All eyes on the Gulf Coast this morning:
Hurricane Gustav is a Category 3 storm with winds holding steady at 115 mph. Gustav expected to make landfall just west of New Orleans around noon. Storm surges of 8 to 10 feet are expected. Officials will be watching the levees. President Bush will be keeping up with Gustav from Texas. Gustav comes just days after the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Senator John McCain cancelling most of the opening day festivities in light of Hurricane Gustav.

The Weather Channel saying that Tropical Storm Hanna is becoming better defined. Hanna, about 500 miles away from Florida, is pushing through the Bahamas today. Hanna will likely bring clouds and rain to North and South Carolina as early as Friday.

Starting next week, school officials in Surry County have decided to run limited bus routes in an effort to save money on fuel costs. Last year, Surry county spent more than $600,000 dollars on fuel. District Court Judge Ted Royster remains in critical condition after a motorcycle accident Saturday afternoon. Royster was taking part in a fundraising ride with friends over the weekend. Royster was originally taken to Thomasville Medical Center then transferred to Baptist Medical Center. Americans are working longer and putting off retirement. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average retirement age still remains 63. Twenty-nine percent of people in their late 60s were working in 2006, up from 18% in 1985,. Nearly 6 million workers last year were 65 or over. Over the next decade, the number of 55-and-up workers is expected to rise at more than five times the rate of the overall work force.

From the ‘ooops’ file: Officials at UNC are apologizing to Duke fans for Saturday’s miss-hap! Two men parachuted into Wallace Wade stadium just before the Duke – James Madison game. The parachutists were bringing the game ball to Kenan Stadium for the Carolina game…some 8 miles away. That’s right…they landed on the wrong football field! The pilot had cancelled the jump…then the weather cleared, he saw a football stadium and the rest is history! Both UNC and Duke won their home openers on Saturday!
