Michael Hayes, the man who killed four people and wounded five others in a 1988 shooting spree on Old Salisbury Road, has been awarded a new hearing to determine if he should be released from a state mental hospital. A jury found Hayes not guilty by reason of insanity. Each year since 1992, he has been eligible for a recommitment hearing.

Don Wildmon, founder and chairman of the American Family Association, was hospitalized over the weekend with spinal meningitis. Wildmon (71 years old) was listed in critical condition.

About 60,000 senior citizens have quit AARP since July 1 due to the group's support for a national health care overhaul. A Disney stunt performer died after suffering an injury during a rehearsal Monday night. The performer was injured while performing a tumbling roll for the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Robert Novak, one of Washington’s most influential political journalists and a fixture on CNN’s Crossfire and the Capitol Gang, died Tuesday after a battle with brain cancer. Novak was 78.

Intense exercise can be addictive, according to a study of rats that found excessive running shares similarities with drug-taking behaviors. "As with food intake and other parts of life, moderation seems to be the key," lead author Robin Kanarek, of Tufts University. THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION HAS REPORTEDLY FILED DOCUMENTS TO REPEAL THE DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT. The Washington Times reports the Obama Justice Department's filings claim that federal laws banning same-sex marriages are discriminatory. Pro-family groups have responded with sharp criticism to the filing of the documents.
The Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, was passed by Congress and signed into law in 1996.

Officials are warning beachgoers along the North Carolina Coast about burying people in the sand after a 16-year-old nearly drowned when the tide came in over his head.
