Some history: National Doughnut Day was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to raise funds during the Great Depression and to honor World War I Salvation Army volunteers who prepared doughnuts for thousands of soldiers.

Fibrowatt's announcement yesterday that it will build a $140 million power plant near Elkin marks the single largest investment by any company in the history of Surry County. Fibrowatt generates electricity by burning chicken ‘waste’ and is expected to bring 80 or more jobs.

Update: A Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Sarasota, Florida has ended its agreement with Planned Parenthood’s attempt to build a new abortion facility in Sarasota, Florida. Here’s the deal…Planned Parenthood wanted to open an abortion clinic in Sarasota, but due to zoning ordinances they were unable to do so. Two men scaled a Manhattan skyscraper on Thursday. The 52-story office tower, that is home to the New York Times, has ‘slats’ on the exterior making it possible for the two dare devils to make it to the top within a matter of hours. Both men were arrested after reaching the top.
