Portions of Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana (or the Ark-La-Tex area) are receiving lots of rain from Gustav which is now a Tropical Depression. The Governor of Louisiana will meet with local officials later today to access the damage. At least 8 deaths in the US are blamed on Gustav.

The season’s next storm Hurricane Hanna could bring clouds and rain to central North Carolina (including the Triad) on Friday and Saturday. Tropical Storm Ike is developing in the Atlantic. www.weather.com/?from=globalnav

Scheduled events and speakers at the Republican National Convention will likely resume today in Minnesota. President Bush will address the convention via satellite from Texas. Last night, the convention switched gears from politics to Hurricane relief. The governors of the Gulf Coast States of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas spoke. The Republican National Convention is being held in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, and runs through Thursday.

The 17-year-old unmarried daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant. Palin making the announcement on Monday. Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Josh Harris, a 36-year-old Navy SEAL from Lexington, was killed while crossing a river in Afghanistan over the weekend.Harris' safety harness came undone and he was swept away by swift currents while leading his men across a river. Josh was the son of Dr. Sam Harris and Evelyn Harris of Lexington. Evelyn Harris is one of the founders of the Lexington Youth Theater. Voiceover talent Don LaFontaine has died. THE voice of movie trailers for close to 30 years, he was 68. LaFontaine passed away due to complications a collapsed lung. He recently parodied himself on a series of national television commercials for Geico. College Football: NC State starting QB Russell Wilson will not start against William and Mary on Saturday night. Wilson suffered a concussion in last Thursday’s game.
