Major announcements being made yesterday. John Edwards and Rudi Giuliani have dropped out of the Presidential race. All four of the Republican candidates attended a CNN debate last night. The Democrats (Clinton and Obama) will attend a CNN debate tonight.

The Guilford County Health Department is reporting its first documented case of rabies for 2008. A skunk found on Fairbluff Court in Summerfield on January 25 tested positive for rabies. Health officials’ stress that all pets need to vaccinated. (Fox8)

A Winston-Salem police officer is in critical condition at Baptist Hospital after he slipped and fell on concrete stairs at a home he was renovating. The accident happened on Sunday. Christian kid ministry, Awana is launching a national media campaign called Project Joseph to help kids, parents and churches work together to develop strong "spiritual champions" for Jesus Christ. The I-85 Yadkin River bridge is in need of replacing…could a Toll road be the answer? Officials with the North Carolina Turnpike Authority saying that it will cost about $400 million dollars to replace the current structure with an eight-lane bridge. One way to pay for the project is by making the I-85 Yadkin River bridge a toll way, charging drivers between one and four dollars to go back and forth between Davidson and Rowan counties. County commissioners in Rowan and Davidson counties, plus the North Carolina General Assembly and federal transportation authorities will have to approve the project before any work can begin.

Two North Carolina cities are among the Top 10 worst metropolitan areas for people with asthma. According to a report from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Greensboro came in 7th with Charlotte ranking 10th . Knoxville, Tennessee was ranked first. The foundation reviews factors such as the number of people diagnosed with asthma, the number of asthma medications used per patient and local air quality. Australia is pulling its 550 troops out of Iraq within six months…but will keep a troop presence in Afghanistan.

A Triad Wal-Mart employee was brutally beaten after trying to get the license plate number of an alleged shoplifter. Kenneth Lehman, a customer service manager at the Kernersville Wal-Mart, said he wasn't trying to be a hero, just help police catch a culprit who had run out of the store with a home theater system. The robber fractured Lehman's skull, and left him with a black eye and other bruises during the beating. Police said the man fled the area in a two-door red hatchback. The 150-million dollar economic stimulus package has made it through the House of Representatives. President Bush is urging the Senate to pass the bill without making any major changes to it. The plan will provide rebate checks of up to twelve-hundred dollars per couple. Plus, three-hundred dollars for each eligible dependent child.

Senator Richard Burr has introduced a bill in Congress that would establish a sales tax holiday from April 4 through April 13. The states who suspend collection of their sales taxes during that period would get 60% of their lost revenue reimbursed by the federal government.

Immediate savings from major retailer: Wal-Mart is cutting prices by ten to 30% on thousands of items throughout its stores…including food.

Compassion International has received the ‘MySpace Impact Award for Poverty Relief.’ The award recognizes members of the MySpace community for the positive impact they've had on our culture and how they use MySpace to multiply their reach. The National Weather Service has issued a ‘Wind Advisory’ late tonight through noon Wednesday for Central NC. Included in the Wind Advisory: Davie, Rowan, Surry and Wilkes counties.

After nearly 44 years protecting Greensboro, Fire Chief Johnny Teeters announced Monday that he will retire at the end of the year.

Starting today, a portion of Church Street in Greensboro will be closed for most of the year as crews work to replace a bridge. Church Street between Cornwallis Drive and Wendover Avenue will be closed from 7am to 7pm. The work is expected to continue until December.

25 people were killed earlier today when a bus plunged off an icy road adding to the problems from some of the worst winter weather to hit parts of China in decades. THE WHITE HOUSE AND CONGRESS HAVE AGREED ON A 150-MILLION DOLLAR ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE THAT WILL LIKELY MEAN CASH IN YOUR POCKET. The bi-partisan deal will provide rebate checks of up to six-hundred dollars per individual wage earner and twelve-hundred dollars per couple. It would also provide three-hundred dollars for each eligible dependent child.

Middle-school students in the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County school system will have to take three years of foreign language starting next year. Flu bug on the rise: The NC Division of Public Health reporting that the number of flu cases statewide nearly tripled last week. Over 40 students at Appalachian State University have been treated for flu since Sunday. More than 200 students at Wake Forest University have been treated for the flu in the past week. Over 100 families that currently have kids enrolled at Center Grove Christian Academy in Clemmons may need to find a new school. Center Grove could be closing its doors. An outside team hired to analyze the school’s financial situation recommended the closure. The school has been running in a deficit for years. The school, which is run by Center Grove Christian Church, currently has 130 children from kindergarten through the fifth grade. The 1500-member congregation at Center Grove Christian Church will vote on closing the school and day care this Sunday. (WXII / MSNBC)

DEMOCRAT VOTERS IN SC WILL BE HEADING TO THE POLLS ON SATURDAY FOR THE STATE’S PRIMARY. John McCain won the GOP Primary in SC last Saturday. Florida is holding its primaries on Tuesday.

Good news from the front lines: The U.S.-led Coalition saying that a three-year-old Iraqi girl, discovered by Marines operating in the Al Anbar Province, was diagnosed as having a congenital heart defect. The surgeon then made arrangements with the Children’s Hospital at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University. The Marines airlifted the little girl to the Jordanian border earlier this week. A medical team escorted the girl and her mom to Nashville. Vanderbilt’s Children’s Hospital has agreed to perform the open heart surgery at no cost to the family.

I-85 southbound near the split with Interstate 40 in Greensboro was closed last night after a high speed chase between an off duty officer and a reported robber ended near Creekridge Road. The robbery happened at Four Seasons Town Center. According to police, an altercation occurred and the suspect was shot by the officer. The off duty officer was taken to Moses Cone Hospital. General Motors just barely retaining its lead over Toyota as the world's No. 1 automaker in 2007. Toyota (with its popular Camry, Corolla and Prius hybrid) is now the No. 2 seller in the US…surpassing Ford.

Some parts of Southern California are recovering from record rainfall while the mountains north of Los Angeles are dealing with heavy snow.

THOUSANDS OF PALESTINIANS ARE CONTINUING TO CROSS INTO EGYPT after explosives were used to blow holes in the wall between Gaza and Egypt. Israel sealed the border late last week in response to rocket attacks into southern Israel. The Palestinians are buying food and other supplies in Egypt.

INITIAL RESULTS FROM AN AUTOPSY ON ACTOR HEATH LEDGER ARE INCONCLUSIVE. The New York Post reports the results of additional tests will take up to 2 weeks. Ledger was found unresponsive yesterday in his Manhattan apartment on Tuesday. Foul play isn’t suspected. Ledger had just finished filming the role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight,"
the latest installment in the Batman series. The film is to open in July.

The Christian and Missionary Alliance is expanding Christian radio in the West African nation of Burkina Fasco. Gospel Radio Burkina is in the process of setting up three more stations…adding to the four stations already on the air. The C-and-M A saying that the additional radio stations will reach people in parts of Burkina that missionaries have not yet been able to penetrate.
Crooks in Malaysia stole an adult cow, squeezed it into the back seat of a mid-sized car and drove off with it, but abandoned the animal when the getaway vehicle crashed into a tree. It was not clear how the thieves managed to push the cow into the car or whether the animal had been sedated. The crooks got away…but the cow did not.

Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson has dropped out of the Presidential race yesterday citing poor showings in early primary and caucus states.

An autopsy is scheduled for today for actor Heath Ledger. Ledger was found unresponsive yesterday in his Manhattan apartment.The 28-year-old Australian-born actor leaves behind a two-year-old daughter. Ledger had just finished filming the role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight," the latest installment in the Batman series. The film is to open in July. Chain restaurants in New York must begin posting calorie information on their menus beginning March 31st. The regulation approved by New York City’s Board of Health yesterday applies to restaurant chains that operate 15 or more outlets nationwide.

Whole Foods is phasing out traditional disposable plastic grocery bags. The decision covers all of the company's 270 stores in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom. Whole Foods says it wants to stop using the plastic bags by Earth Day, April 22.

NEARLY THREE HUNRED PEOPLE IN SOUTHERN SUDAN RECENTLY HAD THEIR SIGHT RESTORED THANKS TO THE MEDICAL WORK OF TWO CHRISTIAN MISSIONARY ORGANIZATIONS. Mission Aviation Fellowship flew a team from Christian Blind Mission into the southern portion of Sudan. Christian Today-dot-com reports that, in all, the team examined about six hundred patients during their stay in the region. Half of those patients were suffering from what is known as river blindness. The medical team operated on some of the patients and administered medicine to others.

New study: found that radiation from a cell phone can cause insomnia, headaches and confusion and may reduce the amount of deep sleep, thus interfering with the body's ability to refresh itself. A new study suggesting that caffeine consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage. The study showed that women who consume 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day (that’s two or more cups of regular coffee or five cans of caffeinated soda) had twice the miscarriage risk as women who consumed no caffeine. The study sponsored by Kaiser Permanente.

Terry Grier is heading west. The superintendent for the Guilford County school system has been selected as the new superintendent for the San Diego Unified School District. Grier will begin in California on July 1st.

Transylvania County detectives have linked Gary Hilton to the murder of 84-year-old Irene Bryant and disappearance of her 80-year-old husband John Bryant. The couple disappeared in November after going for a hike in the NC Mountains. Last week, Gary Hilton was charged with the death of 24-year-old Meredith Emerson…who was last seen hiking in a Georgia state forest.

Information from the Alan Guttmacher Institute shows that the abortion rate fell to 19 abortions per one thousand women aged 15 to 44 in 2005. That is the lowest number of abortions since 1974. In terms of numbers, that translates to over one million abortions were performed in 2005. The National Right to Life Committee welcomed the news…saying that it’s a testimony to the impact of pro-life education, outreach, and the passage of state laws that require waiting periods before women receive an abortion.

Chess Champ Bobby Fischer who gained fame in 1972 after beating an opponent from the Soviet Union has died. Fischer was 64.

A wintry nor'easter will keep students in Boston at home on Monday. The Northeast could get between 6 to 10 inches of snow.

Police in Shreveport, Louisiana are casting doubt on reported sightings of a man charged with murder in the death of a pregnant Marine. Authorities in North Carolina have charged Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean with murder in the death of Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when last reported seen. An adult and an un-born baby were unearthed in shallow grave near Laurean's home on Saturday. (Fox News)

Presidential candidates making one last push through Michigan today…before Primaries on Tuesday. Attention then turns to Nevada, where the primary is being held this Saturday. The Republican Primary in South Carolina will be held on Saturday. The Democratic Primary will be held in South Carolina on January 26th.

Sheriff's deputies in Forsyth County will soon undergo random drug testing with testing for firefighters and paramedics to follow. A MAJOR GROUND BEEF RECALL: Rochester Meat Company is voluntarily recalling nearly 188-thousand pounds of ground beef products because of E. coli contamination. The Red Cross in Kenya reporting that the death toll from post-election violence in Kenya has risen to at least 575.

Continuing story: Close to 8,000 homes and businesses without power this morning in western Forsyth and northwestern Guilford Counties. Traffic lights out in the effected area. Could be at least 10am until crews get the power back on. 1-800-Power-on to report an outage.

Citrus growers in the South are keeping a close eye on their crops this morning. The National Weather Service has issued a hard freeze warning from northern Florida westward through eastern Texas this morning.

State officials have lifted the ban on open burning…saying that recent rains have provided enough precipitation to make open burning safe.
A statewide burn ban was imposed in mid-October because of the worsening drought. Another burn ban could be reinstated if conditions change.

Out with the old …up with the new: Demolition started on a homeless shelter at the Bethesda Center in Winston-Salem. The old facility was no longer functional and employees said it simply was too small. The new shelter will also provide room for counselors to work with those who have nowhere to go during the day.

At least 50 people were taken to the hospital after a Greyhound bus turned over near the town of Henderson on Route 1 where it collided with a tractor-trailer truck yesterday morning. The bus was traveling from Richmond, Va., to Raleigh. Henderson is about 45 miles north of Raleigh near the Virginia border.

The worst start to a new year in 25 years on Wall Street yesterday.
Oil hitting one-hundred dollars a barrel and gold reached a record high of 861 dollars an ounce.

Voters in Iowa will be selecting their favorite Presidential candidate later today. The Iowa caucuses are the first event of the national presidential primary season. The National Weather Service is forecasting a cold and windy day for much of Iowa.

Tens of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes in Kenya because of post-election violence that has claimed 300 lives since Sunday. The State Department and the European Union have both voiced concerns about possible irregularities in the elections in Kenya.

The San Francisco Zoo is set to reopen today…Nine days after a deadly tiger attack that occurred on Christmas day. The tiger exhibit will remain closed. The zoo has also posted new signs asking patrons not to throw things into the exhibits or to tease or call out to the animals.

With the races too close to call, presidential candidates are spending their last full campaign day before the Iowa caucuses urging voters for their support…offering everything from babysitting services to snow shovels to help supporters get to the caucuses on Thursday. Most of the candidates are crisscrossing Iowa, appearing at rallies, house parties, restaurants -- wherever voters can be found. GOP candidate Mike Huckabee is scheduled to appear on the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" tonight. Democrat John Edwards will appear at a free concert by John Mellencamp.

Elections will be postponed until next month in Pakistan.

Over 200 people have lost their lives in election-related violence across Kenya. Police in Kernersville need your help. They are looking for the driver who struck and killed a police tracking dog Monday morning, then drove away from the scene. The incident happened on Dobson Street. The four-year-old dog named Jake was owned by Tri-City Trackers, a group that trains and aids the Kernersville police department and other agencies with criminal and rescue tracking. Police are looking for a white Ford F150 pickup with a camper shell.

Someone used the water tower for the town of Maiden (just south of Hickory) for target practice sometime early Monday morning. The Catawba County Sheriff's Department said the tower appears to have been shot three times with a high-powered rifle. Officials are now waiting for most of the 750,000 gallons of water to drain out of the water tower because repairs must be done from inside the holding tank. Repairs to the tank- $15,000 to $20,000.
