Practicing in the summer heat is always a challenge for football players and band members. The News & Observer of Raleigh posting a story about University of North Carolina football players going high-tech to determine just how heated their bodies become during practice. On Tuesday, 18 Tar Heel players swallowed pills that contain a battery, thermometer and radio transmitter.
Officials hope the vitamin-size CorTemp capsule will provide data to help determine if higher body temperatures increase the possibility of concussions. Coaches also plan to use the information to better regulate drills during practice and to monitor players in heat that often reaches the high 90s in the early-season games.

A Page High School football player was taken to Moses Cone Hospital yesterday morning after possibly experiencing heat-related problems. School officials mentioned that the football player did not eat or drink prior to practice. It's already recommended for aches, pains and preventing heart attacks. Now, there's evidence that aspirin may help in the battle against colon cancer. A study finds colon cancer patients who took aspirin reduced their risk of death from the disease by nearly 30%. Also, patients who already have colon cancer may benefit from taking aspirin along with surgery and chemotherapy. But researchers say it's too early for an across-the-board recommendation.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the US after lung cancer.
The study is in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The Transportation Department is investigating the extended stay of 47 airline passengers on an airport tarmac in Minnesota over the weekend to see if any laws were violated during the incident. Last Friday, Continental Express Flight 2816 left Houston at 9:23 p.m. It didn't arrive at its destination in Minneapolis until after 11 a.m. Saturday morning. Hurricane Felicia weakened to a Tropical Depression before reaching the Hawaiian Islands yesterday evening. The tropical paradise could see up to two inches of rain today and tomorrow. Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center is keeping its eye on a tropical depression brewing in the Atlantic.

In Taiwan, close to 1,000 people…feared dead…have been found alive after they fled their villages because of massive mudslides after Typhoon Morakot hit the island over the weekend.

French police say a woman "not in her senses" threw a mug at Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece the "Mona Lisa" earlier this month. The 500-year-old painting, which hangs in the Louvre gallery in Paris, was not damaged. The "Mona Lisa," considered one of the world's most valuable paintings, sits behind bulletproof glass in a special wing of the Louvre. -In 1956 the artwork was damaged when acid was thrown at it. A rock was also thrown in a separate incident in the same year. -In 1911 it was stolen from the Louvre but was returned two years later.

Fred Couples will play in next week's Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club…which is set for August 17-23 in Greensboro.

Tiger Woods is interested in adding a gold medal to his collection of green jackets. Woods has indicated that he would play in the Olympics if golf became part of the program in 20-16. The International Olympic Committee executive board is meeting later this week in Berlin to recommend two sports for inclusion in the 2016 games. Golf and Rugby Sevens are considered the favorites. (Rugby sevens is a variant of rugby with seven players, instead of the usual 15, with shorter matches)
