The California Supreme Court will not stay its decision authorizing homosexuals to "marry" in that state, even though voters will consider a constitutional amendment to ban the practice in November. The justices had ruled last month that California must allow homosexuals to marry under the same terms and conditions as heterosexuals despite a state law defining marriage as the union of only one man and one woman.

Continental Airlines will cut 3,000 jobs and retire some 67 mainline aircraft in an attempt to cut costs amid record oil and fuel prices. United Airlines announced yesterday that an additional 1,000 jobs will be cut by the end of the year.

In Winston-Salem, a squirrel that had crawled into a substation near Wake Forest University knocked out power to the area for several hours yesterday morning.
The latest electrical outage in the city of Statesville was caused by a black snake that crawled into an electrical substation. Some 3,100 customers were without power for about 90 minutes Tuesday night.
