The House of Representatives rejecting a $700 billion dollar Wall Street ‘bail-out’ proposal. What’s next? The House will reconvene on Thursday after the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashana. With the news that Congress rejected a massive Wall Street bailout package, the Dow Jones Industrial Average suffered its largest point loss ever on Monday.

If you bank with Wachovia…it should be business as usual today. Yesterday, in a deal brokered by the FDIC, Citigroup acquired Wachovia’s banking operations for $1 dollar a share. Just a year ago, Wachovia stock was trading at $50 dollars a share. Thousands of high-paying jobs could be eliminated in Charlotte.

GASOLINE SHORTAGES CONTINUE IN THE SOUTHEAST. USA Today reports long lines continue to form at stations that have gas in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and in the Carolinas. The shortages are the result of back-to-back hurricanes knocking out power to oil refineries in Texas.

City leaders in Winston-Salem would like to use a locally grown tree as the official Christmas tree that adorns Corpening Plaza in downtown Winston-Salem during December. The city would prefer a fir or spruce that is at least 50 feet tall. Interested? Call 727-8000.

Poor planning? Two armed robbers hijacked a security van carrying $1.3 million dollars inside but were forced to abandon more than half the cash because their getaway car was too small. The thieves still got away with half a million dollars. Malaysian police say that the heist possibly is an inside job.
