brenda Lee's Rockin' Round the Christmas Tree. (CNN)

Bill Pinkney, the last survivor of the original members of the musical group The Drifters died Wednesday. He was 81. Pinkney was scheduled to perform during Fourth of July festivities in Daytona Beach, Florida. Pinkney, born in Dalzell, S.C., wasn't part of The Drifters when they recorded their biggest hits including "Under the Boardwalk," "Up on the Roof," and "Save the Last Dance For Me"…but his distinctive bass voice can be heard on the group's version of the holiday classic "White Christmas." Police are investigating the shooting death of 16-year-old
Ernest Washington Dixon. The incident occurred at about 11:20 p.m. Sunday night on Boyd Street in Greensboro. Investigators said his death could be gang related. Dixon was a rising junior at Dudley High School. If you have any information call Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000. (WXII)

The state Legislature is debating a bill called the Street Gang Prevention Act. On Tuesday, the mayors of Winston-Salem and Greensboro were in Raleigh along with other North Carolina mayors to express their support for the bill. The new state law would give authorities power to keep gang members off the streets which would include increased penalties and mandatory jail time for gang-related violence. (journalnow.com / WXII)

The Davie County School Board has chosen Dr. Robert Landry as the new school Superintendent. Dr. Landry is currently the principal at Pinebrook Elementary School in Mocksville. Former superintendent Dr. Stephen Lane resigned in May. (WXII)

Loud blast rocks Disney: Authorities in Florida say a device similar to a pipe bomb exploded in a trash can at Walt Disney World just after midnight early Monday morning. The blast took place in a remote parking lot. An employee had heard a loud noise and saw white smoke coming from a trash can near the Downtown Disney shopping and entertainment district. Officials say no one was injured and there was no serious damage. (CNN / WFMY)

President Bush issued an executive order commuting former White House aide Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby from a two and a-half prison term…saying that the prison sentence issued Libby was too excessive. Libby is still responsible for a $250,000 dollar fine and two years probation. Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff was convicted in March of lying and obstructing the investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity. (USA)

World-renowned soprano opera singer, Beverly Sills, passed away Monday evening…ending her battle with lung cancer. She was 78. (USA)

NBA guard Derek Fisher with the Utah Jazz has been released from his contract on Monday to care for his 10-month-old daughter Tatum…who has cancer. Fisher and his wife said they needed time to search for the best treatment for their daughter, Tatum…who was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in her left eye. The danger is that it could spread to her brain or the rest of her body. He said he doesn't have plans to retire and would enjoy playing the game
but added…basketball is not a priority at this time. (CNN)

British authorities saying that the two men who drove a vehicle packed with explosives into Glasgow's airport on Saturday are the same men who parked two car bombs in central London last Friday. Four people have been arrested in connection with the attack in Glasgow and two car bombs in London. (CNN) Tighter air security: More air marshals have been added to flights to and from the US and Britain. Authorities briefly closed the American Airlines terminal at New York's JFK international airport yesterday after a suspicious package was found. (USA NEWS)

Strong storms in the southern plains states claiming 11 lives. The Kansas National Guard helping residents in one small eastern Kansas town as flooding has forced an evacuation. Could be days until the flood waters recede. (USA NEWS)

Hundreds evacuated and 3 fatalities associated with a deadly Utah wildfire.
46 square miles have been scorched in northeastern Utah with heat and more wind in the forecast today. (USA NEWS)

Fire crews in the North Carolina mountains have contained two fires in the Linville Gorge area…but one blaze continues in Pisgah National Forest. Over 5,000 acres have been burned so far. The US Forest Service says the fires were started June 8 by lightning. (WFMY)

No smoking in England: A ban on smoking in public buildings in England, including pubs, restaurants and even Buckingham Palace, began Sunday.
