The House of Representatives rejecting a $700 billion dollar Wall Street ‘bail-out’ proposal. What’s next? The House will reconvene on Thursday after the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashana. With the news that Congress rejected a massive Wall Street bailout package, the Dow Jones Industrial Average suffered its largest point loss ever on Monday.

If you bank with Wachovia…it should be business as usual today. Yesterday, in a deal brokered by the FDIC, Citigroup acquired Wachovia’s banking operations for $1 dollar a share. Just a year ago, Wachovia stock was trading at $50 dollars a share. Thousands of high-paying jobs could be eliminated in Charlotte.

GASOLINE SHORTAGES CONTINUE IN THE SOUTHEAST. USA Today reports long lines continue to form at stations that have gas in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and in the Carolinas. The shortages are the result of back-to-back hurricanes knocking out power to oil refineries in Texas.

City leaders in Winston-Salem would like to use a locally grown tree as the official Christmas tree that adorns Corpening Plaza in downtown Winston-Salem during December. The city would prefer a fir or spruce that is at least 50 feet tall. Interested? Call 727-8000.

Breaking News: In a deal brokered by the FDIC, Citigroup will acquire Wachovia’s banking operations. Under the agreement, Citigroup will acquire Wachovia's massive deposit network, as well as over $300 billion worth of Wachovia's loan portfolio and the company's debt. Charlotte bassed Wachovia is the nation’s 4th largest bank.

The President urging Congress to approve his administration's $700 billion dollar Wall Street bailout proposal. Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College has cancelled classes through Sunday because of the gas shortage that has hit the Eastern portion of the US.

OIL PRICES ARE UP BUT GASOLINE PRICES ARE DOWN. Oil closed about $16-dollars higher yesterday to end the day at about 121-dollars a barrel. The Triple A says the national average price for regular unleaded is $3.72 a gallon.

The 700-billion dollar bank bailout proposal by the Bush Administration comes under scrutiny of the senate Banking Committee today. The rescue measure calls for the federal government to buy up the bad mortgage loans held by many of the nation's financial institutions.

More than two thirds of North Carolina adults support drilling for oil off the state’s coast. According to an Elon University poll released yesterday, 69% of people polled strongly support oil exploration as close as 3 miles off the Carolina coast. Officials in Lancaster, California will be sending crews out to pave over a quarter-mile strip of asphalt grooved to play the William Tell Overture when auto tires speed over it. The Attorneys General office handing down 10 additional subpoenas yesterday to nine more gas stations…including ones in Yadkinville and Statesville…as part of an ongoing investigation into possible price gouging. A fourth baby has died from contaminated infant formula from China. More than 6,200 babies, mostly newborns, remain hospitalized with dozens suffering from kidney failure because of tainted baby formula. None of the tainted milk powder was exported to the US or Europe.

A new FREE health clinic will be available on Wednesdays in Forsyth County. Medical students from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine will be volunteering at the FREE medical clinic in the Community Care Center on New Walkertown Road. The Federal Reserve will bail out insurance giant AIG. Under the deal, the Federal Reserve will provide a two-year, $85 billion dollar emergency loan to AIG. It will cost taxpayers at least $300,000 to change the road signs that direct drivers onto the Urban Loop and Interstate 40 through Greensboro. Last week, the DOT announced it will soon eliminate Business 40 through Greensboro and redirect I-40 traffic back to its original route. 10 offshore petroleum platforms were destroyed in the Gulf. As a ripple effect, gas prices have gone up some 17 cents nationwide since Friday because of Ike. Some gas stations were selling gas at over $5 dollars a gallon.

Houston is under a week long curfew because of Ike. Millions still without power in southern Texas (mainly in and around Houston). The effects of Ike were felt as far north as Ohio. On Sunday, over a million customers from Louisville to Columbus were without power. (CNN)

Tropical storm Hanna could become a category one Hurricane before making landfall around 2am Saturday morning near the North Carolina – South Carolina border.
Tropical storm watches or warnings have been issued from Georgia to areas just south of New York City. Governor Mike Easley declaring a state of emergency for our state. The Triad is under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert

Tropical storm Hanna will likely become a category one Hurricane before making landfall on Friday. Hanna at this point will impact the Eastern portions of North Carolina (mainly east of I-95).

The National Weather Service has issued a dangerous Rip Current Warning for the coastal areas of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia until further notice with the approach of Hanna.

Update: The Children’s Village set up by the Audio Adrenaline’s Hands and Feet Project in Haiti has been devastated by Hurricane Gustav. All of the children and staff are safe but are now living in the one remaining home that was not damaged. The project's main storage building was destroyed by the storm.Hands and Feet Project saying that everything in the building has been lost including food, clothing, diapers, and tools.The Hands and Feet project says the village received more than 25 inches of rain in 24 hours.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami is tracking 3 tropical storms in the Atlantic: Tropical Storm Hanna along with Ike and Josephine.
Hanna is expected to reorganize and strengthen over the next two days. The National Weather Service has issued a Rip Current Warning for the coastal areas of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The American Red Cross has set up its statewide nerve center in a 45,000-sqare-foot warehouse in Greensboro. At least one Greensboro animal shelter is planning for pets evacuated during the storm. Greensboro Pet Spa & Resort on Martin Luther King Drive can house about 80 dogs and 15 cats, and is asking for only a donation, if possible.

VP pick Sarah Palin will speak tonight at the Republican National Convention. Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman (now an Independent) gave a positive endorsement of John McCain and running mate VP Sarah Palin last night .

Greensboro-based food distributor, Southern Foods, has been sold to a group of specialty food investors. The company said it will keep all of its employees and continue to operate from its Old Battleground Road facility. Southern Foods was founded in 1954 by the Nussbaum family.

Portions of Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana (or the Ark-La-Tex area) are receiving lots of rain from Gustav which is now a Tropical Depression. The Governor of Louisiana will meet with local officials later today to access the damage. At least 8 deaths in the US are blamed on Gustav.

Scheduled events and speakers at the Republican National Convention will likely resume today in Minnesota. President Bush will address the convention via satellite from Texas. All eyes on the Gulf Coast this morning:
Hurricane Gustav is a Category 3 storm with winds holding steady at 115 mph. Gustav expected to make landfall just west of New Orleans around noon. Storm surges of 8 to 10 feet are expected. Officials will be watching the levees. President Bush will be keeping up with Gustav from Texas. Gustav comes just days after the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The Weather Channel saying that Tropical Storm Hanna is becoming better defined. Hanna, about 500 miles away from Florida, is pushing through the Bahamas today. Hanna will likely bring clouds and rain to North and South Carolina as early as Friday.

Starting next week, school officials in Surry County have decided to run limited bus routes in an effort to save money on fuel costs. Last year, Surry county spent more than $600,000 dollars on fuel. District Court Judge Ted Royster remains in critical condition after a motorcycle accident Saturday afternoon. Royster was taking part in a fundraising ride with friends over the weekend. Americans are working longer and putting off retirement. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average retirement age still remains 63.
