Winston-Salem has a new Police Chief. Scott Cunningham, the former police chief of Cary, will replace Pat Norris who is retiring.

Under a Bill approved unanimously by the State Senate, people who give large monetary gifts to family and friends would not be subject to additional taxes.

A public information meeting at the Civic Center in Lexington turned into a very vocal forum last night. The topic: Forced annexation. The city of Lexington is considering annexing four areas affecting some 2,000 people.

A man has been arrested and charged with threatening to shoot the members of the Greensboro City Council. 57-year-old William Marshburn, of Summerfield, was upset about his home being annexed into the city of Greensboro. (News & Record of Greensboro)

Senator Barack Obama declaring victory last night, claiming the Democratic presidential nomination (at least by the numbers).With no more primaries, the delegate and super delegate count is now on Obama’s side.
-Senator Hillary Clinton did not concede to rival Obama but said that she is open to the Vice President job…if it is available.
-Republican John McCain held a prime-time speech of his own last night.

Fresh tomatoes the culprit? An outbreak of salmonella food poisoning involving raw tomatoes has now been reported in nine states. The specific type and source of tomatoes is under investigation. There have been 40 confirmed cases of salmonella in Texas and New Mexico with at least 17 people hospitalized. (CDC)

U.N. Secretary General BAN KI-MOON HAS CALLED FOR A DRASTIC INCREASE IN FOOD PRODUCTION. During a UN-sponsored summit in Rome, Moon said that food production would have to rise by 50% by 2030 to meet demand.
