The DVD players could burst into flames. The DVD player, imported from China, was sold at Wal-Mart stores from January 2006 through July 2009 for $29.

Hurricane Bill is still a Category Three storm with sustained winds of 120mph…but is looking less organized this morning. The center of the storm is still around 800 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras. The National Hurricane Center expects Bill to create large swells and dangerous rip tides along the East Coast from North Carolina to central Florida.

Two firefighters were hit by lightning last night in Surry County. Both members of the Franklin Volunteer Fire Dept. were hit while fighting three fires started by lightning strikes. Neither firefighter had serious injuries.

The Department of Transportation says the popular rebate program will end at eight PM on Monday, August 24th. As of Thursday, the D.O.T. says cash-for-clunkers has recorded more than 457 thousand dealer transactions worth one-point-nine billion dollars in rebates.

Dr. Patricia A. Sullivan, the former chancellor at UNCG, passed away on Thursday after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 69. Sullivan became UNCG's first woman chancellor in 1995. Per Sullivan's wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Patricia A. Sullivan and Charles W. Sullivan Scholarship Fund, which the couple established at UNCG.
Funeral arrangements: The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Sunday, August 23, at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel. A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, August 24 at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church on Horse Pen Creek Rd.
